Introduction:
And thus marks my glorious and little, to almost un-known return to the AMV world.. not that anyone noticed I left.
In any case, boys and girls, this one's technically not an AMV, although its about as close as you can get.
Initial Impressions:
I've had several ideas for a video to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and to be honest, originality is difficult when it comes to something as popular as this here piece of work, because the themes are as anime as it gets, traditionally speaking, of course.
What was holding me back was the typical self-loathing found in just about any rock song with lyrics. While these would be able to tell a story, it wouldn't be anything special, and to tell you the truth, the cantidates didn't have the ability to translate an action oriented piece such as this one.
None of these ideas truly cemented themselves into any sort of progress beyond 'Hmm.. that sounds cool' until I came across a song that had done what I wanted. VNV Nation's Epicentre
Song Choice
VNV Nation is one of my all time favorite artist(s) (made up of two people, respectively) and the unique thing about this song is that it trancends the typical "why me" or "I could have done so much more" found in your cut-of-the-rug rock song. This song is, instead, about self-realization, and being able to communicate that. Both to yourself, and those around you. Needless to say, I was sold on lyrical premise alone. Putting full faith in VNV Nation's synth/future-pop sounds to translate the excess action this OAV packs.
Premise
The main idea behind this one is: Cloud's feelings as the song progresses, more-so than the actual story(but pretty much the same). I had to do some jumping around because linear editing limits the story I wanted to portray, but I have a strong feeling it won't over-ride the correlation you can find to the actual story found in the film. This is, of course, because of the Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, etc. setup of the song.
Particulars
The song also gave me the flexibility to shift similar feelings in Kadaj as he progresses through the OAV, and I take advantage of it, but only for a short time, and the sake of the similar story element they share (both can not deny what they are- although Cloud is stuck in a loathesome state, and Kadaj is simply filling out his dream as a remnant of Sephiroth)
I'm trying some scene matching where similar things happen to give it a morph type of feel, and I'm fiddling around with some fast forward effects and subtle scene blending to match certain parts of the song.
I'm also going back to my early editing days, and attempting to cut two seperate scenes as one continuous run.
What I mean is say one scene is A and the other is B
so you would see it as A-B-A-B-A-B
This eliminates the feeling that I'm just jumping around to random scenes just because they fit the beat-sync. However, if this type of thing seems out-dated and annoys you, I assure you, its at random intervals and is there for the sake of noticing how it blends, and then its gone in favor of sporadic, and/or traditional syncing and scene selection.
Overall Thoughts
If you like either the song, or the OAV, I can't promise, but I can strongly suggest that this video should not disappoint. I'd like to believe one of my assets in editing is pacing, and given this opportunity with such a smooth Computer-Animated OAV, and the different synth, trance, and Industrial elements found in the song, I pulled off something that isn't so hard to swallow, and hopefully leaves a decent taste in its wake.
