• Comments: This was inspired by the "Yaoi Guy For the Shonen Guy" segment in Scott Melzer's "S.T.E.A.M. The Movie" which I saw at Otakon, but didn't truly appreciate until I saw it at New York Comic-Con. The reason simply being that the fan parody room at Otakon was too big and echoey for me to make out all the dialogue. Anyway, the segment involved the character from Bastard (I'm pretty sure that was it) being magically changed into a dead sexy bishonen (I won't say who 'cause it would spoil the surprise). For the finale of the segment they used the song "Now You're a Man" by DVDA (song originally from Matt Stone & Trey Parker's film Orgazmo).
  
  I got to talking to some friends about some funny AMVs that could be made using that music, but the most obvious was Major Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist. And thus the process began.
  
  The song is quite short, only a little over two minutes, but I still cut out about thirty seconds or so because there was only so much footage I was willing to use, and I didn't want it to be padded out.
  
  I made this using my Mac on Final Cut Pro. First I ripped the DVDs using OSEX and then converted them to DV using MPEG Streamclip. Initially I was working at 29.97 fps with the fields blended by JES Deinterlacer because it seemed like I wasn't going to be able to perform an inverse telecine to bring the footage to 23.98 fps.
  
  Very late in the game I figured out that on a shot by shot basis an inverse telecine with JES Deinterlacer was possible, but it proved an arduous process involving a lot of trial and error. There was no fool proof way to do it, I just went through encoding each shot individually. In the end I managed to get 99% of the footage at 23.98 fps thus eliminating any extra in between frames. The final encode was done by exporting a DV stream and using D-Volution to crop and convert it to an XviD DivX file. I used Photoshop for the three still images that spell out "MAN" during a segment in the video.
  
  I finished the first edit in a few days after that it was mostly tweaking. All the technical stuff took far longer than any of the creative.
  
  I'm very satisfied with the end result, and I think I made a tribute worthy of Major Armstrong.
