AnimeBoston 2006: Best Romance.
I was looking for a good song to fit Chrno Crusade and happened to remember an AMV I'd seen to this song done about Wolfwood from Trigun a long, long time ago. The song fits the anime so well, and there was such potential for dramatic romance, that I just had to do it. I do apologize for the spoiler of the end, but I'm sure if you've watched the video you'll agree that it fits too well to not be there. I had made this video previously using entirely fansub footage (months and months ago) but deleted the whole thing when I realized that in order to truly do it justice I needed the DVD quality footage. I saved up and bought almost the whole series, except one DVD which I simply couldn't afford, so 95% of this video is DVD quality and has also been run through post-production filtration via AVS.
This series is so touching and hearfelt. Every time (and I mean EVERY time) I watch the last episode I cry. It's such a beautiful story of love, sacrifice and loss - which is why I made the video in the way I did. Here are the lyrics:
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty
in the moonlight
overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne,
she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Maybe I've been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
There was a time you'd let me know
What's real and going on below
But now you never show it to me do you?
Remember when I moved in you?
The holy dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was
hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Maybe there's a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It's not a cry you can hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
The only lyrics I really had trouble with were "she tied to you a kitchen chair, she broke your throne, she cut your hair" because Rosette does none of these things. So I had to settle for the closest things I could.
The "Hallelujah" in the song is symbolized by time and life - ultimately, the watch contract - in the AMV. Hence, "the baffled king composing hallalujah" would be the "man" who ordered the contract's creation - Aion. This is his only part in this AMV, because the struggle between Earth and Aion's forces, while directly impacting both Rosette and Chrno and their relationship, doesn't play much of a part in the love story between them. The lyrics "a cold and broken hallelujah" symbolize how broken their lives are when they are forced apart - both Rosette and Chrno, and earlier, Chrno and Magdalene.
Chrno is the character I chose to truly focus on in this piece. Given that the singer was male, I thought it more appropiate. Hence, showing his past heartbreak and how it affects his reactions to Rosette became an integral part of the video.
Overall I'm very happy with how this video came out. I haven't seen very many outstanding Chrno Crusade AMVs and I was determined to do the show justice.
(A couple of side notes:
the title of the AMV is in French because Chrno seems to have originally come from France. Listen closely to the Japanese version and you'll hear him say "Oui" instead of "Hai" from time to time.
The poem - which appears only on the distribution copy of this video here on the .org - I included because I simply felt that the video needed that certain extra something. This series focuses so much on music I thought it fitting to include poetry. The name of the poem is "As I walked Out One Evening" by W.H. Auden. The stanzas included with the AMV are only an excerpt.)
