For me, Macross was always about the planes. Yeah sure there were the giant robots and stuff, but I got sick and tired of mecha a long time ago.. After I had watched Macross Plus a few times (in both movie and OVA form) I got the idea to make this. "Fuel" by Metallica was perfect, but the original version seemed too hokey for something really epic like Macross Plus. Instead I used the version from the awesome album S&M, where they had orchestral backup from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra (Go Niners!) This version fit the bill so much better because it's a much more serious take on the song, and I was going for a more serious angle on Macross Plus as well (as serious as you can get). Since I'm fairly new at making amvs, I lightened my load a bit by only using footage of the planes, while keeping people out of it as much as possible. This made the job a lot easier because I didn't have to worry about plot etc..
So ultimately, it was just a way for me, a newbie at this, to take a stab at it while keeping a fairly fresh theme going.
