Comments:
Pink Floyd's "Echoes", from the album Meddle, is a 23-minute long song and sound painting that would be the one piece, if I had to select one piece, that best defines the nature of Pink Floyd and their sound. Combined with the beautiful dance and fencing scenes from Princess Tutu and the gunfight and memory-filled fall from the church where Spike confronted Vicious in Cowboy Bebop, "Echoes" develops a story that is sometimes hopeful, sometimes exciting, sometimes calming, sentimental, or forlorn. The whole thing is fairly abstract (though the video does work with the most of the lyrical passages at the points in the song in which they appear), and would probably appeal most to the same people that enjoyed the Wizard of Oz / Dark Side of the Moon sync or going to the ballet. That being said, this is a very beautiful piece, if not a source of side-splitting laughter, and something worth checking out sometime when you have 20-something minutes to spare.

The lyrics (for those of you - probably most of you - unfamiliar with the song):
Overhead the albatross
hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the wheres or whys
But something stares and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light
Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
And no one speaks
And no one tries
And no one flies around the sun
Cloudless everyday you fall
Upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise.
And through the window in the wall
Comes streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of mourning
And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
And so I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the skies.
