Having been raised on Warner Brothers cartoons, this just seemed like a perfect fit for me.
I found the song on a Dr. Demento CD and I just had to use it. I had to hunt up a copy of the original "What's Opera, Doc?" cartoon from a nearby video rental establishment. Of course the video and audio quality of that tape was horrible, but it was the only source I could find.
From there I had to locate some CDs of Warner Brothers cartoon music. Since the original audio was horrible, I decided to rekey it from a CD master, which is what I did. While I was at it, I found the clip of Elmer saying "Good Evening Ladies and Gentleman" as well as the ending stinger music and Porky Pig's trademarked saying. All of this became useful audio fodder.
The last step was to tape hours upon hours of Warner Brothers shows from a certain 24 cartoon station that will remain nameless. I must have watched at least two hundred hours of various cartoons just to find the 30 seconds or so of extra Elmer Fudd footage I was looking for.
So everything pretty much came together after that. I bluescreened Ryo-ohki out of the opening credits of Tenchi Universe (where he / she / it dives into the pile of leaves) and used that for the initial encounter with Elmer. I also clipped Bugs Bunny out of the Elmer Fudd side of the scene, making Ryo-ohki take his place.
I then searched through all of the Tenchi footage I had, just to find clips that had similar backgrounds to the scenes where Elmer was running. Easier said than done.
Incidentally, the original song is about twice as long, but it ends up with Elmer winning, which is what happened in the original Warner Brothers cartoon. Since I had to have Ryo-ohki win (or face the wrath of hundreds of Tenchi fans) I had to play fast and loose with the lyrics.
