This was yet another track for a Mep, however this one actually got finished unlike Offspring. I was allowed to select the music for this one, so I chose The Perfect by Circus Dawn (terrible band by the way, don't bother looking into them, none of their other music sounds like this). Arashinome and I had always joked about making a more serious version of The Collector with this song, focusing on Cloud and troubles that he carries with him.
Well his birthday rolled around and I wanted to show him my spin on it in his 2008 birthday Mep. Out of 4 days of editing came this, and I must say I'm very pleased with it. It felt incredibly focused for an Advent Children video, and it flows incredibly smoothly; the imagery, the effects, the cuts all illustrate perfectly (at least in my eyes) Cloud's struggle to let go of his memories. I experimented a lot with black and white with this video; for example, all of Cloud's dream sequences are in color, while his waking life constantly remains shades of grey. In the end however, his realities become confused as his memories consume him entirely, and even his happy memories shift to the same grey overtones.
This video has been criticized by those who have seen it to be too short, or feeling unfinished and all I have to say to that is maybe what you feel is intentional. It definitely wasn't an intended effect of the editing itself, but it's interesting to note how that feeling of incompleteness mirrors Cloud's own emotions. To me, that definitely feels like a successful piece of art.
Interesting side note to this project: This is the first AMV uploaded to AMV.org to feature this song.
