Okay, so this is the video I made in two hours in front of a crowd at AWA 8 for the Iron Chef competition. I knew ahead of time that Spirited Away and Whisper of the Heart would be among the source footage, but I wasn't sure about anything else. Neverending Story was one of about 10 possible songs I had chosen to use for the audio, and I actually didn't decide to use it until a day or two before the project. I didn't have an actual idea for the video, but I figured it would be a good, generic song to use for quick editing. Also, I figured that no matter what the "secret ingredient" turned out to be, I would most likely be able to incorporate it.
About a week before the contest, I watched Whisper of the Heart to familiarize myself with the footage, and the day I was supposed to fly out to Atlanta, I watched bits and pieces of Spirited Away while at work.
So the contest finally arrived, and I was nervous as hell. Joe Croasdaile (my opponent) seemed to have a pretty good idea of what he was doing, but I remembered how difficult it had been for me to edit quickly on the fly the year before. When the "secret ingredient" was revealed to be the Secret of Nimh, I knew I would have a pretty easy fit. The other sources were Metropolis, Five Star Stories, Geobreeders, and Panda Go Panda. I knew immediately that Geobreeders and Panda Go Panda wouldn't have any useful footage for my video, so I didn't even bother with those.
The first clip I looked through was a random clip from late in Spirited Away. My jaw dropped. From what I had seen before, I knew that Haku (I think that's the guy's name) transforms into a dragon, but I had NO idea that there were scenes in which Sen rides the dragon just like Bastien rides the luck dragon Falcor in the original Neverending Story movie!! Needless to say, I tried to use those scenes as much as possible during the choruses. I basically decided to make a nostalgic fantasy video, with the focus being both the dragon scenes and the storybook elements of Whisper of the Heart and Secret of Nihm. A few random clips from Metropolis and Five Star Stories were used for their visual content to fill in some gaps.
All in all, I had a wonderful time making this video, and am pretty happy with how it came out -- though, watching it now, months later, I cringe at some of the sloppiness of the editing. Then again, I only had 2 hours to do it, and people were watching me the whole time ^^;;
Accessories while editing:
Rum & Coke from Rob
Punch from James
Bunny ears from Nathan Bezner (Nightowl)
