Inuyasha began his life as an outcast, the hanyou son of a human mother and a youkai father. He was his father's second child after Sesshoumaru, a cold and distant youkai who hates all humans and hanyou. The father of Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru was once a great taiyoukai, a gigantic dog monster which ruled the Western lands. Inuyasha's father had a soft spot for humans, and chose a human female as his second mate. Soon after Inuyasha was born, his father was killed in a battle with the dragon Ryuukususei. His mother remained with him until he was a young boy, and childhood was hard. No one would accept him since he was not a human, and not a youkai. His mother soon left him alone too, stolen by death, and the young hanyou was forced to face the dangerous, unkind world alone.
Inuyasha became very angry inside due to his life of loss and being outcasted. Even his only remainig relative, Sesshoumaru, had nothing to do with him. Inuyasha made it his goal to steal the Shikon no Tama, a jewel with dark powers which could make him a full youkai. It was guarded by the priestess Kikyou, and the two shared an unusual respect - Kikyou later told him that she could never kill him, since both of them were in the same position: she, too, could not live as a normal human, due to her job as guardian of the tama. On the day they spoke Inuyasha became captivated by the look on her melancholy face, and lost the will the be mischeivious.
He later agreed to use the Shikon no Tama to become human, so it would become purified and they could both live together peacefully as normal humans.
Inuyasha and Kikyou shared a short-lived romance, however, which ended in tradgedy. Onigumo, A demented theif who was rendered immobile by a fire, had become obsessed with Kikyou who had been caring for him. In his desire to have her and corrupt her, he allowed a swarm of youkai to merge with him to give him a strong, powerful body. Onigumo then became Naraku, a powerful shape-shifting youkai. Naraku yearned for the Shikon no Tama to rid himself of his human side, so he tricked Kikyou and Inuyasha into hating eachother. This he did on the scheduled day that the tama would be purified, the day Inuyasha would become human.
Naraku stole Kikyou's form and attacked Inuyasha, firing arrows at him. Thinking that it was all a trap to kill him, Inuyasha attacked Kikyou's village and stole the jewel, his heart shattered by betrayal. Kikyou, too, had been tricked - stealing Inuyasha's form, Naraku snached the jewel and ripped open Kikyou's shoulder with his claws. Kikyou went back to the villiage to find the real Inuyasha fleeing with the jewel - and used the last of her power to seal him to a holy tree, the Goshinboku. This rendered him dead, or at least in slumber, unless the arrow was removed. Kikyou then collapsed from her wounds, dying. She asked her younger sister, Kaede, to burn the jewel with her remains.
