- Profile: A virtual Benjamin Button of Anime fandom....although I grew up watching Star Blazers (aka Space Battleship Yamato) and Battle of the Planets (aka bastardized Gatchaman) and of course Speed Racer, and I even saw AKIRA my freshman year of college with the confusing AF 1988 dub, I didn't become a "serious" anime fan until Cowbow Bebop aired on cable TV and didn't become a collector of anime until 2004, well past the so-called "Otaku Expiration Date" at Age 30. I've only become a more dedicated anime fan with age and my enthusiasm has never diminished. My formative anime years were shows from the early 2000s which I watched religiously circa 2008-2009 on rental DVDs from Netflix and from my local Hastings Books & Records. I also grew in my fandom thanks to Anime at the Alamo Drafthouse in Houston, first at West Oaks Mall, then at Mason Park and finally at La Centerra until the Pandemic more or less killed it for good. My first Anime con was A-Kon 2008 but I didn't start seriously attending until Oni-Con 2011 and beyond. I attended Anime Matsuri in blissful ignorance until I could no longer ignore the garbage fires running it. Delta H Con is my only "local" con left. I attended my first Otakon in 2021, then Anime NYC 2021, then SakuraCon 2022, Anime Boston 2022 and most recently Kumoricon 2022 and in 2023 I hope to make it to Otafest in Calgary, Canada.
