JOURNAL: Esrhan (Jari Perho)

  • Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock 2007-10-12 05:18:32 What's on the list today? A somewhat long Hitchcock movie DVD marathon including:
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934)
    The 39 Steps (1935)
    Secret Agent (1936)
    Sabotage (1936)
    Young and Innocent (1937)
    The Lady Vanishes (1938)
    Jamaica Inn (1939)

All are probably on the must-watch list for editors, so hopefully we'll manage to watch them all. The next marathon will include a rather different set. Citizen Kane for example.

On a side note, it's pretty odd to start your day off by having a vivid dream about your ex, where you succesfully ask her out on a date again. Go figure.
  • aRTO 2007-10-11 13:20:52 This week was rather fun and interesting as we had our first studio project going on. We shot a pretty simple conversation session that happened in the studio and our edit line handled the video mixing process and also recorded the show. Other lines, the camera/lighting, production and sound worked the rest, but everyone participated according to their own field. One guy in the producer's line even got a chance to setup a talk show idea of his own on the second day which he had planned some time ago. I guess you could loosely translate the title of his show to "slaughterhouse" and it was pretty much just a quick interview of two guys who are part of a heavy metal band called Scarecrow. Appearently he intends to make more episodes of it with other guests, get the episodes to YLE (a Finnish broadcasting company) and keep shooting it at aRTO with us.

I only got a chance to mix the fourth program that was planned and recorded yesterday. For some reason, I'm at the moment more interested in this line of work than I am about editing, which is why I initially even signed up for these classes. It can be a rather intense moment when the cameras are rolling and you have an experienced director next to you, telling to what camera you should cut to.

We really are there learning thru practice how to work in this business, so unfortunately the time tends to stretch to evening hours and I am left with very little time to edit anything at home. My current project, the earlier mentioned Punisher music video, won't be getting ready anytime soon. I have literature on filming and cutting to read, a new relationship to keep an eye on and some minor homework to sort. On the other hand, I already have something on tape which I mixed, so I am getting at least some output.

I'm surprisingly content in my current life situation. Our education is only in the beginning too, so there's plenty of good times ahead. And a free day tomorrow!
  • Coffee and Studies 2007-09-14 09:52:14 Studying seems to increase one's coffee intake. I've never been much of a coffee person, but sitting on your ass and listening to the teachers for over 6 hours a day, a cup of coffee in the afternoon sure hits the spot. Not that they are boring people to listen to, but I'm really bad at waking up early and keep going for the whole day.

Speaking of teachers, it's quite interesting that our teachers at ARTO are professionals who have worked in the business for many years. People who know the practical side of what they are teaching us about and they really bring up what it's all about. One guy has even been working in the media business since he was 14 years old, and has seen some pretty old methods and hardware along the way. A bit amusing, since us students there are around 20-28 and are just starting our efforts at getting into it. Things were a bit different back then of course and it would be rather impossible to do nowadays. The good news is that there aren't too many professional video editors around who could handle a variety of tasks (a lot are retiring as well), so I'm not in the worst position in this all.

Fall is slowly making it's way here which is nice. I'm more of a winter person anyway.
  • Adulta's Radio and Television Institute 2007-09-05 10:03:55 Tomorrow's a short schoolday then. I was hoping to have my Punisher music video done by now, but fixing the damn problem with my computer took too long and threw everything off.

    I'll do it later.
  • At long last. 2007-08-28 11:36:19 I finally managed to fix the damn thing. Didn't take more than a week too...
