  • Standing in the dark I was waiting for man to come / I am beautiful and clean and so very very young / to be standing in the street to be taken by someone 2002-03-22 14:31:14 OK... I need opinions on this song.

... is it too slow/crap/obscure for an amv?

It would be for Boogiepop Phanton and the images would be very dark intense and graphic which would hopefully keep interest.

rename it an mp3 and give it a listen:

    http://www.penguinhosting.net/~zettai/ghosts.zip

It's Ghosts by Japan [an early 80's new-romantic track] although it is a version with recently re-recorded vocals. I'd probably mix the vocals of this version with the original cause although I love David Sylvian's voice, he doesn't sing the chorus quite as passionately in this version.

I also have a bizarre idea for an eva/kare kano (read: shinji/arima) crossover video. I'll let you know ^_^
  • "and when I thought/ I could not be stopped/ when my chance came to be king..." 2002-03-22 12:19:52 Well, it's another fine comedy link day for all you guys and gals in amv world today.

Well, I think that's enough random linkage from me today. Thinking about Boogiepop amv but am worried about the song beig too slow, I'll post it here for you guys to listen to later on.

    Ja ne ^_^
  • I'll sing myself to sleep / A song from the darkest hour / Secrets I can't keep / Inside of the day 2002-03-21 13:27:01 I don't know if I'm alone in this but I'm the kind of person who doesn't really like really popular things.

It's not really because they aren't good or not the kind of thing I'd like, but there's something about hype and everyone else being a fan of someting which makes me less likely to like it.

For example: in 1992 I really liked Nirvana. For the UK, they were new, they were angry and the just had this certain energy that was lacking in the UK guitar bands at the time. In 1992 it was either old school RAWK or new-wave techno and although I did have a slight thing for the UK techno/rave scene at the time there was something really appealing about this grunge thing.

So, I bought Nevermind, bounced around and generally enjoyed it.

Later on, Kurt dies. The UK suddenly wake up to this thing called Nirvana and sales rocket. I stop liking them.

Suddenly Nirvana became tiresome... tedious... old hat. I found myself saying things like "the only good thing they ever did was their cover of The Man Who Sold the World and it wasn't as good as the original"... just so I could be different.

I still quite like a bit of Nirvana from time to time but I'll never like them as much as I did in 1992.

Now, Nirvana was an import that, for a while, managed to stay niché, obscure and hence desirable by me. The instant it becomes the norm, it's not my thing.

Why is it that I only ever really really like stuff that is different?

Take Sublime as the next example. There aren't any UK releases of Sublime albums - you can only import them. Now, I'm sure there's lots of you out there who may well be sick to death of Sublime. For you they might be your equivalent of The Verve or something - overplayed by student radio and everyone has the same old poster. For me, they are a musical cornucopia. I can never get enough of 40oz to freedom.

If Sublime ever got big over here (for some odd reason), I bet I'd stop liking them.

I don't know why but I could see it happening.

It's probably very foolish of me and because of that I miss out on being part of an era. I was never part of the Indie/Britpop revolution in the late 90's (see the James lyrics above). When schoolmates were buying Ocean Colour Scene and Gorkys Zigotic Myncy (or whatever they are called) I was getting the US pop/rock equivalents(kinda) - the gin blossoms, sister hazel ... you know - just to be different.

But it means I dont have the same shared nostalgia as those who almost drowned in mud at Glastonbury. I wont be able to say I took part in the CD Single race of 1997 and chose Blur instead of Oasis.

Oh well, I doubt I'd ever change. I'd rather buy the next Burt Bacharach album than the next Limp Bizkit album and if everyone started listening to Burt then I'd probably have to rebel and go into a whole Captain Beefheart phase. ^_^

    Nevermind, eh? :P
  • "I'm nearly peed my pants (nearly peed my pants yeah-ehh)" 2002-03-21 08:40:30 Well, my webhost seems to have gone tits up today. I can't get to their main website or anything.

I guess they are having "issues", which is great timing given the audio guide stuff I'm doing.

    Horny girls... niiiiiice.

    Thanks EK.

amizadai: That's one cool Dylan coincidence ^_^ check this out: http://www.airfarce.com/video/020222.html

Dylan mumbles through the news ^^

If my webhost decides to ressurect itself, I might put my first video back up in celebration of the imminent 1000 people viewing my profile. I've got about 950 views so far and they had shot up tons recently.

It's probably not much to some of you guys but it's a good a reason for improving the picture quality on my first vid as any ^_^

    Look forward to it ;p
  • Johnny's in the basement / Mixing up the medicine / I'm on the pavement / Thinking about the government 2002-03-20 13:59:38 Getting drunk during the daytime is such a strange experience.

    today I've realised two things:

    1) One bottle of wine is not enough, yet two is too much.

    2) Passing out at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, waking up at eight and still feeling drunk really messes with your awareness of what time it is and what you should be doing.

It's been a fun day though. Got a lot done. I still owe alternatefutures a review, which I'll hopefully get done later tonight.

Anyway, in case you were wondernig what all the beat poetry / bob dylan lyrics were about earlier, I'd just been reminded of a conversation Wednesday and I had at MinamiCon about the amv panel we were going to do. It was Saturday night.... late... in the bar. We were more than a little apprehensive of the whole amv panel thing and were tempted to just go crazy and scare everyone away. Weds then bame up with this idea to do a homage to Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues video. (If you haven't heard that song go and find it now, it's great - it's from the album "Bringing It All Back Home")

I don't know if you've see that Dylan vid but it's basically Dylan standing there with cue cards with the lyrics of the song written on and he drops them as the song is played. It's such a cool vid, and a very cool if random beatnik song. Weds thought it would be good to just do that for the amv panel. We had a guitar so we could just play that, change the lyrics and drop cards that said

    "don't want bizkit"
    "Linkin Park skate kids"
    "messin' up rythmn"
    "fuckin' with lyrics"
    "look out kid"
    "See what you did"
    "God knows how"
    "but your doin it now"
"You better duck down the alley way"
    "jumpin out of windows"
"cause we will kick your ass for those"
    "Dragonball Videos"
    *plays the harmonica*

It was a great idea... one of those truly inspired drunken moments that I'm sure Jack Kerouac would have been proud of.

Shame we didn't have the balls to do it. It was a case of too late, too drunk and no pens.

    I didn't have my harmonica either ^_^;;;
