Well, I was listening to some Beefheart today (the Trout Mask Replica album) and trying to imagine what a beefheart amv would look like.

I saw lots of very strange bits of editing, lots of warped footage, lots of things layered in a really obscene way.

Yeah, definitely there would have to be a lot of footage that really shouldn't be mixed together. This would take some serious editing work. What I thought would be the ultimate way to match the Captain's style would be to have footage blended together perfectly in one scene but the actual content of the scene to be at odds with each other.

See, with much of his music individual parts are often good melodies... but they become agressive and disjointed when played at the same time or when combined with something out of joint. So, I think in order to duplicate that there would have to be lots of footage that was being unashamedly forced together creating a really uncomfortable visual effect to match the uncomfortable audio.

This is why I concluded that it would be the most difficult amv I could ever think of doing - in part because it goes against all natural video making notions.

Anyway, if you do think of a solid idea for one, let me know ^_^
  • "...and I can't sing a love song / The way it's meant to be" 2002-03-28 09:05:39 EK: Ditto. I've actually felt like this since MinamiCon. I guess you're probably right - burnout. I always have loads of work to do for cons, and that's fine but afterwards I cant do anything for myself.

I probably should have been working on the Kare Kano picsub but for some reason I've been putting it off. I've been getting ideas for vids but not really wanting to commit to them and all the things I'd normally do just seem like a chore or just aren't really motivating me at the moment.

Everything I'm doing right now is being done by request and even then I'm reluctant. I think the only thing I've actually enjoyed doing was the audio guide just because it was something a little different and it's been a while since I've written anything substantial.

Not wanting to do tings at the moment is a weird feeling because you forget why you did things before and that's a funny thing.

I'm sure something will motivate me. I'd really like to work on this joint Turboneko project but we're a little low on ideas. I need a joint project of some kind, that's for sure... I don't think I have enough motivation or inspiration for me at the moment so having someone else to bounce off would probably help ^_^

Drednott: a Captain Beefheart amv would be just insane. I think it would probably be the hardest amv that I could think of making. In order to have something that would work with that music you'd need some pretty messed up and eclectic visuals... it would be seriously hard work and the net result would probably be "wah?"

It'd make quite an interesting anti-video though ^_^

Anyway, I should get back to what I was doing.... which was... oh, nothing. I remember now.

that's been posted on the amv.org Off Topic forum like 3 times already

You are not persecuted, so cheer up.

Kusoyaro: I know exactly how you feel. I've been what can easily be described as a lazy bum over the last couple of days. Productivity? Creativity? ...where?

Will I ever make a new amv? Will Chet ever secure his fortune? Find out on an Invitation to Love... tonight at 8.

Actually, I'm feeling quite sadistic in terms of amv making at the moment. I think it's possibly an effect of the post-PFS amv world but I'm majorly tempted to do an amv to some Captain Beefheart.

It makes no sense, noboday would like it, it would be impossible to time and it would bear no relevance to any anime ever. But I really want to do one. I think I'm going crazy - here's some sweet sweet Beefheart lyrics for you:

    My human gets me blues....

"I saw yuh baby dancin' in your x-ray gingham dress
I knew you were under duress
I knew you were under yer dress
    Just keep comin' Jesus
    Your the best dressed
You look dandy in the sky but you don't scare me
Cause I got you here in my eye
In this lifetime you got m'humangetsmeblues
With yer jaw hangin' slack n' yer hair's curlin'
Like an ole navy fork stickin' in the sunset
The way you were dancin' I knew you'd never come back
You were strainin' t' keep yer
    Old black cracked patent shoes
In this lifetime you got m'humangetsmeblues
Well the way you'd been ole lady
I could see the fear in yer windows
    Under yer furry crawlin' brow
Uh silver bow rings up in inches
You were afraid you'd be the devils red wife
But it's alright God dug yer dance
'n would have you young 'n in his harum
Dress you the way he wants cause he never had uh doll
Cause everybody made him uh boy
'n God didn't think t' ask his preference
You can bring yer dress 'n yer favorite dog
    'n yer husbands cane
    'n yer old spotted dog
    Cause in this lifetime
    You've got m'humangetsmeblues "

Can't you just see a Magical Stage Fancy La La video to that?

    ^_^;;;

  • "did you finally get the chance to dance upon the light of day/ and head back to the milky way?" 2002-03-27 08:51:10 Welcome, AbsoluteDestiny.
1000 people have viewed your profile.

That's quite cool. Of course, I'm sure most of them wil be leechers or people thinking "Who the hell is this loudmouth assbag"? But that's ok, I guess. Of course this is tiny in comparision to some of you guys but it's not too terrible for someone who hasn't made any famous amvs.

I found one of my amvs on someone's amv cd-trade list once, so I was quite happy about that.

Anyway, in celebration of this prestigious(!) moment, an appropriate gift: My first ever amv is back up!! In all it's rough goodness. Ah well, it still beats most of these DBZ Linkin Park vids.

It also means I can point newbies to it when they bitch about me giving them a bad review for their first vid.

I'm going through that whole "yeah that might be a cool amv but it won't be anything special so don't bother making it" phase at the moment. I think I'm coming to the conclusion that unless you have a truly great song, you cannot make a truly great amv. I have some pretty cool ideas for things I want to do but I just don't really think the songs are necessarily good enough.

It's so annoying when the great songs don't inspire great amvs when the mediocre songs give you ideas all the time.

In other news, the AIDS problem in Africa is causing kids to prefer having sex with goats because of fear of infection.

Wasn't it that sort of thing that brought about AIDS in the first place???

  • "hey la my boyfriend's back" 2002-03-26 02:02:53 EK, is it me or does that gun say BBT - 268170 ?

If it does, then I guess I must be a bigger nerd than you =p

...or at least as big as :D

(for those of you who still are none the wiser, there is a spaceship in one of EK's fave anime that is called Bebop 268170)

I'm approaching 1000 profile hits so I'm making my first ever video available again. It's a bit crap and the picture quality is really below par, IMO, but it has some redeeming features and I know its a *lot* better than a lot of first video attempts.

It's not uploaded yet but it probably will be by tonight. Are you ready for the industrial technoshock goodness?
