JOURNAL: AbsoluteDestiny (Ian Roberts)

  • 2002-04-29 15:17:34 amizadai: I think you've got it wrong. You pay for hosting and then anyone can get your videos.

Or at least, that's how I interpret

"All of the videos you've created uploaded and easily available."

    Best ask Phade, though
  • 2002-04-28 13:56:14 Amizadai:

OK, I've actually opened a big (slightly misleading) can of worms here with the eskimo words thing. Let me explain.

It is or it isn't a hoax depending on who you read.

Geoffrey K. Pullum, _The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax_ (Chicago, 1991),
    pp. 168-171:

This is the article that goes about dispelling what is a popular belief that eskimos have more words for snow than we do in english, because they have more need for snow words.

See, the importance of the eskimo vocabulary theory being true is that it is in accordance with the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis which says the language we use determines how we experience the world and how we express that experience, also known as linguistic determinism.

Now, the truth of the matter is much in doubt, mainly because of the argument that you can understand a concept of something without knowing the word for it. There is also much debate about whether or not having more words for something is a good or bad thing in terms of our ability for expression.

If you are interested in the whole thing, then I'm sure a google search on eskimo snow words and/or the sapir-whorf hypothesis would be fruitful. It's an interesting topic but with many caveats.

  • Don't know what she's singing but place lyrics from Haco's "A Fragment" here :P 2002-04-28 13:07:12 Amizadai: The whole Eskimos having millions of words for the word snow was a joke essay written by a linguist. It's not true.

I've written essays on this subject, it's interesting but the different arguments often contradict each other in various places.

It is likely that the separation of linguisitc associations may well be genetic... but that's a long essay ^_^

Funny thing happened today - one of my friends accidentally ICQ'd me instead of someone else and started flirting with me ^o^ poor tim:

    [10:29] Zettai: hi tim ^^
    [10:29] Pisquee: how are you?
[10:29] Pisquee: I'm currently completely naked!
    [10:29] Pisquee: ;-)
[10:29] Zettai: well, I'm not naked, but fine nonetheless
    [10:30] Pisquee: LOL

    <snip>

[10:34] Pisquee: not naked anymore - half dressed!
[10:35] Zettai: *removes hands from eyes*
    [10:35] Zettai: :P
[10:36] Pisquee: if you saw me naked your hands would not be on your eyes!
    [10:36] Zettai: well, I can't fault that logic ^_^
    [10:38] Pisquee: ;-)
[10:39] Pisquee: and my hands would be all over you!
[10:39] Pisquee: so would my tongue!
    [10:40] Zettai: erm.... tim....
    [10:41] Pisquee: :-)
[10:41] Zettai: are you sure you're typing this stuff in the right window?
    [10:42] Zettai: ;p
    [10:42] Pisquee: definately!
[10:43] Pisquee: and i would have you screaming in sheer ecstacy!
[10:43] Pisquee: anyway i need to get goin gofr work
[10:43] Pisquee: speak to you later!
[10:43] Zettai: Ok, I have the name of a good doctor right here... I'll just get the number
    [10:43] Pisquee: LOL

Only later did he realise he got the screen names mixed up. Ooooops.

He was very embarrased but at least it was me and not someone who might have taken offense ^_^
  • "I love all of you; hurt by the cold./So hard and lonely too, when you don't know yourself" 2002-04-28 10:38:43 Wow.... Operation: Golden Donut sounds pretty exciting.

I'm looking forward to the official announcement. I have a feeling that it will entail skills I don't have but it will really be worth doing. The rewards sonud fantastic.

You're all wonering what I'm talking about but I'm sure Phade will announce it soon enough.

I'm finally getting the FLCL audio dramas translated for me, so I will be able to follow up the highly sucessful Eva picsub I made. With any luck, the FLCL one will actually be accompanied by animation - we'll see.

I think I'm going to work on some more amv stuff tonight, I put it off too much.

EK: Sorry to hear about your amv turds. Ganbatte, ne?
  • Malchovich Malchovich, Malchovich Malchovich Malchovich. Malchovich Malchovich Malchovich Malchovich. 2002-04-27 17:52:31 I finally saw Battle Royale today.

That movie pressed all the right buttons. Definitely what I needed today. Is it true that it's not going to get a US release? That's a real shame if it's true - I could see it being a huge cult hit in the states.

Although I do find it a little worrying that I find japanese schoolkids inherently fascinating.... even when they are butchering each other.

It looks like everyone is really bored on the amv forum today. The haiku thread is evidence of this.

Or maybe it's just me being bored and projecting it on everyone else :P Yeah, that'll be it.

Marco reminded me today of how ignorant us brits are of other languages. I know no Italian. At all. Not a scrap.

It's a shame, because European languages are all pretty easy, it's just that I'm so lazy when it comes to learning languages. It's very bad of me - I'd love to have a good working knowledge of a few languages, I just don't have the patience.

    That's just me all over.

EK: thanks for the birthday greet. As usual I am completely amazed by people who can draw and paint so effortlessly. That speed painting job you did on spike... I couldn't do that in a week let alone in 30 minutes using that method.

I'll stick to amvs... they're much easier ^^
