No, not the poem by Dante - a band. A UK indie band who are a little difficult to describe.

I think the closest I can get to describing this band is this:

Imagine Noel Coward did silly pop music.

They're ok, have a fairly lighthearted satirical-based popiness and are generally adored by students and late teenagers. I'm not a follower of the band; they're one of those bands that my friends like but I'm indifferent too but I figured that some of you would at least be interested in hearing this eclectic british indie pop band. They're kinda retro and they do a lot of mimickery - they often have the sorts of orchestras and horn sections you'd expect in 60's songs by Burt Bacharach or Carol King.

    rename to mp3

This is a song about the Michael Caine character Alfie (from the film of the same name). The N.H.S. is the National Health Service that provide free healthcare and (in particular to this song) a kind of cheap free pair of glasses with big black frames that Alfie wears in the film and are referred to in the chorus of the song. It's what I was quoting (singing :P) in my last entry.

Apparently they have had US releases of their albums (or at least the albums listed on cdnow.com aren't all imports) but I'm not sure how "known" they are.

Then again, I'm always amazed to hear people talking about bands like Belle and Sebastian... I didn't imagine anyone in the states being in to them.

    Anyway, there you go.
  • "the more I look through them the more I see/ I'm becoming more like Alfie" 2002-05-02 11:37:57 Well, it appears that Kodocha anime are finally going to distro my fansubs of Kodocha episodes 37 to 40.

About time too, I've only had them subbed for over 7 months.

    *rolls eyes*

    EK: 20,000....

    20,000?

    20,000!!?!?!?!!

That's a lot of journal hits.

Thank you for the stuff over the last few days - the mp3s and the minivids, all good stuff as usual.

It was a little weird hearing japanese gospel at first but it didn't take me long to get into.

Do any of you guys know of a band called The Divine Comedy? They're a british indie band that I think some of you might like but I don't know if they've had much US coverage.

I'll get an mp3... be back soon ^^

when you did magical fruit I knew you'd proved that nothing was sacred.

There was a line, an imaginary limit that existed in my head as to what you can do to wonerful works such as bebop.

    Magical Fruit extended that line.

However, I think you've completely destroyed it now. There now are no limits to how shameful an amv can be. Pandora's box is opened.

It's your fault that I'm doing a Loudon Wainright III amv. Yeah, that's right, your fault... I didn't already have it planned or anything

    *sweatdrops*

Seriously, I don't know what was scarier... the fact that you though about that vid longer than a milisecond or the fact that I knew what song you were going to use when you mentioned Johnny Cash.

I don't even *like* country. Gah...

OK, I feel musically unclean now... I must go and play 10 Tim Buckleys and a Miles Davis.

    :/

It's none of my business, clearly, but I feel I have to respond to your journal entry.

So you're quitting because you're not the best? Were your reasons for making amvs one-upmanship? That doesn't sound like a great reason to make videos... and it could explain in part why your videos aren't being as well-received as you'd expect. If you were really only here to do something better than someone else then perhaps amv creation isn't for you because as far as I can tell the people who make outstanding amvs are usually pretty surprised by their success - they were just making them because they wanted to not because they wanted to make videos that would be popular.

Anyway.... don't you enjoy making amvs? I'm sure you like getting an idea, working on it and see it come to fruition. So, someone thinks your video making skills aren't up to par with other creators - that doesn't mean people can't and won't enjoy your videos.

I must admit, I'm a little surprised by your journal entry. I've seen you be fairly harsh, aggressive and arrogant in the past about amv making - and I really didn't think much of your threats to ErMaC... it all just seemed a bit over-the-top. I now read your journal entry which reads like 'I'm not aprreciated, I'm not a success, I've failed' and it just makes me think that you were possibly trying too hard.

I actually have you to thank for my continuing efforts in amv making, as you were the first person to offer me hosting for my videos which was a great way for me to enter into the internet amv community.

I enjoyed your "Hell that is..." video and was pleasently surprised to hear friends talk about it, to which I'd reply "Oh, you mean TommyRude's video with the manga images at the start? That's a fun vid." I haven't seen any others, admittedly, but I sure wouldn't say you can't make amvs.

Your videos do entertain and I don't see any reason why you shouldn't continue making them. If all you want is to beat someone, then I do have less enthusiasm about having that as the driving force for your amv creation but in terms of just plain making a video that you'd like and hoping others enjoy it - you can do that and I'm sure you can get better.

I don't think you've "peaked", but you've had a video that you tried hard to make and it didn't succeed in the way you thought. That's no reason to just quit. It happens to the best of em.

On the other hand, if you really think that there's no point in making videos that aren't the best then perhaps amv making will just continue to frustrate you. Obviously, it's up to you what you do but I'm sure you can still make entertaining vids - which is what it's all about.
  • "hotel, motel Holiday Inn..." 2002-04-30 12:03:00 Are all AMV contests breeding grounds for bitterness, anger, upset and back-stabbing?

It seems that not a con goes by where someone has some major gripe with the running of a contest. It's more than a "can't please all the people all the time" thing.

It sure seems to be taken pretty seriously.

I dunno. I *do* know that I'm not really a big fan of that kind of competitiveness so I'm wondering whether it would be worth showing my videos as non-competitive.

Again, I'm not sure. I think I'd like to have one try at a contest. Maybe I could have one competing and one display vid.

I will probably have 2 vids for AWA... I don't know if they'd get shown but it would be nice to see one of my vids at my first US con. I think the AWA AMV Expo is what I'm looking for.
