Butternaaaaacht, Rotoscoping Robin and too much ass.
2004-03-13 03:18:44
What originally started as a quick project to show a couple of effects to my students has now snowballed into a massive video project.
Originally it was going to be just a quick... lots of explosions timed to music and some footage to tie it all together. Sort of like a Jackie Chan movie. Now I've gone and resquenced about 80% of all the footage, added subtitle sequences to move my little story along, and a crapload of rotoscoping. Pm me and I'll show you what I mean.
I suppose it's my own damm fault for trying to make a video that runs counter to the series. To top it all of Robin (of witch hunter robin) is so deadpan that finding a scene where she's actually emoting has turned into a challenge all on it's own.
Since this is supposed to be a demonstration project on 'how to do it right' I can't cut corners like I'm wont to do. So every little sequence takes for freakin ever. On top of that I've got about half the school always coming into my class, and either wanting help with whatever, or wanting to play games.. or just wanting to come in and watch anime. (I keep a tv and a library of disks. Along with some wireless headphones, I let the students watch anime at breaktimes). The other half seems intent on being as loud and obnoxious as humanly possible. On top of that, since we're a small school we don't have substitutes when a teacher is out, we just have a teacher watch that class instead of using the period to plan. Unfortunately the one that seems to get the detail the most is.. you might have guessed: me. Plus about half of my students are like "I don't want to study computers, I want to go play basketball" Losers. They'd be lucky to get a typing program at a regular school.
And WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE PANTS these days? Seriously, how comfortable is it to wear your pants BELOW your ass? When they sit down, they look like they are on the toilet the pants are so low. I don't get it. Then again, I've never understood 150.oo shoes. Hell, that's six disks of anime!
I had asked Pwolf a question about AX, and when I mentioned it my students looked at me like I'd just spoken to jesus. If you're reading this Pwolf, you apparently have a fan club!

Rambling... Teaching... avisynth... teaching.... rambling.
2004-02-29 02:06:39
I tend to cruise the help forums every now and again. I'm sure that I'm now hated by many for my pedantic and repetitive comments. :P~
Lately though I've been getting into more and more avisynth stuff, and it occured to me just how ironic that is. You see I teach a class, and I help my students to AVS's. As cool as it must be to have a teacher that does this, I wonder if I'm handicapping them. You see, since I have to work on a mix of older and new systems, (upgrading software when we get enough licenses) I can't really justify using the avisynth method since it won't run on all the systems. I have all the videos saved as picvideo (qual 19) on a server that they can all work with. Since 90% of them are only going to go onto an svcd and never be seen in the light of day again this works fine. the only problem is that inevitably, since I encourage them to visit the .org they want to upload their stuff. Now, I could encode everything for them, but isn't getting the right video quality a big part of the whole project? I think so. I know when I make my stuff I get pissed at every little jaggie.
My 'kids' don't care, hell a lot of them live in the projects, or don't even have a computer or DVD player at home. I had to invest some of my own money getting some hardware just to output to tape so they could show their parents. On another note, ever note how it's the high school students that don't have jack who put the most effort in? I have some students that come in and brag about how great they are at everything, and sleep through class, earning a big fat "F" at the end of the year. See you next time jerk, my class is now a required subject.
I have one student, he's been strugling with some Eminem Dragonballz thing for the longest time, totally pissed because right next to him are a couple of students that have cranked out four videos (decent but not likely to earn an oscar or anything) in the time since he started. I had to remind him that doing something like this should be for enjoyment, otherwise what's the point? He didn't get it, so I used my own background as an example: Teaching, which pays very little, or doing something that everyone thought was the ultimate in cool, and making a fistfull of money.

An onosecond occurs in my classrom
2003-11-22 00:51:15
The definition of an onosecond is the time between performing an action and realizing that you should not have. ( Oh no! = onosecond in case you didn't get it.)
In my classroom, I use my computer as a storage for AV material, some 7-800 songs that students have brought in other the years, and about 15 DVD's of video converted to YUV 360x240 for easy editing.
Well, to get to my system they need to enter a password, and if they are using premiere, it will occasionally ask them to locate the first clip. If for some reason the connection goes down (ethernet) because some dubmass unplugged my router or something like that all the clips go black. Similarly if they can't find their original clip, they are screwed.
One my students apparently missed out when I told them what to do it this happens. So he opens a project that he's been working on for 6 weeks in his free time, sees the black clips, and firgures the whole thing is corrupted, and delets his entire project, including the bumpers and title cards.
Now thats harsh.

tough guys and stupefacient days
2003-09-02 00:13:20
God I am so tired after this weekend.
I had to get up at 6am saturday to help with a garage sale (made 560 bucks) and haul out all this heavy stuff, granite counter, bricks, desks and so forth. Then later on that night I had to work a concert. For those who don't know me, I do concert security on the side. I'm a field supervisor so usually I'm given a large crew and an area of the venue to maintain, such as searches, or the field during a football game. This time I had the artists entrance and the backstage area at the Hollywood Palladium. I hate backstage stuff. Sure you get to see famous people... but so what, I mean its not like we're gonna party together or anything. Usually the concerts at the palladium end at 10-11 or so but not this one. It ends at 1:30 am (I got up at six remember?) Since I'm securing the backstage I can't leave untill all the singers are out of the building.
It's almost over and some guy falls down on the stairs outside of my area. He falls about four feet onto cement stairs, slamming his face right into the stairs and tumbles down the rest. By the time I get to him there is blood all over the place. This is an older guy too, probably abut 50 or so. I'm thinking, ambulance and so forth but NOooo he just washes up, puts some bandaids on his broken nose and goes home. CRIPES! I see alot of people get messed up at concerts like Ozzffest, and Mettalica but this guy just put most of them to shame.
I didn't get home till about 3:30 am.
Then I had to get up and start the whole moving stuff out to the sale again at six am... 2 and a half hours of sleep.
I have a black flag concert coming up. I've asked for the response team on this one. last time I was at a hardcore concert I had 15 ejections easy. I actually prefer working the pit and catching the moshers but that can be a mixed bag depending on how good the concert is. I mean, I've worked the pit at Korn concert and had like, two people come over. I've worked the pit at slipknot and nearly got buried they were coming over so fast.
Since I'm on the subject you know what I hate. I hate when I get people stuff at a concert and they never come get it. I got backstage passes and pit tickets for some girls that wouldn't leave me alone at the Ozzfest and wound up just giving them to some random person because they never showed up.

jin roh, 2pac and madonna ballz
2003-08-14 01:54:26
God I hate Jin Roh.
Out of the whole mostly boring movie there is possibly two minutes worth of footage of what I want. I got tired of the huge huff files sitting on my system so I killed them. Wouldn't you know, the next day I need something in one of those files.
My premiere class is going well. All my students are getting the hang of using multiple video tracks, and banding the audio to match the tempo of the video. I'm so tired of hearing their 2-pac stuff though. Two of them are using 2-pac, and the other two are using linkin park. Yes.. they are doing dragon ballz videos. I'll say this: at least the two are easy to match up. You couldn't do say a madonna ballz video, wait... that came out wrong.
Handed out two SVCDs of completed projects in class today..
