The server rental cost was per month, not per year. Which makes more sense. So unless someone sorts out collective hosting at colo.fm for $10 per month per person, then that's it, except for #animeheaven on DALnet. I heard from a friend that my videos have turned up there...
As a result, I've deleted all the links to downloads, to save people tearing their hair out over 403 Forbidden.
KareKano disc 3 finally ripped into MJPEG. Now disc 5... I *will* get there...

"How much for 360GB/year?"
2002-03-04 20:20:46
Not as much as I thought, if I'm reading this right... the videos I had hosted in Catz are going to be taken down so that nobody asks awkward questions (the other 25% of the traffic are entirely legit mp3s) so now I'm looking for hosting, and someone to help spread the cost of renting a server.
*sigh*
Quiet Lies proceeds, or will do once I finish grabbing XEmacs for Win32 so that, while kaworu is recompressing, I can work on the fanfic...

Extreme wibbliness
2002-03-04 05:31:21
Watched all of Invader Zim the other night. That, combined with an AMLA thread about the politics of fanfic critique, left me googling for KareKano yaoi fanfic. An interestingly quiet fandom: the one fanfic ML I found hasn't had anything posted for ages, and the membership is only 47. Including me. I also found precisely ONE yaoi fic, which can be found here (if you care): http://joyce.jteers.net/fanfiction/kkindex.html
Plus I've started writing one. It's been far too long since entirely failing to finish the Tenchi fic "Consequences". (A Tenchi fic that had yaoi in it. Yes, such things *are* possible...)
The 16 hours work each disc of KareKano and the immobility of the Firewire case has meant I still haven't recompressed disc three. Ah well. I need to rewatch stuff from disc 2 to check continuity demands for Quiet Lies (the fanfic above) as well, so it'll be pushed back a bit.
Scariness: my mother's selling the house and is coming out to see me in a month's time. She's coming for the sakura, too...

Avery Lee Was Right

Small elements do not make for good compression, I discover when trying to
get a reasonable DivX of Apocalypse Delivery Service.
Also, I should have exported the thing into HuffYUV and encoded that rather
than re-encoding into MJPEG. No compounding of compression artifacts
or ringing around the edges of text...
KareKano ripping proceeds slowly - 16 hours recompression per DVD, and
the video footage is absolutely *pathological*. Entirely seriously I sent
off an email to Home Theatre and Hifi magazine suggesting they include
the Japanese disc 1 as a torture test for the next time they do a round-up
of progressive players. If a player can convert *that* into progressive
video it can convert *anything*. Foul cadence, no apparent flags, jitter...
yeuch.

"Can you tell what it is yet?"
2002-02-20 08:45:31
My subconscious appears to do interesting things when I'm not watching. It became apparent, when I had around 15 seconds still to do on Apocalypse Delivery Service, that I'd done something completely unexpected.
I'd ended up turning Kiki into a yuri coming-of-age videofic.
It works too. I think. Outside opinion will be sought.
Finished tweaking the lyrics for the subtitles; now it's just to get a clean resize (I need to letterbox the thing but Premiere 6's resizing code appears to be shite when scaling up) so that it's letterboxed, and add the subs. Then stir-fry and serve on top of rice with further soy sauce to taste.
