JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Releasing a new AMV is a lot of work (on a 56k modem, no less) 2008-09-28 20:44:09 Credits: Done. NICE...but weird (go figure).

Intro: Not done. There's something I need to get in my AMV proper, but if I put it first (in the intro) I'm worried it's going to spoil things. But I can't put it at the end, because it doesn't work with the credits, even though that's where it really belongs.

Announcement "poster": Sort of done. I've got two, but I have no idea which I'll use, or whether either will be used. One cost me $4. -_-

Banner: Done. Surprisingly, that was the easy part. Now I've got to make a banner for MSAMAMV, though, because my sig is going to look really unbalanced, otherwise.

Worst part about all this is that I'm trying to do it via a dinky modem. If anyone sees my sig going through all kinds of contortions in another week or two, it's because I'm trying to get the code straightened out in slow motion. It feels like the time I once impersonated myself (somewhere else) on a forum, carrying out a heated argument between myself and my fake self, along with two other people who were also in on it. Eventually I screwed up a post because my modem couldn't keep up and the whole escapade collapsed. Fun times while it lasted, though! It's amazing how many geeks will flock to a topic called "Hey, this seems like a good place to pick up guys."
  • "Overdrift" keeps coming up on YouTube now, thanks a lot. 2008-09-27 19:49:24 "Go watch drift's video, it takes YET ANOTHER source not fit for AMVing and makes it for fun times. "

Heywhaa?? Takeout? What's not fit for AMVing? My music? My anime? My concept? (ok to concept, what the hell MC for the others!) LOL wait until AFTER I release it to say that!! Right now people have three videos to choose from when it comes to "Go watch drift's video" (which makes it sound like I've made one AMV, what the hell?). Wait, are you saying Ghostbusters, Relax and That's All aren't fit for AMVs? BLASPHEMY!!

MC: If you want to get plastered, go buy yourself a $40 bottle of Cointreau (sp). I can drink about half a bottle before I must rush (aka stagger on the verge of falling) to the washroom and then suffer a colossal hangover for the next 24 hours. Also, you must drink half the bottle within 15 minutes, or you just don't get the same effect. If you're on a budget and/or don't like orange liqueur, drinking half a bottle of cheap vodka within an hour and a half also works, though interestingly it's not as killer as the more expensive stuff (at least in my case).

But wait, MC!! Don't go get plastered!! It's not worth it!! (so says she who just drank three glasses of wine on an empty stomach). :|

Oh yeah!! And my AMV.org t-shirt is officially in the works! Hopefully I'll have it in about two weeks. I had to compromise on the design a little - I like the front more than the back - but I really don't know for certain until I get it. If it comes out nicely I'll have to post some pics. Maybe get someone at AAC to get a pic of me or something....oh but I can't, my camera is dead!! ARGH!
  • All things considered, a spider problem is far preferable to a rat-, flea-, mouse- or cockroach-problem 2008-09-25 12:24:04 Spider count: 4 It seems they’ve started to move inside for the winter. One got in my gym bag overnight and jumped out on my bed this morning (dog eventually ate it), another one’s still up in the corner of the kitchen, a third was wandering around in the pantry (got away from the dog) and a fourth climbed into my purse and crawled out onto the passenger seat of my car on the way to work, necessitating that I pull over and confine him/her in a jar before he/she got any further. There seem to be two types of spiders – the big, garden variety and a smaller, beefier type. It's a good thing I'm not hyper-squeemish about spiders.

I may upload Takeout next weekend-ish or, if I get my act together, next week. I got a little too excited about my grand plans for the credits and – when I sat down to actually consider how to implement them - realized it’s probably not a good idea to make your credits more interesting and technically superior to your entire AMV (nevermind one-quarter of the AMV’s length). This is a short, simple, straightforward AMV, I need short, simple, straightforward credits. I’m already going to be fighting to hold people’s attention for one minute and thirty seconds so they can get to the ending, it’s probably not wise to drag the experience out anymore. I don’t plan on making too many apologies for that, either, this AMV was made for its ending, everything that comes before is just window dressing. So…that said, the credits are mostly done and hopefully will be a little amusing in and of themselves. No intro yet. No banner yet. No announcement poster yet. I may have to pursue further chopstick photography (except I can’t…because my camera died last week – what kind of sorry graphic designer am I if I don’t even have a camera?? I can’t AFFORD a new camera!! I need a laptop, I need a camera, I need CS4, I need a bigger paycheck!).

The other day I changed the info on MSAMAMV because I suspected my giant “DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS AMV” line of text was responsible for lots of people looking but almost no one downloading. Nice job, Lauren. That video of mine is just a running string of *facepalm* action, any way you slice it. -_-

  • isn't it amazing how quickly I fall back into journal posting 2008-09-22 15:20:26 I need to stop making AMVs set to songs I really enjoy. "Takeout" is the saddest so far, I took my #1 favorite piece of orchestral music (a 20+ year love affair) and made a mockery of it. :( I don't know why it took me so long to get depressed about this.

MPEG-2ization went ok, if that's the term for spending three hours fighting to make it come out "ok", and me still not sure it actually worked. I'll find out when it gets rejected from competition for not following the submission requirements. Same problem as last time - massive color shift and squish, my red text is ruined - except THIS time my footage was becoming displeasingly washed out (no idea why), so the color shift actually rescued me from a bad situation. Of course, this means I can't take any blame/credit for the overall appearance of my footage, either, since there's nothing I can do to affect the outcome.

I may be able to release this sooner than Oct. 20. I have no clue what kind of reception "Takeout" is going to get. I'm actually a little fearful of premiering it at a con while I'm sitting in the room, because if I hear dead silence or a lot of disinterested chit chat going on I'm going to be quite embarrassed. When you've been staring at your own attempts at humor for upwards of four months, though (and been pondering it for four+ years) things tend to lose their appeal.

Also, I think my cold or whatever it is is getting worse. Now I've got a sore throat. Lovely - just in time to help people move all over the New England the next few weekends. Yay.
  • It's done...ish 2008-09-21 18:29:31 Phew, that's four AMVs down. Today was spent frantically fixing up all kinds of "Aagghh!! I can't believe I missed that!" problems, plus fighting tooth and nail with VDM about prepping for a con. I HATE working with AVS scripts. Few things are more frustrating than finally finishing an AMV and discovering your encoding efforts are completely foiled at every turn.

*gulp* Time to try and make an MPEG-2. I've never attempted it with this PC, and with my luck some nasty Vista-related glitch is going to pop up that I can do absolutely nothing about. I don't even know if it's going to mess up my final product like it did last time, either. :(

And thumbing my nose at whomever it is I'm thumbing my nose at, I reserved a room for AAC today. They said I can cancel until Oct. 16, so if more car bills start piling up or whatever, then I can still back out of attending without losing my money. I hope I have a good time.
