Takeout: Redux Ridiculousness
2009-03-05 10:25:28
Post-edit: 6 hours
The Good: Nada.
The Bad: See below.
The Ugly: Attempting to encode Takeout for con submission is failure after failure. Filters aren't working. Resize isn't working. TMPGEnc isn't working. IT'S JUST NOT WORKING:
- Why are my post-processed/filtered AVI files only showing up nice and pretty in VDM, nothing else?
- Why - despite direct stream copying - is my filtered file coming out less than half the size (file-size wise) than the original, uncompressed version exported from Premiere?
- Why is there a jerk in the video that only shows up after post-processing, and that looks like interlacing (but is not)?
- Why does TMPGEnc persist in saying the file is 704x480, when it's 740x480??
- Why does my video STILL undergo a hue shift after MPEG-2ization? It's not as noticeable/bad as with 'Bustin, but that's only because the shift makes up for the filters not making the footage as vibrant as it should be, so it's actually kind of a good thing.
- WHY MUST EVERY ELEMENT OF THE UNIVERSE BE SO TOTALLY AGAINST ME MAKING AMVS???
I was in the middle of discussing/ranting/raving about the injustice of the situation when moi's significant other said "But you really love it, right?" (meaning making AMVs). I fired back - with absolutely no hesitation - "No, I HATE it!" and that's the god's honest truth right there.
Can I nominate myself for Most Stubborn Editor of the Year? hmm, no suggesting categories this year...drat.

The pitfalls of being honest
2009-03-04 13:00:22
This match.com debacle has - for the moment - risen above debacle level to something interesting. I met a guy who, in many ways, is fortunately/unfortunately just like me and we've been out a few times. He's coming over Friday so I can inflict him with one of my favorite movies and find out if he wants nothing more to do with me after that experience. I'm sorry, but I do love my Mean Guns.
In any case, he's now thinking of dropping in at Anime Boston, which led to an offhand comment (by me) about late-night, adult-only activities (and I use the term "adult" loosely) such as the uber-disturbing hentai dubbing sessions that sometimes go on and how I get a kick out of dragging unsuspecting innocents to them.
Insert image of ears perking up even though I couldn't see them.
In retrospect this was not a wise move. Most guys seem to find the idea of girls talking about porn of any kind fascinating, and when it's your de facto girlfriend who's just told you she might escort you to a hentai panel, well...yeah, whoops. Sure enough, he brought it up in conversation mere days later, which suggests the subject is still hovering at the top of the brain. My casual and wholly honest response was that if you're a big anime fan, it's pretty much guaranteed that you're going to watch some hentai along the way. I don't own any, I don't seek it out and I always feel slightly ill at "adult only" events at cons. Not sure if that burst any bubbles, but that's just the way it is.
*sigh* Still...I must resist the urge to make the most fantastic hentai AMV ever...it would be so awesome, but I don't know if I could survive making it. I suppose someone else could already have made it, but I certainly am not going to try and find out!
And John, if you're reading this, yes I called myself your defacto girlfriend and no I will not discuss this X-rated AMV concept with you! :P

Are some people boycotting the VCAs this year or something? I was all ready to nominate their videos/them...but ... they're not there. :(
Yes, that's right, I'm looking at you and you and you!!

Hey!

What part of "I am saved!" references selling myself to the devil? :|
Besides, I'd never sell my soul for a $34/month slow DSL line. Cable maybe, but not DSL.

I am saved?

A casual phone call to the local phone company - which recently took over this territory and made all kinds of crazy promises about bringing Vermont into the 21st century, at least in terms of high-speed Internet (though DSL is not what I'D call high speed, but whatever) may have produced my salvation from dial-up. TWO YEARS stuck on a 56.6K modem and what happens? I jump at the chance to pay $34 a month for a measly 3Mb/s connection.
Still, if this works (previous phone company assured me it would, but it never did, so I'm justifiably skeptical), then I'll have my new, fast(er) connection just in time for the VCA Semifinals, allowing me to actually view as many videos as I wish before voting. Yay!
And if this works, now I can send betas to people without using the Tube. Yay!
And I can use my IM anytime I want. Yay!
And...and...I can reformat my HD without worrying about the hideous task of attempting to re-download all my software updates on dial-up (which is just about impossible). Yeeaaay!
And if this DOESN'T work, I'm going to be very upset.
