JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Yeah, that's about it for me. 2009-04-09 12:28:41 Just discovered that - thanks to my company cracking down on Internet usage - I can't download AMVs anymore. I can get ON this site, which is somewhat surprising, but I can't download FROM it.

*yells at phone company* WHERE IS THE DSL YOU PROMISED ME A MONTH AND A HALF AGO?? *gets on the phone*

  • The rumors persist! 2009-04-06 20:14:21 "I’ll let DriftRoot explain to you why he made this AMV using scenes from the overused CG film Advent Children."

    I am not a guy!!

And then, right off the bat, I get "holy crap... ummm did you get laid for this project? because you should"

The thing is, that's not the first time someone's said the exact same thing to me. Is that what AMV editors of the male persuasion are trying to do? Make something so awesome that they get laid for it? Is that the secret pinnacle of AMV editor fame? Huh. I'd personally rather get a slice of cheesecake or something, but whatever.

Also, does this bother anyone else? Someone leaves you a QC along the lines of "the file won't play at all on my computer" but no nick, which means you can't possibly help them figure out how to resolve the situation. I just want to help. :|
  • You've got to have a plan 2009-04-05 10:11:51 I like to brainstorm in writing (as if this wasn't already obvious).
Current issue: How to finish another AMV.

Since I don't have any AMV deadlines to shoot for, until possibly next year, the likeliehood of my completing another AMV in 2009 is very close to nil. I've also sort of got a lot going on right now, which means a lack of the hundreds of hours of bulk free time necessary to complete a video.

I'm also sort of at a loss for what direction to take. There are videos I would like to make that I don't have the skills to make and there are others I certainly could make which just don't seem worth sinking all that time and effort into. This is what this whole AMV editing business really comes down to, for me - the question of whether the end result justifies months of laborious work and dozens of wrathful journal entries throughout the entire process. So far I haven't made anything that, at the end of the day, I felt was completely unworthy of the work I put into it. Takeout is close, but I consider finishing that video a pretty good "win" simply because I completed it in spite of dragging my feet the whole way. Still, it is an issue, because I'm not very impressed by the video I've been working on lately. Seems sort of like a rehash of some other well-known videos and thus far I haven't been able to give it enough of a twist to be termed truly original - something I care very much about.

So, to sum up: I think I might be done making AMVs. lol

Also, yay - this year I might be able to attend the AMV dinner at Anime Boston! I've only been unable to go for all sorts of reasons for what...four years now? Five? Hopefully I'll get to meet some folks there I haven't met, yet, which would be a lot of folks. ^_^
  • Wow x 3 (and this time it's like...heh???) 2009-03-25 20:28:27 Best Comedy Video

    DriftRoot - Takeout
    Judges comments:
    - Clever and funny. Really does the alternate-story thing well, even if it is kind of disturbing.
    - A funny video with a lots of “hidden messages” edited in the backgrounds of the frames. It achieves to be funny by creating a funny story itself, instead of relying on “funny audio”.

I don't really quite understand how these things happen. I myself do not find my own video anywhere near the comedic level of 'Bustin (nor, it seems, do most people) and yet there's Takeout getting the JCA for Best Comedy. You people are weird. That said, it still has quite made my day.

Thanks again to everyone who gave the nod to my videos this year. It's been quite a crazy 12 months (the VCAs/JCAs wrapped up exactly a year I achieved my lofty goal of being part of the Anime Boston AMV competition - winning an award at it never really crossed my mind) with a lot of ups and downs...but everything seems to have balanced out in the end.

oh and LOOK there's little HTML code buttons in my journal now! :) :D
  • Phase 2, complete 2009-03-19 10:35:59 Phase 1 - Encode video for con submission
Phase 2 - Officially enter AMV competition
Phase 3 - Achieve finalist status
Phase 4 - Survive long enough to get to con and/or enjoy con without suffering illness and/or injury which ruins the entire experience
    Phase 5 - Aftermath

For the record, I occasionally feel physically sick at the thought of seeing Takeout in person at an AMV competition. I know some people get it and some don't, and I know some people think it's hilarious and some don't, but up until the VCAs I had no idea it a) was leading people to think I'm a homicidal maniac, b) ruining people's day or c) inspiring sentiments like "Someone needs to take Drift's editing programs away before she inflicts any more AMVs upon the world."
