JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Why am I suddenly making all these journal posts? 2009-06-12 19:40:53 I'm getting stressed out, that's why.

Today I made another effort to do this social media...stuff...that my dial-up connection has pretty much barred me from for several years. It's still going to take me a looong time to catch up (if I ever do), but since I don't like this feeling of being out of the loop Internet-wise, I am making an effort. Today was "Put Some Affort Into My Facebook Profile" day. I still find that site's setup somewhat aggravating and excessively slow. I mean, OK I now have DSL, but that site still drags its feet and (on the surface) there's not a lot to it...so come on already.

One thing that's bugging me (do I come across as someone who's easily aggravated? I fear I'm becoming more and more intolerant and impatient the older I get) is that many of the people I'd love to track down or otherwise be able to be tracked down BY would have a hard time finding me via Facebook etc. That and the people who could track me down aren't ON Facebook etc., even though those are the people I also really want to stay in touch with. :|
  • Technical difficulties... 2009-06-10 21:23:55 I've often said that I run into an astounding number of computer-related problems, so many, in fact, that I once had our office IT person tell me I probably am emitting some kind of weird, computer-disrupting field. My usual defense is that when you spend as much time on computers as I do, the likelihood of having problems logically increases.

One thing I perpetually suffer from is graphic card plague. I have owned only ONE card in my life that did not at some point die an ugly death, and that card I can no longer use b/c it's an old AGP model. *mutter* My cards also tend to succumb to my bad influence after approximately one year, also known as my-warranty-ran-out-itis. So, right on schedule, about 14 months after purchase, my "new" card has begun making unpleasant grinding noises. And I really, really, really hate graphics card shopping. Like, really really hate it. I'd rather make an AMV than figure out what new card to get...and that's just about as bad as it gets.
  • -_- / I knew match.com was a bad thing 2009-06-09 20:45:26 I personally find it not only unnecessary but also rather rude to come down hard on someone who has won an award at an AMV convention simply because you feel said honors were not deserved. First of all, unless you've seen every other video in the competition, who are you to say what deserved what? In fact, if there is anything to complain about, shouldn't you be complaining to the judges who MADE the decision? Second, if this editor is not being outrageously egotistical about their award and, in fact, is simply stating their winning it as a fact, how is ridiculing them/their AMV for the honor they received in any way a) constructive criticism, b) fair or c) necessary?

In other news, since it's come up before I might as well pen the conclusion:
This whole match.com X-mas present debacle has wound up pretty much as I anticipated, namely me happily single again. I've learned several things from this experience, but first and foremost that it is - simply on basic principle - a very bad idea to throw someone who's not really interested in pursuing relationships simply for the sake of having relationships in the deep end of the pool with a whole bunch of people who are so desperate to do exactly that they're paying for a crack at it.

So yes, I'm on the SWF Seeking Decent Normal Guy Who Also Can Deal With Anime Hobby Etc. schtick again. One thing I did notice, however, was that I had more guys hit on me during the time I officially was someone's girlfriend than I did during the entire period of time preceding when I was officially available. What's up with that?

Also, my toe hurts. This is because it's a very bad thing to accidentally ram your toe, in an open-toe sandal, into the iron spike holding together railroad ties. Great way to start the summer sandal season...great incentive to paint one's toenails.

A number of AMV concepts vying for my attention, just like they have been for years. I'm rather bleh about each and every one at some level, though. Musical choices are as follows:
    Mitternacht
    Believer
    9 to 5
    Requiem for a Dream
    Addicted to Love
    Bad
    Here We Go Again
    Footloose
    Beat It
    Mack the Knife
    Mortal Kombat
    Moonlight Shadow
    Black Water
    Wake Me Up
    +about five other songs

Clearly a case of far too many ideas, far too little time. If I were to make all these videos, assuming I even could, at my current rate of progress (which in 2009 is probably negative progress) it would take me at LEAST seven years. It also should be fairly obvious from this list that I have a thing for 80's music. :|
  • No word yet. 2009-06-01 19:40:00 Job hunting is a terrible way to spend one's time...when it doesn't pay off. If I was someone looking for a new employee, I would have the courtesy to at least contact those who submitted their resume to acknowledge receipt of it. I also would be cautious about Googling folks, since it IS possible for two people to have the same name. For example, anyone who Googles me will discover someone with my name was arrested at age 22 for criminal activity...which I certainly was not!! *SIGH*

However, I finally got one letter I've been eagerly anticipating: the one that says my student loan is paid off in full. I wish I knew how much interest I've saved myself from paying by taking only three years to pay the wretched thing off instead of 15. This would be the student loan for a certificate program, which cost me far more than an entire four years of college in terms of how much money I had to lay down to get a piece of paper. I definitely feel like I was ripped off.

I've also noted, via job hunting, a disturbingly high number of graphic design contract positions and internships. The former...ok, fine, bait for freelancers. The latter...well, it's quite obvious just by the sheer number that employers have discovered a way to tap into a major source of free labor. I've got too much experience to be an intern and not enough to be a freelancer. ARGH!!
  • *paces* 2009-05-29 19:47:41 Applied for a new job today. By e-mail. Requested a read receipt. Heard nothing.

Please god let me have found the correct HR manager on Linked In. :|

In AMV news, if you thought Takeout was funny, get a load of what happens when I bow to blabbler's demand for a condensed version, because the original was apparently way too long for his tastes. For a limited time only... http://www.sendspace.com/file/ig87ue
