  • AMV Hell 5 Update 2009-12-13 17:06:44 Concept statements have been sent. Now I wait. And scheme. And try to get Premiere working.

So You Want to Be a Voice Actor?
I'm putting out a very preliminary call for folks who might be interested in one-liner voice-over work for one of my AMV Hell clips (contingent upon it being accepted, of course). I know there's some good voices around here, hopefully someone would be willing to help out. The ability to pull off a good Southern accent and familiarity with Jeff Foxworthy jokes is a huge plus. :)
  • What's Next is True Fiction 2009-12-11 18:57:10 In my case, as one of my AMV titles can attest, life is weirder than a cheap mass market paperback.

After months and months of applying to dozens and dozens of jobs without anyone even calling to request an interview, I get TWO interview requests within the past two days, one for a position 30 minutes away, the other for a position 30 minutes away from where I grew up, a.k.a. the place I've been trying to get back TO for the past ... erm... 17 years? 17 YEARS?? What the heck??! Last time I checked it was 12 years! This is one reason I need to get back there, it's completely unacceptable that I still identify with that place so strongly that I'm oblivious to the fact that I've NOT lived there far longer than I ever lived there. Of course, it's not the same anymore, either, which is a real bummer.

But still. This is all weird and I can absolutely guarantee it's going to get weirder, because that's just the way my life works. I hesitate to speculate, because my speculation has a proven track record of coming true in bizarre ways. It's nice to be wanted, though. Most would say I took a huge wrong turn back around age 18 and am going to wind up paying for it for the rest of my life. It's ridiculous that this wrong turn entailed graduating at the top of my college class instead of getting saddled with a criminal record.

People: unless you a) don't care, b) know what you're doing, do NOT pursue a degree in history. Yes yes, I know...youthful optimism and rebellion and all that is well and good and I am a fine example of how you can get by in the world with such a degree without actually utilizing it in any meaningful way...BUT...don't do it! Get an English degree instead, if you must (though I don't recommend it).

In AMV News: I have not even attempted to work on Bacon Bits since the CS4 fiasco. I subconsciously am petrified of troubleshooting my damaged DoC footage, too, which doesn't help.

In Anime News: My 2-cents once again made the cut at ANN. I think I hold the record for the most exclusive Answerman rants published...possibly the record for the most Answerman column submissions published, period. Not sure...I'm not interested in keeping track. Heh.
  • Let's do this right 2009-12-06 20:30:48 Title: ? AMV Hell 5 Entry - a.k.a. Bacon Bits (I just made that up, right now, but I love it. This is why I enjoy my AMV journal, it gives me all kinds of inspiration sometimes.)
Pre-edit: In a perfect world, 1 hour. My world is far from perfect, so this is more like 10 hours. That is 10 hours for ...oh...1 minute or so of footage. Yeah.
Edit: 2 hours, this was back in 2007 mind you, so the exact time stamp may be a little different. How long are AMV Hell entries? Not less than 30 seconds? Ok, I predict I will spend at least 20 hours on a 30-second AMV Hell entry which won't even make the cut.

The Good: I remembered today that I was all excited a little while back about AMV Hell 5. Not sure how this slipped my mind, maybe something to do with losing my job, getting my fractured ankle fixed, grandmother having a stroke, car falling apart...

The Bad: The lingering dilemma of WTF is wrong with my Dirge of Cerberus footage did not long prevent me from saying to myself "Well, I have the old protoype, so there's nothing stopping me from throwing THAT into Premiere and playing around with it, just to get this thing started." If I do not start, it's a sure thing I will never finish.

    The Ugly:

    *clicks on Premiere CS4 icon*

    ....

hrm.... *clicks on Premiere CS4 icon*

    *screen flickers*

*new window opens: Premiere Pro Debug Event "Premiere Pro has encountered an error. [....SrcImporterProcessClient.cpp-127]" Continue*

    *clicks Continue*

    *Premiere disappears*

    :|

    *repeat and rinse three times*

    :

*downloads hideously large CS4 software update and runs program*

    *"Update Failed"*

    :(

    WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS?!
  • Ah ha! 2009-12-03 22:01:36 AMVing has led me to a certain appreciation of video editing I probably wouldn't have otherwise possessed. What I just saw on TV is a perfect example: the barroom brawl scene from PoTC: Dead Man's Chest. I'm sitting here, staring at it, realizing for the first time that the whole thing is being desperately synced to the music (or vice versa, depending on how you want to consider the matter), in much the same way many AMV editors sit around desperately trying to sync AMVs.

*deletes unnecessary commentary about sync and AMVs*

Third, it brings up an interesting possibility regarding the evolution of AMVs. The status quo pretty much demands we take existing audio and add our own blend of anime to it. Will this hobby ever arrive at a place where the hot new thing to do is FIRST construct the "A" and "V" parts of your video, then create the music for it (either yourself or someone else)? While the argument can certainly be made that creating music is on a whole different level than creating visuals, it is a direction with plenty of room for AMVs to grow in.

I would like to see that...a silent AMV. I preview my videos silently at some point, usually when they're close to being done. I find it really helps identify weak spots when you're not distracted by the music. Of course, by that time I've got the song stuck in my head anyways, so I'm not sure how much good it does. -_-
  • Awwww, I feel like I finally belong: 2009-12-02 10:06:33 Hello i was just wondering if it would be possible for you to recommend a good place where i can download HD episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Unless you bought them and then uploaded them to your computer, i'm considering that option as i know it is probably the best way, but it would be alot faster to download them but i'm a but unsure of where i can find them.
Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

So let me get this straight. This person has spent how much time trying to find HD MOHS to download, because buying the DVDs (or, my solution, renting them from Netflix) is too slow?

Heh? Is MOHS even available in HD? I certainly didn't use HD for my video...even though they seem to think I did. Good grief...are people like this so used to seeing downloaded video footage in AMVs that they think DVD rips are HD?!

I knew the younger generation is of the "I want it NOW" mindset, but I didn't realize it was that "NOW!" No wonder the anime industry imploded - I cannot imagine this person waiting a year or more for a series to be released here so they can watch it. Why wait when you can run out and download a fansub right NOW? I like marathoning my anime, so the fansub scene actually kind of grates on me. I want the whole series NOW. :)

Takeout fallout: Had my post-op on Monday and got put into an AirCast. This was unexpected, as I was told there would be a 10-day recovery period and am now looking at another two weeks in a cast, on crutches. Also was told I can't drive for two weeks (which is unacceptable), which of course means I can't go to work for two weeks. I got the doctor to agree to sign off on my fitness to return to work if I was able to stomp on the brake pedal by this Friday, however. Funny thing is, he never mentioned the no-driving bit until I asked him. Sounds like a liability issue to me - "Whoops, I never told her she couldn't drive so I'm not responsible for the accident she got into when her ankle gave out attempting to hit the brakes."
