  • Underage drinking alert 2010-05-09 14:28:48 It just doesn't seem right that Soul Eater streaming vids on Funimation's site are accompanied by commercials for Malibu rum. I'd be mad if I was a parent and my kid was being exposed to that stuff.

    Also: XII tally ho!!
  • Attack of the Southern Comfort 2010-05-05 21:29:31 Question: Does the music we listen to define the AMVs we make?

Answer: In my case, yes. I'm an old fogey, by anime standards. I grew up listening to music from the 60's, 70's and 80's and it's STILL the music I predominantly enjoy. I just don't tune in to new music that often and, when I do, it winds up being non-mainstream stuff like British folk music in the form of the Unthanks. Since it's music that normally inspires my AMVs, this means that I'm stuck in somewhat of a perpetual rut. I have this large, outdated library of music in my head, and unless something perfectly happens to synch up with it, I'm out of luck. :|

Witness An American in Paris. That is a fantastic soundtrack I enjoy listening to while working on...work. I would love to make an AMV using it, but until a series came along that let me, I wouldn't touch it. This is what happened with Takeout - I sat on that concept for years before MOHS trotted itself out, and THAT was a byproduct of my ancient 1990's commercial memories.

I kind of want one of those Kindle things. I read a lot, and it bugs me to no end when I finish one book in a series and don't immediately have the next on hand to suck dry. But I already stare at a computer screen at least 10-12 hours a day, and spending more time digitizing my life is not an attractive option. Hence my lack of AMV progress.

Also: I've begun trying to subvert my co-worker's children by introducing them to RPGs (Kingdom Hearts) and cheering on their affinity for Avatar: The Last Airbender in hopes that it will lead them down the path of anime. I don't know if this makes me a bad person. I see it sort of like procreation - I'm one fan, and if I can replace myself with at least one fan of equal enthusiasm, then I've succeeded in perpetuating the North American otaku species.
  • *waits* 2010-04-29 20:29:56 I am awaiting instructions on where to send my AMV Hell 5 clip. June 1? Great, gives me another month to almost forget to submit it.

Meanwhile I haven't touched anything AMV related for well over a month. Been a tad bit busy, not to mention sick to death of slaving over a computer 24/7. Why must humankind keep inventing new pastimes that involve sedentary "activity?" I've got a bridesmaid dress to squeeze into by June 11 and at least four more pounds to go before I squeeze comfortably!

    TMI...I know...I know...

Actually, one thing that's really to blame is this season of new anime. There's actually *counts* NINE shows I'm attempting to keep up with, which I haven't found myself doing for years and years. No huge favorites so far, nothing's hitting it out of the park for me, but I am rooting heavily for Hakuoki to develop some kind of reason to watch it other than the pretty guys and for Angel Beats to keep its twisted comedy head above water.
  • It's like deja vu...only not 2010-04-10 19:40:51 I'm doing it again: faced with the choice of spending my Saturday afternoon a) working on an AMV, b) cleaning up the garage, c) reading a book I'm not very interested in...I did both b and c and now sit here, frivolously commenting on my lack of AMV progress when I SHOULD BE WORKING ON THE VIDEO.

I honestly don't know how you people do it, who just crank out great (and not so great) AMVs like you've got nothing else going on in the world. I've always said I'm bad at this stuff, but jeez... it's nothing short of a miracle I ever finished an AMV at all.
  • @mc 2010-04-09 18:59:20 Since you took my suggestion about Noein (albeit after awhile and possibly by coincidence), hopefully you'll trust my good taste again when I recommend Katanagatari. It's got a lot more to it than you might expect at first and definitely is the sort of anime you actually need to pay attention to - lots of dialogue, which right there should send up a red flag since it's got a heavy veneer of shonen action series to it.
