JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Downtime 2011-05-28 08:38:57 Haven't really gotten any more work done due to company visiting for the week. I did receive the final DVD in the mail for the series, however. It still startles me how far prices have fallen for anime. Back in 2005 this same DVD (2-disc set) would have cost me about $24. Now? $6!! Oh well, at least now my collection is complete. The plan is to rip and clip at least one more disk today.

A complaint about the UT compression format: it's very difficult to review one's clips when one's computer doesn't want to show thumbnails of the clips and can't play the video in most players. I rely on my computer's ability to preview and play clips a LOT when editing AMVs, because I don't like having to do all that in Premiere. Adobe Bridge is absolutely befuddled by this type of compression, which makes working in Bridge almost pointless and that's not what Bridge is for (pointless work). It's looking like I will either have to change my workflow or go back to using Lagarith.

Regarding my head examination, all came back fine, I'm not clinically off-my-rocker and the AMVs I make cannot be blamed on a slightly abnormal mind (I guess one could look at it this way...). My doctor now thinks I'm a hypochondriac, though. I am not. I've been right about 90% of the stuff I complain about, and just because they can't diagnose the other 10% doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

The Good: What can I say, when I get serious about editing, I get serious about editing. Back and neck and shoulder are screaming bloody murder at me, but so far I'm still alive. Best part about today's editing was that I found some promising scenes I never considered useful before. This bodes well for future clip harvesting.

The Bad: I managed to locate one of my old audio files which actually plays, however it sounds like it's not in stereo, for some reason. Tomorrow I will - maybe - drive into town and try to find a music store which a) still sells CDs and b) isn't going to make me pay a lot of money for one. Meanwhile, at least I have some music I can edit to. I still don't know why my other files became corrupted.

The Ugly: Some of my AVS filters aren't working, in that they aren't being shot down as missing or failing to have all the required components, but they just aren't activating. Hopefully I can deal with this later and just be content on a little cleanup now... At least three hours today was spent fighting with filters and codecs and things, which just goes to show that what progress I make is largely of the two steps forward, one step back variety.

Ok, there is some kind of tree frog outside which has been making little rainforest frog noises all day, and it's really starting to be not so cute anymore. I've got all the windows shut and I can STILL hear it, even though it's quite far away. Worse than crickets, I tell you...
  • More setbacks 2011-05-14 14:35:11 Seeing as how it's a dismal day outside, I came up with the great plan to get some serious editing hours in. As I should have been able to predict, it's been nothing but one problem after another ranging from corrupt project files to bad aspect ratios I thought I'd fixed. I also got mad at Cloud & Co. for being so very difficult, and as punishment for continually giving me a hard time, deleted all my footage and moved on to a very old AMV concept which still makes me smile. So, here we go because I want to do this right:

The Good: There is absolutely no reason why I can't make this video. It does not demand high-level technical wizardry, just a flair for the dramatic and a lot of humor. I can do that. What technicality is required I've either done before or need to learn, and hopefully I can learn to sync lipflap. I've synced (suncked?) worse. Hopefully folks who I know are good at it will be willing to lend a hand if I get stuck.

The Bad: In 2006 this probably would have been a pretty original video, if not a tad bit shocking in terms of the subject matter. Unfortunately, in just five years the fangirls and their yaoi paddles have saturated the market to such an extent that this AMV may be seen as nothing more than pandering to the squeeing masses. As I've said before, I've got nothing against pandering, but in this case it would aggravate me to have this AMV labeled as such, because that's not the intent it was born of. *SIGH* See this? I'm complaining about something which should be in the "Good" category.

The Ugly: Saiyuki is an old series and the animation is not naturally gorgeous like most series today. I am not skilled at cleaning stuff up, so I've got a lot of work to do to prettify things before I can even get to the "fun" part of editing. Hahaha, "fun" part.

This is getting to be a real joke, isn't it, my continual attempts to start videos and then not finish them? It's pretty par for the course, actually, so maybe it's not that funny. What's hilarious is that I ever made any AMVs at all.
  • Oopohhh YEAH!! 2011-05-06 19:48:48 AMV Gods are hatin' on me again! That means it's EDITIN' TIME!! My hoarded WAV files from many years ago go silent at random places. This is a new phenomenon, clearly the work of a higher power. What I need to figure out is if technical difficulties with a specific project mean it's got lots of potential. I mean, why would the AMV Gods bother messing with something that was doomed to failure? It just doesn't make SENSE!

That made no sense. But really, how is this even possible? Crap, I hope this doesn't mean my whole music library was corrupted during my reformat...

Oh yeah, and I'm being sent for neurological examinations and stuff. Science will finally weigh in on whether I am or am not certifiably nuts! Or at least a little messed up in the head. I'm fine with either, really, as long as they can figure out how to get things back to normal. Or rather, "normal."
  • I'm regressing 2011-05-05 21:09:45 The cost of sitting all day at a computer at work finally got to be too much for me. I transitioned back to a standing workstation this week, which last would have possibly been referenced here in 2007.

As an aside, someday I hope the .ORG makes it easier to backtrack through journal entries, because sometimes I wonder how far back mine goes. At least until 2005, I'd assume. Possibly earlier. I'm getting old. I don't remember these things. I also don't care very much, but it kind of annoys me that I used to use my journal to record ideas and things and it's really difficult to go back and dig them up.

Anyhooo...standing is not as easy as it used to be. Apparently I'm getting old. I also have a damaged ankle (damn you, Takeout) which is not taking kindly to eight hours of support duty. Some parts of me feel better, others are protesting loudly, so I'm not sure how long I can keep it up. *deletes excessive ranting about medical practitioners*

Ah, now that takes me back. :D
