AWA Pro deadline is in a month and three days.
Let's do this.
Crap. I'm going to miss the deadline. Again. And here I thought I had at least another day.
This is really too bad, since I can easily turn OCD about things, but not when I'm physically unable to sit at a computer for 80+ hours a week. Although technically I'm standing 40 of those hours thanks to my new standing workstation...hrm...nope. Can't do it.

I will be brief. Very brief.

Good/Bad/Ugly: Nothing kills my motivation for an AMV like ripping clips from an entire DVD worth of crappy episodes. I don't quite remember whether Saiyuki ever settled down in its latter episodes so that character models were consistent and things just...didn't look so darn godawful CHEAP. I realize this is one of the very first computer-animated series, but OMG...they treated a lot of it like traditional animation and took hackneyed shortcuts while - at the same time - adding in all kinds of canned effects of the sort most self-respecting AMV editors wouldn't touch with a 13.5' pole.
And yet, there is just something about Saiyuki that is completely different and...earnest. They might be cheesy effects, but someone put the effort into adding a rather noticeable stylistic flair to the series that they didn't have to. It may be cheesy, but it actually works and makes sense (most of the time). Too bad the same cannot be said for the filler episodes...
In other news, my PS3 had its first glitch this evening: froze up on me in the middle of AC: Brotherhood. I am hoping it was because I was playing it for about eight hours straight and it just got overheated, but still...makes me a tad bit nervous. If I can't use my PS3, I'm going to have to spend more time on this AMV tomorrow. :| Or wash my kitchen floor, probably the latter.

The Good: AVS script is working decently at correcting interlacing ugliness. I went back to using Lagarith due to aforementioned issues with UTvideo. Drift is much happier, now...
The Bad: My philosophy behind pursuing this video is that it's something that - back in the day - I used to show people the raw footage for and cause a lot of hilarity. Even my sister finds it a hoot, she being an anime abhorrist and AMV naysayer of the first order after a HD failure she insists was caused by downloading Takeout from this site (Takeout has done worse, so I suppose it's possible. Whoever would think an AMV could fracture someone's ankle??). Seems like I've got something, here, with PotA, but it's not a slam dunk, at least in my mind. Hrm...how to elevate PotA above the obvious...
The Ugly: I've learned the hard way that my AMVs are mostly made through happy accidents. The ones which aren't made are the victims of unhappy accidents, and Portrait of the Addict has always fallen firmly into this category. Eeee...

What can I say, it's what I do. *shrug*

"Very enjoyable. Give or take the ending *sniff*"
There is something about Takeout that seems to dredge up deep-rooted emotions some viewers have towards Asahina. This poor soul was unhappy at her demise. Others are thrilled to pieces she is...in pieces. Some are horrified, some are ROFLing all the way home. Still more find it just bizarre and don't get it at all. I just sit back and continue to be marvel at how my little experimental instrumental seems to really push some people's buttons.

The Good: I made some progress resolving the interlacing problem with Saiyuki.
The Bad: Of course, "some" progress means "some"thing still isn't working right. The AMVapp deals with the problem by detailing how to run the footage through two different scripts...which is aggravating but doable, I guess, if you're editing with AVS files. If you're not, I guess it means you have to cross your fingers, scrutinize every single clip you make and re-clipify if interlacing shows up. Bleh!
The Ugly: I get to re-rip two DVDs worth of footage. This could turn into a lot more as I discover, down the road, something wrong with my footage just like I did recently, but it's my own fault; I should have paid more attention to my clips.
I wish I had something better to do with my time than complain about making AMVs. -_-

Third time's a charm, when it comes to this site eating journal entries. The short, short version of the story is that the AMV Gods are super mad at me. My footage won't de-interlace properly and so, of course, I search the forums for a solution and, of course find MY OWN post from 2005 detailing the same horror show I'm currently dealing with and a statement that a) I'd found a solution after much agony and b) that I hadn't found a solution for other problems...
