JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Good grief. 2012-01-23 07:32:00 I feel like I should avoid even looking into the forums until the VCAs are over. Just from watching people's journal's, it sounds like things were getting rancorous in there. Not unusual this time of year, but if the only outcomes are bad feelings and no positive change, is all that rancor really worth it? It happens EVERY YEAR!

Much better to opine on high from one's journal *rolls eyes*. :)

I do like nominations from the standpoint of catching up with videos I've missed.
  • I'm getting so close, I can almost taste the credits 2012-01-22 08:55:41 The Kingdom of L.F.S.

NOW things are getting into serious fine-tuning, "I wonder what would happen if I," "Hmm, I really should see if I can use 3D effects in this" territory. Spent most of the time yesterday trying to gain some kind of control of cameras and lights. Anything 3D has always been a challenge, I just can't wrap my head around it.

Good news is that this left brain makes me very meta, which seems to be all the rage these days. L.F.S. could be considered a faux meta AMV, if not a highly successful one, and I've got a tad bit of worry that this is how it will be judged (and found lacking). It wasn't SUPPOSED to be meta...but I guess that's my failing for dropping the ball, conceptually.

Final thoughts of the day, before I head off for more work: this AMV is another example of me exploiting some graphic skills most other editors do not have, which means I'm doing special effects work. Unlike a lot of crazy AE editors, though, my effects exist to support the video, they are not the point of the video. If I could make this thing without the effects, believe me I would! My concepts always seem to be too extreme to pull off without extra stuff, though... -_-
  • Redline's out, go get it! 2012-01-17 21:32:23 I'd say Advent Children was the last time I was extremely taken by any "anime" (and I count that only because I could care less that it's based on a game I never managed to play). It's been said before by better folks than me, but Redline is a perfect example of why I got into anime ... eek...15 years ago? Wait, it's worse than that. No, actually, that's just right.

Anyways. If you haven't watched it, watch it. If you haven't bought it, seriously consider buying it. Only $19.99 for the Blu-ray on Amazon right now! http://goo.gl/GJdKO

ANN review is here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/redline/blu-ray if you don't want to take my word for it. I don't believe it's the greatest anime thing ever created, but it is a fantastic example of what anime can be when it's firing on all cylinders. Pun intended.
  • I don't have to squint to see the light at the end of the tunnel, anymore 2012-01-14 18:56:26 The Kingdom of L.F.S.

So much blood and gore! Not really. Just more than actually exists in the original footage. I wish I could put more in, actually, since Knights of Badassdom is looking to be fairly gruesome, but I suspect there's only so far I can push this thing. Plus, after Takeout, I don't want people deciding I've got some kind of fetish for blood and guts. I still puzzle over why godix said he was surprised I would make a video like that. :| "A video like that?" What does that MEAN? I don't think I come across as all that warm and fuzzy...

The Good: I am plowing through my list of final to-dos with great determination and success!

The Bad: Unfortunately, the list of "nice to-dos" seems to be growing in direct relation to how my final to-dos are shrinking. Not unexpected or unusual, but aggravating because most the nice to-dos relate to trying to compensate for the shortcomings of the AMV, which is just never going to be saved by nice to-dos.

The Ugly: My soul-damning liquify effect is now looking a little more like Purgatory material. How many effects does one have to stop and examine the actual video frame of in order to be properly impressed? Not many. I certainly never have, and I'm a chronic [ab]user of this type of effect. Oh well, hopefully it gets laughs - if it does, that's all that really matters.

Post-Production/Special Effects: 82 hours - is going to win the edit/effects race...

The Good: My list of final things to do seems to have stopped growing longer and actually shrunk by three items yesterday.

The Bad: The list would have shrunk further had not I been completely sidetracked by some other things (which of course were not on the list).

The Ugly: I don't like how one of the things on the list came out, so it will continue to plague me for at least another month and a half. Plan is to release this video on April 5, assuming con finals are in my future. If not, it will be released once I get the bad news, probably mid-March. Regardless, end-date for AMV editing is the end of next month.

While I have enjoyed working on this AMV far more than any of my others, aside from the first month or so, it has basically been a very "all work and no play" sort of endeavor. I'm not sick to death of it like I usually am by this point, I have been plodding away for the past couple months, getting things done because they just have to be done (helloooo rotoscoping!), but not getting too worked up over any of it one way or the other. Makes for a boring journal, I'm sure. I hope that making the credits will perk me up a bit, it usually does. For me it's kind of like celebrating the end of something (wait, that's EXACTLY what is is...) and having the freedom to do anything I want.
