JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • This is supposedly going to be the worst year for spring pollen on record. • Also: musings on how refinishing furniture is like making AMVs. 2012-04-28 11:17:57 OMG....I can't BREATHE...pollen is CRAZY, you can literally wake up one morning (like this morning) and realize "Yep, it's pollen time!" I like to open the windows in my place, of which I have many, but that just lets more pollen in, so they're closed, but I still can't breathe.

Doesn't help that we just got a ton of rain after about 4-5 months of near-drought conditions, and now I think the mold and mildew underneath the floorboards is springing forth. The area I live in is, unfortunately, very sparse with housing opportunities. :| Apparently I'm supposed to be married by now, or something, and be splitting housing costs with a significant other.

Here's a new AMV analogy I came up with: my AMV hobby is very much like furniture refinishing. There's a ton of crappy old furniture out there that could theoretically be refinished, but if what's underneath is poorly built and of inferior grade wood to begin with, I really don't want to waste my time with it. When I do happen upon something affordable and worth the effort or spiffing up, though, I dive right in and ignore painful things like carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis to get the job done. Then, when I am finished, I question whether all that time and effort was worth it, and am both more leery and more susceptible than ever to taking on another project. :D

That's not a perfect analogy, though. If given the choice between editing and refinishing, I'd probably go with the latter to avoid the former.

    ...

    uuughhhhh can't...BREATHE!!!
  • @_@ 2012-04-21 20:56:21 So I've been working a lot today on my Lip Flapper "Making of LFS" interview answers, and I'm a little appalled by how much work went into this AMV. I mean, I knew at the time that I was just sort of plowing ahead, doing whatever needed to be done, with little regard for what that meant, but OMG...going back through these files is just...appalling.

What the hell was I thinking, making an AMV with effects like that?!

Doing this reconnaissance has made me realize WHY I said had so much "fun" making this video, though: it's because most of it wasn't video editing, it was graphics work, which I do for a living. Despite oftentimes having a love/hate relationship with my livelihood, apparently I still fundamentally find it pleasurable.

See? This is what we learn from our AMVs, all kinds of things about ourselves!
  • @ Meli 2012-04-15 09:25:34 Yes, now that you mention it, I have an incredibly bad track record when it comes to being physically healthy at cons.

2008 AB - Got extremely sick at the con, not pneumonia, but something pretty close. Don't remember much of that weekend, because of it.

2008 AAC (I think) - Slipped on stairs outside my apartment on my way out the door and fractured my ankle. BAD. As it turns out, I fractured a bone less than 9% of the population even has.

2009 AAC (I think) - Missed due to surgery on aforementioned fractured bone, which it took a year for them to diagnose properly (they don't look for fractures in bones you aren't supposed to have, it seems).

    2012 AB - Food poisoning.

And yes, if I go to AB again and you're there, we need to hang out some more!! :D

My comments about not being happy with my video mostly come down to wanting to do better with editing, concept and storyline. Effects work takes a huge amount of time and effort, it's not something I ever wanted to specialize in or have my videos known for, and it takes me away from other things I want to work on improving at. I don't know if I'm able to make a compelling drama video, for instance, and I would really like to try. I have a handful of concepts I'm fairly confident in and - if I don't have to worry about 100+ hours of effects - hopefully will be able to at least experiment a bit and find out if they're doable.

This definitely sends me right back to the days of starting, but not finishing, AMVs, though. If everything doesn't fall into place as I demand, I tend to get very frustrated and abandon ship. Takeout was the only video I've successfully forced myself to finish that came really close winding up in the trash can many times.
  • @Bashar 2012-04-11 19:19:22 It's ok, don't worry! Next time I'll give someone my number. ^_^

Never thought I'd be thanking someone for filming my video at a con and posting it on the 'Tube, but thanks, Shin. Sephiroth sounds so much more epic in an auditorium. :D
  • @ Shin 2012-04-11 18:07:48 So THAT'S where you guys were sitting during the Masquerade...jeez...apparently I should have gotten in line for balcony seating a lot sooner. -_- Looked for you guys, but didn't see anyone. Did you sneak in way ahead of time or something thanks to Adam's staff privileges?

*feels bad for missing out on hanging out with people* I missed most of the fun at AB, obviously. Stupid food poisoning... -_- stupid hotel delaying my room... stupid me...

Man, I really need to get into the AB contest again so I can have another shot at all this and try to redeem myself as a fairly friendly person. :(
