Yeah, so I'm off to a great start. This footage is a mess, so I figured I'd try to clean it up a good bit before editing with it, so my effects don't suffer. Spent an hour troubleshooting filters which didn't work, but finally got a bunch of them to cooperate and settled down to export my AVI. First time through I was amazed at how quickly the footage processed, around 15 FPS (and when I am amazed, I should know by now that this means something's wrong). So I happily open it up in Premiere and see that it looks terrible.
Yep. VDM didn't reload my AVS script properly, so it didn't process the footage with all the filters.
So...I reload everything and hit "go" and see that the rate is now around 2 FPS and that it will now take 18 hours to process this footage. MUCH better. Yep. Off to a great start. -_- Feels like old times!

Well...let's see how this goes.

The Good: This is a video I've wanted to make for many years, in fact it was the first AMV concept I ever had. It's nothing earth shattering and I'm not sure what will even happen if I try to make it, but I feel like I need to give myself a break and for once try to edit casually and see if I can do this for fun.
The Bad: Though I know it's a good idea and I fully endorse the practice, I've never been one to storyboard my videos, which is a big reason I get so frustrated making AMVs. This one could go a couple different ways, but I won't know which until I get in there and find out what works.
The Ugly: I swear I felt my blood pressure rising while typing that last sentence. :| I also have a tequila-induced headache right now...I'm sure that's not helping.

Self-Torture, HO!

Casshern Sins is one of my favorite anime series, not because it's the greatest thing ever, but because it's one of the few series I watch and am not in the back of my mind (or front, for that matter) constantly finding fault with things. I have a video concept for C.S. that I think would work quite well, however I'm rewatching the series and - a little over halfway through - am getting increasingly depressed by how depressing this anime is.
I'd kind of forgotten about that aspect of C.S., but this is the most depressing thing I've voluntarily experienced in at least a year, the last being a book by the title of "The Crimson Petal and the White," which I own (I only buy books I really like), but always feel quasi-suicidal after reading. C.S. isn't at that level, but it is bad enough to make me reconsider whether I can make an AMV so full of unpleasantness. Yes, that's the GOAL...but I'm not sure I can hack it. This is one reason my ill-fated XII crashed and burned three times - I just couldn't stomach being up to my eyeballs in all kinds of negative drama.
If I tried to make two AMVs at once - one upbeat, one downbeat - I know which one would get all of my attention. :|

Why isn't Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust remastered on Blu-Ray?

That DVD is absolutely AWFUL looking! I've had an idea for an AMV ever since...well, jeez, ever since I knew what an AMV was that uses D: Bloodlust, but that video looks like it was dragged through the mud and then beaten with a scratched roll of film! While watching it just now, I almost got stomach cramps thinking of all the filtering work that would be required to make it look good (filtering work I can't handle).
This is really terrible. That is a landmark anime property and it hasn't been cleaned up and reissued?? Are we going to have to wait until some kind of 25th year anniversary in 2026 or something? Now I wonder what the FMVs from the Bloodlust game look like...I have that old PS CD, somewhere, which has footage on it not found in the movie. Hmmm...
Also watched The Avengers today. Not a bad movie, just felt rather forced and unsatisfying at times (not to mention the gaping plot holes). I really would have preferred the same twists and turns as occurred in Thor, particularly since Loki was such a central character. That would have made the movie for me, if they'd made Loki something other than a puppet bad guy...but nope, didn't happen. Maybe in Thor 2? Ok, maybe I'm a bit partial to Loki...but I can't help it...I will take a "tall, dark and handsome" Loki over a "tall, blonde and handsome" Thor any day. *sigh* Actually, I will take an Orlando Bloom Legolas over a Chris Hemsworth Thor, too...it's the long hair. I have a thing for guys with (nice) long hair. :|

The truth about my AMV hobby.
2012-05-03 21:00:53
I inadvertently came up with a very good explanation of how I operate, in terms of making AMVs. Gotta write it down here, of course.
Generally speaking, it should be no great secret by now that making AMVs is not normally one of my favorite pastimes. I will do many things to avoid editing - last weekend I pulled up my 5x7 area rug, dragged it outside and got down on my hands and knees to scrub it clean in 50-degree weather for an hour. Add a tagline under the mental image this conjures that says "She could have been editing," and there's a good example of where AMVing falls on my list of things to do in my spare time.
It's not so bad, actually. Anyone questioning "Well then why DO you make AMVs, if you dislike it so much," can chew on this: the reason I've not made many AMVs is because, quite simply, if I don't enjoy making them, they don't get made. In fact, making my last AMV finally tipped the scales in terms of my having spent more hours successfully finishing a video than attempting and failing to make one. That's a lot of hours. That's why I don't edit anymore unless I'm pretty sure I'll see it through to the end.
heh, so I guess this makes a couple of introspective journal posts in a row. If I ever start editing again, things will go back to good/bad/ugly normalcy. ^_^ Speaking of which, today I came up with a twist on a long-standing AMV concept which had sort of "clicked" in my mind. It also had me dreaming pleasant dreams of people watching the video and spitting their soda all over their screen at regular intervals. Maybe I'll make it...like I said, it "clicked." Uses MOHS, though...it's perfect, but I'm tired of that series. I've ripped & clipped it about eight times, now, and know exactly what's there and what's not there.
