I tried to determine whether it's my AMV that's causing the problem, or something else, and attempted to encode some other uncompressed AMV stuff I have around. Same exact results. Very interesting. I also burned my MPEG-2 on a DVD and popped it in my DVD player on my TV - the aspect ratio did NOT correct itself, so...apparently my paranoia is extremely well founded. I am not a crazy person!

I am starting to get suspicious that perhaps it's something about Scintilla's template which is causing the problems. Not saying he made it wrong...but I'm going try and encode to MPEG-2 without using his template and see what happens. Sending the uncompressed file to someone else to encode might be the only way to resolve the problem, otherwise, because I doubt they'd be using his template. @_@

Eh? What was that? What am I going to do if people don't like my AMV? :D

I don't care if they don't like it, or rather, it's not going to ruin the sense of accomplishment I get out of this AMV. This is the best I can do right now and one can't really ask for more than that. It's not an incredibly great AMV, but I'm quite pleased that I was able to take my idea and make it a reality, which as I know I've stated before is what I really enjoy about this whole process.

*sigh* The consensus is that something really weird is going on with my AMV, insofar as TMPG is concerned. I’ve even contacted the contest coordinator and he said he’s never seen anything like this…but he also offered to encode my uncompressed AVI for me, which is incredibly generous, so maybe there is hope. The main thing I’m concerned about is handing over an AMV that has a serious color shift problem and having whomever is reviewing it think “Man, why did she mess around with the color so much?” I DIDN’T…my uncompressed AVI looks as good as the original DVD footage and I took great pains to make sure of that! I even watched my MPEG-2 at work, on the faintly hopeful idea that perhaps my home computer is just not displaying MPEG-2 properly, but nope, over saturation is IN the file – it seems to have nothing to do with the computer’s playback capabilities or settings.

*sigh* So the new game plan is to very quickly wrap up a few outstanding things, editing-wise, this weekend and export a final version. Then I will very quickly burn my uncompressed AVI on DVD and mail it in. I will also very quickly make a messed up MPEG-2 out of it and upload that. This way, I figure, the contest coordinator can see the extent of the damage and try his hand at encoding the AVI himself, all the while operating with first-hand knowledge of what the AMV is supposed to look like and what happens when TMPG gets a hold of it on my computer. I may risk bringing my encoding software in to work and trying to MPEG-2ize there.

*sigh* There should be a VCA for the person who’s put up with the most horrendous editing obstacles. I’d win.

Once I have my final AMV, I will not be uploading it for at least a few weeks. Despite the fact that I am extremely eager to put this project behind me, I still have to make the bumpers. Oh yeah…I’ve got some plans for that. I’m really looking forward to making them, actually, because the pressure will be off and it should be just a really fun editing experience (hahahaha).
  • :( 2008-02-06 21:15:19 I hate it when I'm right about how horribly all my AMV endeavors turn out: my MPEG-2 compression crashed and burned. Literally. Cloud & Co. have sunburns. I don't get it. They're also a little squished. I still don't get it. As far as I know I've done everything right, video-wise. Why do these things happen to me?

This will make the third or fourth time I've yelled this in the past four or five years:

GIMME A BREAK!! ALL I WANT TO DO IS MAKE AN AMV!!

I guess I should say "AMVs," now, since I managed to get one done after years of tragedy after tragedy and more obstacles than I care to recall. But yeap, here's another one for the history books.

THIS is why I was so determined to finish this AMV several weeks before the deadline. Imagine if this had happened the weekend before it was due? OMG...*keels over* I've got three weeks to straighten it out. Please, please, please, PLEASE someone in the forum help me. :(

Lot of time spent doing and redoing (x 12) graphics on this project. Last night Cloud got himself a makeover, because he was looking really shabby on the cover of GQ. Yes, that's right, he's on the cover of GQ. There is such a thing as an AMV spoiler.

I plan to try and get 'Bustin into MPEG-2 and MP4 this weekend because if I can't do it, I need to have lots of time to figure it out.

I think my huge warning in Sephiration Anxiety's info section about the messed up aspect ratio has done its job. Lots of people are checking it out and lots of people aren't downloading it. Heh.

  • ok, now I'm allowed to do this -_- 2008-02-05 10:14:53 Sephiration Anxiety made it through the first round of nominations...this, I guess, demonstrates that:

    a) Using Advent Children is not beating a dead horse
    b) Admitting it was my first video probably was a good idea
    c) Some people don't care about correct aspect ratio very much
c2) Some people don't realize the aspect ratio is not correct (think I've pointed this out enough? I'm trying very hard to bring attention to the fact that it's wrong, aren't I?)

Not sure how I feel about C. Speaking as the creator and as someone who's hyper-paranoid about making my AMVs as good as I possibly can make them - starting with doing everything right, video quality-wise - I know how oddly I tweaked out the aspect ratio, to the point where I honestly didn't know it happened/how it happened for some time after I released it. Turns out I read EADFAG wrong. Speaking as someone who groans when I see messed up aspect ratios, it's an automatic knock-down, in terms of judging a messed up AMV against others that didn't get messed up. If it makes it to the finals I'll be very surprised.

I also made it to the next round of Rookie of the Year, which is completely weird because I've only made one AMV. If 'Bustin had come out a month or two ago, this would be acceptable... but now? Maybe people don't realize I've only made one AMV. @_@ Anyways, no way in hell I'll make it to the next round in this category.

Congrats to Emong, go go Gothic Poetry!! :D
