Just wrote up a preliminary comments summary for this project. Looking it over, it would be blatantly clear to just about anyone that I don't have much invested in this AMV - blood, sweat and tears-wise - nor that it requires much explanation. Granted, my outside-of-the-box thinking where Advent Children is concerned I guess should (at this point) be kind of a given, so there will be no preaching about how we all need to give AC more credit as a viable source of AMVs. I'm still going to SAY it, of course, but it will not be in paragraph form. ;)

And here it is, only a few days after Anime Boston '08, and I'm already fretting about what's going to happen NEXT year. I do not want to run out of time like I did with 'Bustin, but I also don't want to be sitting on an AMV for six months. I theoretically learned my lesson - don't drag out an AMV too long or you'll get truly sick of it - but, like always, I'm faced with projects that I'm not very clear about how to accomplish and which will require a good deal of time simply to figure out how to make. PLUS...spring/summer/fall is coming. Good luck keeping me cooped up indoors at a computer when there's things to do outside!

    Get a laptop!

Yeah right. I can barely afford to get a new desktop, which I'm hoping can wait until I get my tax refunds because I do not want to pull $1,000 out of my savings to buy a new PC and then total my car and desperately need that money for a new one. Not to mention my dog who, I think, needs very expensive hip replacement surgery.

Get a laptop - a Mac! You need it for your career!

First get me another raise so I can afford to buy both a new PC and a new Mac (laptop) and then I'll worry about my career. And my dog.

Get a Mac, get a new job, get a raise!

: Why does everything in life have to cost me money? I think the only thing I own that doesn't shake me down for lots of change is my...mmm...hrm...nope...er...I can't think of anything. :( Wait! No...drat.

    Edit: 7/10

The Good: Got about 50% of this AMV done. I know, I know, what's wrong with me, right? Well, it's not all that much of a WOW AMV, this is just me screwing around - again - with Advent Children and deciding to pull this particular part of my FF7FM compilation out on its own because I highly suspect I will never MAKE FF7FM...and this is too fun not to share. It's also able to stand on its own, with a minor bit of tweaking. I figure hey - I've already made two full-length AMVs, now I can throw a little something weird out there and not have people jump all over me for not making a "real" AMV.

The Bad: Reconstructing this AMV is turning out to be more difficult than I anticipated. The song is a slightly different version, I already was EXTREMELY strapped for footage (why do my AC videos always suffer from this problem? It's very frustrating!) and now I've got to worry about synching to things I didn't have to before...but with the same amount of footage. *sigh* Consequently, this version of the AMV doesn't look quite as solid as the old one, but oh well...

The Ugly: I've pretty much accepted the fact that a) all the footage I've ripped for various AMV projects is fundamentally flawed in some way, aka unusable for convention purposes thanks to MPEG-2 issues and b) it's going to take me getting a new computer OR me reformatting my old one to clear up the problem. Given that I just reformatted this one about five months ago and immediately thereafter this problem showed up, it's looking more and more like I need a new PC. This isn't totally bad, I've been fussing about getting a new one for awhile, I just dread spending the money (which I don't have), re-ripping all those DVDs, making all-new clips FROM those DVDs...etc. etc. and, potentially, still winding up after all is said and done with the same exact MPEG-2 problem!

One thing's for sure, I am very concerned about what's going to happen when 'Bustin is shown at SakuraCon this coming weekend, given what happened at AB. And this time I won't be there in person to evaluate the extent of the damage. :(
  • ok, so: Anime Boston 2008-03-24 09:33:47 /me is still very sick :(

Um, yeah, the whole weekend is rapidly vanishing from my consciousness, no doubt because I wasn't really conscious during most of it. So before I forget, here are a few Drift-centric highlights from AB 2008:

10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday: Three hours in line for my pre-reg badge. Bad bad bad. The line actually extended out of the convention center into the nearby Prudential Center mall, which was giving the mall security guards fits. They herded us inside one of the exhibition halls within about half an hour, though. I never thought I'd say this, but it looks like the Hynes is getting too small to handle Anime Boston. @_@ Not only the lines, the crowds and definitely the main events hall. It seats, what, 4,000 people? There were easily three or four times that number of people attended this year.

1:15 p.m. Someone was going around - in the mall - pointing out people's fan levels. I got labeled "hardcore." What? Why?? Because I wasn't cosplaying, happened to be alone at the time and looked possibly like someone whom you wouldn't think was into anime? Jeez. On the other hand, AMV editors could definitely be considered hardcore fans so I guess he was right. lol

3 p.m. Zipped over to my hotel, had a tiff with the concierge over the rollaway I'd ordered and then zipped back to the con.

5-7:15 p.m. Attended AMV panels, just like I always do, except that - for the first time - I was sitting in that room NOT as a ragingly jealous failure of an editor but as a "real" editor (nevermind a competition finalist). Whoa. Eventually dokool decided to see if he could "unmask" me and asked if I was present (pen tool discussion under way) so finally I stepped out of my Internet hiding place and arrive in the real world. There followed a few episodes of Drift-lampooning, but that's ok.

7:20 a.m. Get frantic call from my sister, who tells me the security guards aren't letting anyone into the building anymore who doesn't already have a badge. This is due to the registration fiasco which occurred this year. She'd shown up explicitly to see the AMV competition Friday night. Her first words to me when I joined her in the lobby were: why are your eyes red? What have you been smoking? Eh?? So anyways, while we debated the registration situation, some guy offered to BUY my badge. @_@ <---- me I said no.

    1:30 a.m. Got into bed.

4 a.m. roommate woke me up with her snoring. After a half hour of this, I piled a bunch of tissues on her face to get her to wake up, which she did, but then promptly went back to sleep and started snoring again.

6 a.m. Got up, for all intents and purposes. Nasty hotel shampoo/conditioner ruined my hair. BAD start to the day! I'm also not feeling good, am very shaking, dizzy, weak, no appetite, cold, etc. I assumed it was because I was finally going to see the AMV competition in a few hours and I was nervous. HA

8 a.m. Joined sis and roomate outside con center, where sis had been waiting in the cold and wind since 5:30 a.m. since she was determined to get registered and see the competition.

8:15 a.m. Joined a few of the other finalists at Starbucks for brief chit chat before the competition. Got the distinct impression that my presence was throwing them off a little. But that's ok, I'm rather used to that happening. :E

10:30 a.m. Finally get to see 'Bustin on the big screen. It's true, my MPEG-2 WAS SCREWED UP. :( The sound was not at the level it should have been, the audio and video kept getting out of sync (which actually made my "good" lipsynching look bad and my bad lipsynching look good, so I guess that worked out ok) and there was some severe blocking at the end. I couldn't really hear the audience's reaction, we got kicked out of the preferred seating area about half an hour into the competition and wound up in the corner. Everyone seemed to really like when Vincent showed up, though, other than that, I didn't pick up that it got much of a reaction. So on all accounts I was rather depressed. I also was appalled by how much I did NOT enjoy the experience...I really did not enjoy watching that AMV at all. Not at all. :(

At this point I was getting really sick so it's all a blur. Consequently...

    *fast forward*

8 p.m. The Masquerade. I get stuck sitting between someone who is not only dressed as Misa Misa, but obviously has the exact same personality, and on my other side a trio of fangirls who are caffeinated out of their minds and have "I need a hug" sessions every 20 minutes. At one point they told me that "It's ok to have fun" apparently because I wasn't jumping around doing the YMCA dance. Sorry girls, I'm sick - and I did the YMCA dance several years ago at AB so I have nothing against it per se.

10:30 p.m. They announce the AMV winners. 'Bustin gets Best Concept!! OMG!! This time I could hear the audience reaction (I was right in the middle of it, after all) and it was phenomenal. My video, the Judge's Choice video and Best in Show definitely got the biggest response. What cracked ME up was that the audience was reacting in places I never imagined they would and NOT reacting where I would have expected them to. oh well :) I picked up my award after the show and fled for my hotel, going to bed around 1 a.m.

Sunday 4 a.m. Woke up with a raging fever and sort of pneumonia-level general feeling of sickness. Got back to sleep at 6 a.m. and got up at 8. This makes my total sleep count for three days around 12-15 hours.

    *fast forward*
11 a.m. Attended the AMV wrap up panel with a couple of the other editors. The thing got started late due to lack of tech support, so I didn't actually get a chance to discuss 'Bustin or take questions. Unfortunately, when my AMV was shown the MPEG-2 issue manifested itself worse than ever before - the DVD player (which was apparently not state-of-the-art) had a hard time playing it, the video was jerky, sound was bad and by the end the audio and video were out of synch by a good 3-4 seconds. :( :( :( :( People still like it though. I put a big note on my AMV in the comments section addressing the problems at AB and assuring them that the online version is better.

I left AB far sooner than I planned because I was feeling so bad. Got home around 4, did some stuff online and then crashed.

So, I'm done. I've done what I've been trying to do for over five years: I made an AMV, I entered it in Anime Boston. I'm done. But I also made it to the finals AND I won an award...this is unbelievable. Now let's see if I can do it again NEXT year. :)
