JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • surfer godix? 2008-05-16 20:54:18 I’m not sure why, but for some reason I had a dream that I walked to ACEN, which happened to be in the mountains where the trade show was, and the only editor who I met there was godix. He was this cute surfer dude. That’s going to bug me for awhile…I don’t usually go for the surfer type.

Oh yes, I debated posting that.

So now the real reason for this journal entry:
My mother and sister were dragged to Anime Boston to see the AMV competition. When they registered they didn't know what to use as their badge names, so they went with "Driftmom" and "Driftsis." They even roped some poor schmuck into taking a picture at the con with us holding up our badges. (Embarrasment? CHECK) This gives a great deal of insight into the level of humor I grew up with. - you don't get something like 'Bustin unless one's outlook on life is largely based around turning everything into a joke of some sort.

Well, the saga continued today. I get to my sister's this evening and they both come around the corner wearing identical 'Bustin t-shirts (my announcement poster/movie poster on the back) with "Driftmom" and "Driftsis" on the front where a name badge would be situated. They also made one for me, just with "Driftroot." What was I saying a few days ago about wanting a new anime t-shirt. *rolls eyes*

It's nice to be reminded that I made this AMV for fun, that it's not all bad and that it has made a positive contribution to AMVing in general. My sister, for instance, used to hate anime and now she watches AMVs quite regularly (on UToob, unfortunately). That's one lost soul saved.
  • MWAHAHAHAHAAA!!! 2008-05-14 12:58:16 THE GOAL: TO MAKE A *********** AMV that does NOT use black fades to synch the intro.

I can do that!! :D I was PLANNING on doing that, but I just found out how rampant those fades are so now I'm extra happy. Maybe this AMV isn't going to be such a bomb after all. :|
  • Ah...how's that for timely? 2008-05-13 23:39:47 ACEN it is. Looks like my failure to RTFM didn't...wait, was that for ACEN? Drat, now I can't even remember which contest entry rules I failed to follow.

Grrrr...it's still quite possible my AMV could act up and cause a spectacular scene of rarely witnessed synch-disaster-proportions...but I hope it doesn't. For a whole BUNCH of reasons. A sure sign something's wrong is my lip synching at the halfway mark looks way, way too good - it's laughable, but it's true. If ithat lip synching looks awesome, my AMV is getting ready to self-destruct. I saw it happen. In person. It was horrible. Fortunately it doesn't seem to affect any of the other videos, otherwise I'd never let it out of the house ever again.

    .....

Well, as always, I wish good luck to everyone - just eyeballing the editors who are the finalists, it's no doubt going to be quite a contest. Here's hoping we show everyone at ACEN a good time, because that is the one and only reason I'm "there."

    *thumbs up*
  • Just a few things before I go off to man a trade show for a few days, attend my sister's graduation and in general take a leave of absence. 2008-05-13 22:46:44 1. If I leave a reply to an op that was longer than that op, is that bad? Am I putting more effort into my reply than they did into their op? Should I therefore not take their op so seriously? I don't know...

    2. Why must I make my video quality over-the-top fantabulous just to break even on video quality scores? I really can't make Advent Children look a whole lot better than it does without making it look fundamentally DIFFERENT and, IMO, that is not being true to the source. Yes, I can ramp up the levels on scenes with a lot of "white" in them to ensure white is white - not a light gray - but I'm not going to color correct every frame on the theory that I know better than the folks at Square-Enix what AC should look like. I prefer the rich look of Dirge of Cerberus over AC, but that doesn't mean I'm going to tamper with AC to make it look like DoC - it comes out very fake (if you know what you're looking at, at least). It's one thing to take an old, ugly video source that's in desperate need of help from the get-go and fiddle with it like crazy, it's quite another to take a video source that has no inherent problems and fiddle with it just for the sake of fiddling with it. ARGH!!

    3. Ditto for audio. I saw a great line, once...I think it was in a thread debating how much we should tweak our audio. The gist of the statement was that we're video editors, not audio editors, and expecting folks to make their audio better than perfect is asking a little too much. Now, thus far every AMV I've made has had some kind of audio manipulation simply to make the song work. Nevertheless, what I get off a CD/DVD is - more or less - what I get. It's the BEST I can get. I'm not an audiophile, I have no interest (or skill) in adjusting the heck out of my songs on the theory that I can make a better version than the original artist. I'd never deduct points from an AMV that uses a perfect copy of a given song.

    4. I had an idea for an AMV that requires me to film myself. This project is probably never going to happen because of the impossible logistics OF filming myself, nevertheless I did have a few fun moments imagining the @_@ of anyone who hadn't realized yet that DR is, yes, of the female persuasion. (Maybe I should put a real pic of me in my profile so people don't think I'm a Pembroke Welsh Corgi?) This film flight of fancy then turned into imagining what would happen if that AMV was shown at a con, and the person next to me glanced from the screen to me and back again (etc.) and suddenly realized who they were sitting beside. ^_^

We need to put more of ourselves into our AMVs; there's this vast pool of opportunity out there that people have, more or less, avoided like the plague. This isn't the 90's, it's not a huge, scary big deal to show people on the Web who we really are. Not me, at least...I understand other folks might not feel that way, and that's fine. heh, what's one of my favorite sayings? Somebody's got to do it, and it might as well be me!!
  • If I lose my Internet connection now, I lose my last remaining connection to the outside world. 2008-05-12 20:49:11 I am old enough to remember life before the Internet. Quite well, actually. Despite my penchant for computers and things PCs were NOT always around - there wasn't a computer in my house until I was in college and I slaved away at a word processor all through high school.

So when moi, stuck in the mountains of Vermont in an area that has spotty cell phone coverage, zero cable service, no such thing as fiber optics and roads that will probably still not be paved by 2200, loses my satellite TV connection I'm like @_@ OMG!! HEEELP MEEEE!! Must...connect to...civilization...

...and I frantically post in my journal here to prove my existance in an otherwise technologically defunct world. Oh the horror!!

Meds situation is not so good. My doctor, who I now suspect is not entirely on my side, only prescibed an additional 15mg of my meds. Grrr...to prop myself up, I'd been taking an extra pill and feeling quite dandy, Unfortunately that extra pill is 60mg. I highly, HIGHLY doubt 15mg is going to do anything for me whatsoever if I'm back to normal on 60mg. WORSE...those little buggers, despite being about 1/4 the dosage of my regular pills, cost exactly half as much as the 60mg. Wha??? If they're going to be that expensive, then I'll just chop my current pills in quarters and call it a day (or four)! It's all the fault of my health insurance, which doesn't cover labwork until I hit my $500 deductible for the year...which is about two blood tests worth of fees. -_-

Oh yes, last night I made a clock. I got overzealous with the design, however, and now have to redo it almost from scratch. What did I say about not jumping into things whole hog this time around? About just making rough drafts of stuff so as to avoid wasting many, many hours on graphics I can easily make once this AMV is near completion? HAHAHAHA ha.
