JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • rearry, rearry quick 'cause I'm three months behind schedule on this 2008-06-10 15:19:06 ANN reported my Anime Boston AMV as 'Busted. *sigh*

First, you'd think if they were going to take the time to report who won what, they'd get the titles of the AMVs right.

Second, suddenly I realized...omg, THAT'S a far better title than 'Bustin. Like, I totally "Busted" Advent Children. Fact is, I very nearly wrote "I came, I saw, I kicked its ass! ~ The Editor" instead of "We came, we saw, we kicked its ass! ~ Reno" which would have made Busted as a title more understandable and also maybe clued more people in to my ulterior motives in making it. Not a lot of people take the time to read the Info section, I'm finding.

*checks weather* For some reason there's a tornado warning for central Vermont. The Weather channel icon in my tray is flipping out.
  • 90 degrees in June in Vermont? 2008-06-09 10:05:10 I got absolutely no editing done over the weekend. Mostly because it was so unbelievably hot and I get downright bleh when it’s hot – I actually felt justified in driving to the store (seven miles away) just to buy a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and eating it all within the space of two hours. I’m not an ice cream person, nor do I adore B&J’s, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

So instead of editing – no wait, actually I did try to do some work on my audio. I’m starting to get a little mad because what I have of my AMV so far is (I think) pretty funny and the idea of never being able to make an entire video out of it is sort of upsetting. Where’s an AMV Hell when you need one? Grrr…Biggest problem is lack of footage, next biggest problem is that I lost an entire DVD worth of footage so now I have to re-rip it all. This is the third time this has happened to me with MOHS. There’s something else I can do with MOHS, of course, and although I tried to rip footage for that project as well, I may need to go back and see if there’s anything I missed.

So instead of editing, I went swimming, finished getting a sunburn, attended a BBQ, impressed a 7-year-old with my l33t Prince of Persia skills, cleaned the house, drank beer, read a book and dredged up Legacy of Kain: Defiance. I sincerely hope they’re going to come out with the next game in that series soon and it had better kick ass because Defiance just doesn’t cut it. Particularly after playing PoP. The Reaver is just so sllooooowwww. The camera is so clunKy. The puzzles are so simpull.
  • Just 'cause 2008-06-06 10:21:50 Overnight I reached the 5,000 hits mark with 'Bustin. Nifty! What's kind of interesting is that things have accelerated dramatically since AX posted their finalist list...I kind of wish they'd kept the actual videos under wraps, though. I don't like the idea of an audience knowing what's about to happen in my AMV. :|

No doubt the situation would be different if my video was not on the Tube, however given the low number of hits over THERE I can't honestly say that it's had a huge impact over HERE. Wish there was some way to track the incoming hits...figure out where they're coming from and suchlike.
  • @ moonie 2008-06-05 21:07:06 I love animals. I can sit and watch people hurting one another and not bat an eye, but animal cruelty? Suffice to say that if anyone ever did anything to my pets I would probably be arrested and put in jail for murder.

I happen to know the extent of my feelings because my sister was the victim of someone who, probably, will kill a human being one day. Certainly he will kill other animals, just like he methodically tortured and killed her two cats, maiming a third who happened to be a kitten. Meanwhile, he told her that one of them ran off while he was petsitting and the other one "fell" and the third one *shrug.*

Cats don't fall. Cats don't just run off (not these cats, anyways). Nor do kittens break their legs all by themselves.

This guy, apparently, goes into homicidal rages during which he supposedly "forgets" what he does. Going to the emergency room to be treated for cat bites and scratches all over his arms and face - for some reason - didn't tip off the authorities that something weird was going on. His "friend" knew all about what happened and helped him hide the evidence, by which I mean blood, gore and two dead cats. After several weeks of sinister goings on which I can barely comprehend, my sister's apartment was a blood-spattered crime scene, she found one of her cats ... destroyed ... in the bedroom and the kitten frightened out of its mind, crippled, under a couch. She took this guy to court - his parents hired an expensive lawyer and after many months of courtroom politics this evil man got off without even a slap on the wrist.

Here's the best part: he was in law school. His friend was too. Yes folks, an individual who knowingly killed several animals, plotted to cover up the crime and lied through his teeth 24/7 about it may just represent you in court someday. I don't think this was the first time he'd done such a thing, either, and you can bet it won't be the last. That goes for his friend/accomplice, too.

I spent the better part of six months trying to get over what happened to those animals, trying to forget. It was weeks before I could sleep at night. When I am reminded of this horrible event, which has certainly changed my sister's life forever - and not in a good way - I make a point to talk about it. Why? Because the signs were there that something was terribly, terribly wrong and they were ignored, covered up and dismissed by every single person who was in a position to prevent this tragedy from occurring, nevermind future ones.

If you see something that seems wrong, if you feel funny about someone or some situation, PLEASE do not disregard it. Take action, look out for those who need protecting, which includes yourself. The price of sitting back and doing or saying nothing is far too high.
  • :(): 2008-06-03 21:15:17 I did not spell "crises" wrong. It is the plural of crisis, as in "Lots of Crises in the Downtown Area." Don't leave QCs about supposed typos unless you're 100% sure how to spell something! :P

    Takeout:
    Add 2 hours

So now it's crunch time. It's become blatantly obvious that what I'm up to probably cannot be sustained for the full length of the song, which in itself is a MUCH pared down version of the original music. It's very difficult, I'm finding, to utilize orchestral music which goes through quite a number of ... er ... not sure of the proper term. Iterations? Stages? Transformations? while also trying to keep an AMV streamlined and coherent.

Right now I've got exactly 2:07 minutes of heavily edited music, and everything's fantastic up until 1:13 mark, where there is a very obvious shift in the music unfortunately preceded by what could be a great ending point except for the fact that the music doesn't end the way I want it to. So far I've had no luck creating an ending there, because the music that I want to end with is quite different - in several ways - from what I'm trying to splice it with. And that last 50 seconds or so is a killer because it's not like the first half of the music at all and would require me to drastically change the way the AMV is put together in that area. This gives rise to the danger that the first half of the AMV and the second half will have very little in common, particularly if I employ the kind of funny sauce I've been experimenting with in the first half, which is probably going to officially label me as a whacko. But what else is new?

The other problem is that I have a pretty limited pool of footage to work from and some of the big scenes I'd planned on making now look like they aren't going to be possible. Consequently, that extra 50 seconds is going to be quite difficult to find footage for. Of course, I kind of doubt that 1:13 seconds is enough time to set up what I'm trying to set up - heck even 2 minutes might be pushing it. I think I'd better back off the linear editing for awhile and figure out how the heck I'm going to do this.

Looks like it's all Ugly today.

Ergh...it's a good thing I make a living being a creative problem solver. -_- Theoretically I'm good at it.
