JOURNAL: DriftRoot (Lauren C.)

  • Hrm 2008-08-12 13:02:49 In a nutshell, this is how I'm interpreting all the (great) feedback I got on Takeout:

"It's too long. The ending great. Make the video only about the ending."

Considering the ending is the only reason the AMV exists at all, that is absolutely PERFECT. Would you watch a video if the editor told you - point blank at the start - that the rest of it is only there to let them get away with the ending? I would. If I really wanted to get my point across, I'd ...hrm...

    /me activates AMV-self-destruct mode.

This is what I did with MSAMAMV, when all my plans suddenly came to a screeching halt and I was left with something I either had to throw out completely...or attempt to salvage in the most bizarre way possible. Hopefully it's not becoming a trend...actually, it already is. I'm far better at destroying my AMVs than actually completing them. I'm trying to BREAK this habit, though.

    /me deactivates detonator.

  • Or, put another way, did my AMV get shown somewhere this weekend that I'm not aware of? 2008-08-10 19:16:35 'cause the hits on 'Bustin spiked and I'm getting random questions like "DUDE do you enter competitions?", which usually happens when it makes a public appearance (not in competition). Unfortunately, I thought it was through with big public appearances, so did it sneak out of the house while my back was turned, or what? Did Vlad do something with 'Bustin again? There was that sci-fi con out in Washington last weekend, but I find it hard to believe that generated such a response. It's like the AMV version of "Where's Waldo."

I just realized something. My AMV has been going to far more conventions than I ever will. It is having WAAAYYY more fun than I am. That is SO UNFAIR!! I MADE YOU!! HOW DARE YOU GO TO CONS WITHOUT ME!!

Clearly I'm a failure at being a stage mother. :| I can't even live vicariously through my own digital progeny. *facepalm*

Also...one can measure how badly I procrastinated on Takeout by how many journal posts I've made this weekend.

Also. If something accident-like happened to Takeout, I would not bother recreating it.

Also, my old computer - which offered me 6+ years of undying devotion in the face of terrible use and abuse - met the blue screen of death this weekend. I bought a new PC just in time, I guess. Poor thing. :( I get very attached to inanimate things.

Also - um. Can't think of anything else.
  • So...who wants to see me make a Yaoi video? 2008-08-10 10:16:47 A long time ago, when I was an AMV editor wanna-be with all kinds of grand ideas, but absolutely zero capability of realizing them (I still haven't figured out why), there was an AMV called "Portrait of the Addict" that I actually spent over 100 hours on, creating a whopping total of 10 seconds of footage, which was eventually thrown out. I keep getting bugged about that video, though, a number of my friends keep asking when it's going to be done (ha!), and the recent success of another yaoi AMV in competition has made me think it's worth pursuing. We'll see. Maybe it'll become my Anime Boston entry for next year, although I never thought I'd ever touch "Portrait" again. Problem with that AMV is that even though I have all the clips ripped, I probably should do them all over again since I haven't perused the series (with 60+ episodes) in many years. Yay. If I am going to go that route, I'd better hop to it, because I only have *checks calendar* eight months left!

Beta feedback on Takeout is confusing me. I'm told it's bad. I'm told it's good. I'm told do this and, on the other hand, no, don't do that. So, mustering my courage, I will solicit more feedback and hope I don't get told to go away and stop pestering people. :|
  • Anti-Drift editor? That...sounds a little...um...hrm...not sure what the right word is... 2008-08-08 20:08:16 "I'm like a sort of anti-Melee. Or an anti-"whatever editor you can think of that isn't finishing videos nearly as fast as they damn well should".

I'd say I'm doing pretty good this year. My previous record was 5 years, no AMVs. Last year I released one and this year I released two within the space of two months. I'm cranking out videos left and right, clearly. Ok, that's it. MC, that nine-month quote is going in my sig because slow editors need more love! *goes to find it*

*wanders around* I may try some radical editing techniques this weekend, just to see if I can kick myself in the butt. Sort of attack my terrible editing abilities with my own creative philosophy, which is to throw something out if it's not working. I micromanage too much, that's why it takes me so long to do ANYTHING. Maybe I need to tighten down the seat belt, grab my footage by the throat and open it all up full throttle...see what happens. Is this how other people edit? I don't know, although I can't imagine how the heck other people do it all so fast if it's not something along those lines. How do other people edit? Obviously I'm doing something very, very wrong.

    *mutter mutter*

    Eh? What's that?

    *mutter*

    Oh, right, THEY'VE got "talent."

AAANNNNDDD... happy birthdy to Amo-Chan, welcome to the wonderful realm of 30-somethings! lol
  • fun with semantics 2008-08-06 22:24:45 I have a t-shirt which says "Got anime?" on it, and I usually wear it when I go places on vacation (or cons). The comment that bugs me the most is when I explain that anime is Japanese animation and someone responds, "Like cartoons?"

    *sigh* "Yes, animation."

    "Oh, like Pokemon."

THAT'S going to far. I refuse to let anyone walk away thinking my t-shirt says "Got Pokemon?" So my usual response is "Not really." Hey, if the the first thing that pops into their head when the subject of anime comes up is Pokemon, there's probably not much I say in under two seconds to educate them other than "Not really."

I know!! I'll make myself a t-shirt which contains a lengthy rant about what, exactly, anime is (and isn't) so then I can just point to the explanation. Hand out flyers? That would be funny...someone asks me what my shirt says and I hand them a brochure on anime. LOL

Takeout beta - ugly, unrefined and unfunny as it is - is going to be available soon. I may ask a few people for help, but volunteers are welcome as long as they aren't expecting too much from me and understand I'm not changing the underlying premise of the AMV unless a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes and I decide to sink another 60 hours into it. I'm probably going to end up sinking another 20 into it, easy. :|
