  • Chapter 1 - A New Beginning (The Present Past) Part 1 2003-07-06 08:51:28 --

    Agenda:

-Inform Dr. of cancellation of project (9 pm)
-Dispose of the doctor (9:10 pm)
    -Report to superior (9:30 pm)

    --

Two men stood almost completely engulfed in darkness had it not been for the street light. From a distance, the light was only dim enough to give an outline of half their bodies. However the one closer to the light could be more easily identified to be wearing a cloak...

"I think we can almost stabilize the portals." The man in the cloak spoke. He faced the opposite direction and didn't even seem to be speaking to anyone in particular.
The other man walked in to the light, to reveal himself as an old man in a suit. He looked important.
"We're cutting the funds to the project."
At this the man in the cloak immediately turned around.
    "What?! But we're so close!"
"We don't even know if your portals lead to this other world you keep speaking of. You haven't showed any proof in the past year of our funding that the virtual world you created can be infiltrated, let alone exist."
"But, just one more year! We're almost there! I know the military could greatly use our technology."
"We don't think this is going anywhere. The project is being terminated even as we speak. Viruses are being uploaded in to your research files and all labs working on this assignment are being destroyed."
The man in the cloak fell to his knees.
"You...uploaded viruses...? You don't know what you've done..."
"What you say doesn't matter anymore. Dr. Vash, you are here by no longer necessary."

At this the man in the suit took out a gun and prepared to execute the one in the cloak, now known to be Dr. Vash.
    "Any last words?"
"You will regret what you did..." answered Dr. Vash as he pulled out a device from his pocket.
He pressed a button and at that a portal appeared out of mid air where he was pointing the device. However, it looked highly unstable and started flickering on the spot.

A loud gunshot could be heard down the whole street. But there was only one person who heard it. The man in the suit stood alone, half in awe that it had actually worked. Perhaps he had made a mistake. For the man in the cloak was now gone. He had jumped in to the portal. And disappeared.

    --

The man in the suit looked nervously at his watch as he entered the office of his superior to report the disturbing event that had just occurred.
He sat down to his impatient superior. A fat man, with lots of jewelry.

    "Report, Frank." demanded the superior.
"I informed the doctor." Began Frank.
    "And?"
    "I continued with assassinating him."
"Good. So now I guess we can move on t-" Frank just had to cut him off.
    "-But he got away."
The superior slightly widened his eyes and leaned forward.
    "How...?"

    --

Meanwhile,Dr. Vash had entered another space, another time. Every thing around him had a weird sense. It was as if his eyes had something in them. Blurring his vision slightly, for the graphics were all wrong. Pixels were all over the place.
    "Damn viruses..." mumbled the doctor.
Suddenly messeges began to pop up all around him as he continued traveling through space and time on a never ending fall in what seemed to be a tunnel of data.

As if on que, the messeges displayed exactly what the doctor thought they would.

    VIRUS ALERT!
    VIRUS ALERT!
    WARNING: MULTIPLE VIRUS INTRUSIONS DETECTED.
    INITIATING LOCK DOWN.
    ...
    ...
    LOCK DOWN FAILURE.
    VIRUS CONTAMINATION IMMINENT.

"Damn...they're too fast..." The doctor began typing something in to his pocket computer. New messeges began popping up all pver the tunnel around him.

    CUSTOMIZING INTERFACE.
    DATA TRANSFER COMPLETE.
    WELCOME BACK, DR. VASH.

His falling suddenly came to a stop. As if the time around him had stopped. A portion of the tunnel around him vanished instantly, and he floated towards that exit. His cloak swayed in motionless wind. Upon leaving the tunnel, one last messege could be just barely seen flashing in the background from the tunnel off the reflection of his lens from his glasses. He didn't look back. For he already knew what the messege was.

    NOW ENTERING:
    DIGITAL WORLD 1.0
  • Chapter 1 - A New Beginning (Ray's Perspective) 2003-06-27 21:54:18 I looked around at the dark room. Barely any light was getting through the blinds from the window. From the dim light I could make out some people. People I recognized. In one corner I saw Clem. He was talking with May and Melanie... They were laughing at some joke he said probably. How predictable of Clem, but...I was happy he let me know.

I continued looking around the room. Cindy was in another corner. I really wanted to go talk to her. Like I had said several years ago to her in gr 5. I still love her. I stepped forward to talk to her, only to notice Samson standing in the corner with her. He was flirting with her.

I stood in the center of the room. I couldn't take it anymore! I couldn't take Samson doing what he was doing. I turned to get my bag and leave when suddenly I heard her scream. I heard Cindy scream, but I decided to ignore it. Samson can help her!

She screamed again. I turned to see a figure rush through the door. It was hard to make out his face. He was wearing a cloak. The cloaked figure went up to Cindy, took something of hers, and ran back out the way he came. Samson gave chase.

"I can't let him be the hero again, I have to repay Cindy somehow for all the things and feelings she's given me." I don't know why, but flash-backs suddenly came up in my mind. From the first time I saw her, to the last thing I had said to her. I gave chase.

We were running along the street now. I caught up to Samson. No one was watching. So I...I kicked Samson into a car. I finally caught up to the figure and took him down. I didn't care who he was, I got back what he took. It was an eraser. It looked familiar.

Another flash back took place. It was the eraser I had given Cindy a long time ago... She's been keeping it with her all this time as I have kept hers! A sudden rush of happiness came to me. It was so much at once...I fainted. Everything went black.

    Bright sunlight flooded the room.
"Wake up! We're gonna be late." My brother's familiar, and annoying voice I immediately recognized.
I got up. It was all a dream.
A sigh of relief came out though I meant to keep it inside.
It was...another day. I wonder if I'll finally talk to Cindy today.

Before I knew it the school day was over. I looked over to Clem who was sitting beside me. I think he looked a little more upset than usual.

    --

Ray: Wow, today has been going slow.
Clem: What do you expect...it's school.
Ray: Well you seem kinda down today...? At least usually you pretend to be happy?
Clem: Whatever. You ready? Let's go home.
Ray: Already? I thought you'd want to wait for..-M
    Clem: -Shut up.
    Ray: Well...it's just that..-
Clem: -You've been warned. Let's go already.
    Ray: Ok Ok...geez..

I wonder what's wrong with him this time. I thought he wanted to wait for May..he always tries to catch them on their way home. Maybe something happened last night...or today...oh well. I really hate it when he tells me to shut up...he's done it so many times. But...there's no point telling him. He doesn't understand how it feels. I wonder how he would feel if I cut him off while he was saying something. Whatever...he can do what he wants. We're still friends on the inside. I know we are.

Giving off another sigh we began walking, walking that 20 minute walk that we always did, with or without May and Melanie. I still think Clem wanted to wait...but what's wrong I wonder...maybe he'll tell me if I asked more.

    Ray: So..
    Clem: What..?
    Ray: What's up?
    Clem: That's a stupid question.
    Ray: ...What's with the attitude?
    Clem: ...
    Ray: ...
    Clem: Ray...am I a bad person?
    Ray: Well...hm...

This question completely caught me off guard. I still wanted to know what was wrong, but asking me if he was a bad person...this was different. Maybe Clem does see more than he seems. Perhaps he is seeing his flaws and wants to fix them.

Suddenly, the cars on the street all stopped! A weird feeling came over me. It felt like time had stopped all around us. I took a quick glance at my watch.

"Huh?" The seconds being displayed weren't changing... Something was definitely wrong.

The next couple moments were like out of some science fiction movie. A portal appeared and a figure stepped out. He was in a cloak and seemed oddly familiar...but where did I see this guy before...?

I continued to stare at the figure trying to figure out where I knew him from.

"It's time." The figure said to us both. I wonder what he meant...it's time...for what? Before I think any further, a sudden darkness came up from the ground and engulfed us both.

    What's going on?!
  • Chapter 1 - A New Beginning (Clem's Perspective) 2003-06-27 21:11:23 -Hey it's you!
    Yup.
    -You're...me!
    Yup.
    -??
    Yup.
-Um...so...yea...I wonder how today will be like...?
    I dunno.
    -You never know.
    Yup.

It was odd how I continued staring at the mirror...every morning the conversation would be the same. Everyday I asked myself the same questions...but...he never knew. I never knew.

The stupid staircase made odd sounds here and there as I walked. I tried to go quietly...but those last couple of steps just screamed out "JUMP!"
A boom could be heard all over the house from the bottom of the staircase where I had landed. There was no point of being quiet, I don't know why I was even bothering to be. The house only contained my mom and I. Father left us way back...I don't even remember. I choose not to.

"Another day..." I found myself mumbling again, like I did every morning, it had become a routine. A silent schedule where things that usually occurred had to occur in order for things to be, or at least seem "normal."

Deciding to skip breakfast I headed out the door...again I woke up late. Again this would be the consequence. Surrounding myself by routines was my own way to keep reality out, even though I knew routines would soon become my reality. I had to keep them...they were like drugs...except they didn't hurt me.

Ahead lay the sidewalk, so...flat...plain..I almost wished a crack would suddenly appear cutting straight through the middle. Perhaps this was a cry from myself for the pathetic routine to change? To stop normality, but then again, nothing is what we can call normal. Not after we've been chosen.

I finished humming another song just as I reached the school entrance. Another 20 minute walk had just passed by without me noticing.

    --

Ray: Wow, today has been going slow.
Clem: What do you expect...it's school.
Ray: Well you seem kinda down today...? At least usually you pretend to be happy?
Clem: Whatever. You ready? Let's go home.
Ray: Already? I thought you'd want to wait for..-M
    Clem: -Shut up.
    Ray: Well...it's just that..-
Clem: -You've been warned. Let's go already.
    Ray: Ok Ok...geez..

It seemed like any other day...almost any other day. We began walking. On the 20 minute walk back. We were going to split at the intersection soon..nothing seemed out of place. Just another routine with the beginning changed a little. I walked without looking back. There was no point.

    Ray: So..
    Clem: What..?
    Ray: What's up?
    Clem: That's a stupid question.
    Ray: ...What's with the attitude?
    Clem: ...
    Ray: ...
    Clem: Ray...am I a bad person?
    Ray: Well...hm...

My thoughts were pretty random at the time, but what happened next completely changed my life and Ray's...and my thoughts..were immediately discarded and replaced with horror.

The cars on the street all came to a halt. Not a screeching halt, not a breaking halt. It was synchronized. All at once. It wasn't a stopping in motion, it was more of a stopping in time.

    "Huh?" I heard Ray question.

Fear was the first sense that I felt. This wasn't the first time it had happened to me. Deep inside, I knew what was about to come next. I had tried to keep this scene at the back of my head since it had first come to me, but now..there was no holding it back.

A figure suddenly stepped through a half portal that had appeared before Ray and I on the side walk. It was as if it was right from one of my worst nightmares. It was him...again...the one who changed me...chose me...from the beginning. I looked at Ray in half awe, half fear of the current situation. Ray was clueless, but I could still see the fear in his eyes as he stared at the figure approach us.

"It's time." The figure said to us both. Suddenly we were engulfed in darkness all around us.

This was only the beginning...I knew. I just wish Ray knew.
