JOURNAL: iserlohn

  • A semi-lazy Saturday 2002-06-29 22:14:07 So I got up this morning, and after taking the mandatory long leisurely shower of the day (Gas, Water, and Electric are included in the rent - can we say 30 min?) and then call my sister to find out when we're all meeting up. She says about an hour from when I hung up the phone with her, so off through DC we go to get to the Smithsonian Folk Fest.

How was it? Not bad. Very hot and EXTREMELY crowded. I like events but I absolutely hate crowds. They drive me nuts and I feel very violated when people I *know* get close, let alone people who I don't know in large masses. There was some interesting stuff, but we walked around and tried to avoid getting trampled by the mobs moving around. I took a few pictures and broke in the new camera.

After that, we walked back to the Dupont area and went to Fresh Fields. My sister and her bf got some stuff for snacking and the next couple days' meals and I got some amazingly good tiramisu (I love tiramisu, it's very much a weak point) and two bars of Dr. Bronner's All-One Peppermint Castile Soap to take overseas. This stuff absolutely rocks and is mandatory for travelling - it's highly versatile and can be used for everything, including laundry, shampoo, and toothpase (though I don't recommend the latter, but few do.) It's easier to take two bars of this with me than bottles of shampoo, etc. that could depressurize or spill on stuff...better to play it safe, though this reminds me that I need to get some more shave gel and razor blades before I go. I guess I'll get them on my last grocery run or do a last minute CVS excursion or something.

After Fresh Fields we went back to my sister's apartment, called my mother to wish her a happy birthday, talked for a bit, and then I came home.

Did some GRE review tonight. 4 days until the actual exam. The verbal is kicking my ass severely, the math and analytical aren't even a challenge, but memorizing all the vocabulary. The Kaplan CD is fairly useless now, as its vocabular builder game is getting really repetitive, and even though I'm still fucking up, it's always the same words. I think it's only got a 200 word vocab in it...

Tomorrow is a day for a full practice exam, as are Monday and Tuesday. I still need to do my writeup for AMST...

Someone is cooking downstairs. It smells really good, even though I'm willing to bet that it's something I don't eat. Ah well, so it goes. I'll probably make the garlic mashed potatoes that I got at Giant tomorrow or Monday. I got them because I haven't really had potato stuff in AGES and it was either some garlic mashed potatoes or fries, and I don't know if I trust the oven, so microwavable mash it is.

The current video is going...nowhere. I grabbed a couple more clips tonight but not as many as I'd hoped or as good as I'd hoped. I'm going to have to rerip another one of the DVD's and scan through it again for something good to use instead. Until then, I'll try and keep reworking with what I have which really wasn't enough. *sigh* I thought this was going to be a simple project, but as usual, wrong. The editing is still going to be simple but the amount of it isn't - which is good IMHO, but it's more work. I shudder to think of the next non-group project video I make, should I get the footage for it. Damn scary how many edits it's going to take, but it should be great. I can almost see the entire project comeing together in my mind already. Pity that it probably won't get done for a year.

All for now, getting into a rant mode that I don't need to be in, even though it does feel good to just type.
  • Site is back up... 2002-06-28 21:23:21 Now for Journal Replies!

In other news, dropped about $300 on stuff for getting ready to travel today and I still don't have everything I need yet either. *sigh* travel is a curse.

Class is still pointless, boring, and stupid, so it goes.

Not much to talk about and yet all too much at the same time.
  • Shout-Out/Reply... 2002-06-25 19:11:40 Doki: ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't usually read SinFest, but maybe I should start...that's classic. *sigh* Maybe Hard will do a parody for movie 2...'cept he seems to be on his own stuff...

    But yes, that's great.
  • Plushies are people too 2002-06-17 20:03:05 Fucking Mikhail wanted me to dig up a picture for him and in doing so IE opened the image and promptly wiped out about 2/3 of my report which had been in here. There was a LOT of text there and I don't feel like redoing all of it, and it broke up the flow . Sorry folks, that's the way it goes.

    So, the short version:

What I got in the dealer room: Manga brick which includes the new Gainax series, two One Piece plushies (Nami and Zorro), a giant Doremi plushie, a One Piece pencil board, a Lupin keychain, a Gatchaman keychain, and a talking Zenigata figure.

Best moment: finding out that I placed in the AMV contest

    Worst moment: Anime Squares

Best moment in someone else's non-party room: getting a Flaming Poof from Waldo (it's a drink. not a nasty yaoi action, but a drink.)

Worst moment in someone else's non-party room: none

Best moment in my room: Hanging out with Bob and Kara and Kara's friend that I can't remember and talking about Lupin and stuff.

Worst moment in my room: Being woken up at 4:30AM Friday Night by Chris telling me that there was a girl crashing on our floor and that I wasn't as pretty as she was to be sharing the bed with.

Best moment in a party room: Plushiecon's Friday night party. This thing just rocked!

Worst moment in a party room: The guys burning anime CD's for profit - and getting out about 2 minutes before they got busted for it.

Best industry interaction: Talking with Carl Macek about Lupin and such for about 20 min. after closing ceremonies

Worst industry interaction: The Anime in Japan party, because I didn't get enough time after the panel to talk to scott frasier about stuff on a personal basis.

Best time in the hall: Holding court with Beth's roommate's laptop and an AMV CD.

Worst time in the hall: Friday before 3PM when anything decent actually started.

I think that's the big stuff. Lots of good things happened, a couple bad things, but nothing life changing either way. Sorry for the brevity, blame Mikhail Koulikov for it should you ever see him in person (he's going to Shoujocon, Otakon, AX, and at least one other con this summer.)

Next con: Anime USA (where I will be running at least one workshop...)
  • To EK... 2002-06-13 12:16:43 I feel so thoroughly honored that I'm so forgettable, to the point where no one knows my name.

Suddenly the theme from Cheers pops into my head. Pity that I never actually watched Cheers....
