Ein toter Tag...
2002-07-21 11:34:33
My German is sucking ass today. So is the day in general. I hate it when I don't have anything to do because everything here requires other people who have not been accessible. At least I've finished prepping a vocabulary study sheet, as the book that the teacher xeroxes our worksheets from has neither a straight up vocab list for each chapter nor proper spelling, as it was published before the 1995 spelling reforms (but my dictionary is current.)
At least tonight there will be people to hang out with...and class again tomorrow.

OK so I lied...
2002-07-21 05:54:51
we DID end up doing stuff last night.
Me, Yakob, Sabine, and Roman went for a bit of a walk through Strol, and sure enough, ended up at the Imbiß near the Wiesenfest. It was about 11:15PM when we got the the Imbiß, and one of Sabine's friends from Vienna came by and hung out, and all of a sudden some guy comes by our table and hands off two readmission stickers to the fest. Roman and Yakob went for a look, and came back a bit later with epressions of "eh" on their faces. Apparently there is a drink here where they mix beer and Almdudler, but I didn't get anything.
Much German was spoken by the native speakers (read: everyone else) while I sat around and looked mostly dazed for most of it, as unless I can really concentrate on what's going on, I stop understanding German, which is a very bad thing.
After midnight when the fest was free anways, they felt I should experience a little piece of Austrian culture so we went over for about 15 minutes. By this point, Sabine's friend had left and it was just the four of us. They got drinks, I didn't, and we listened to some band singing traditional Austrian music like pop songs while my eyes went nuts because the entire tent (if you can call it that, it had a metal structure for the ceiling) was completely filled with smoke.
Once the others got sick of this little excursion, we dropped by Billie's to see if anyone was there, and they weren't, so it was back to the Bürglhaus to watch some TV and listen to some music with Jesse, Thomas, and a couple other folks. Saw Jackass for the first time and wondered why the fuck anyone would do these things to themselves, let alone watch the damn show. So stupid.
What WAS neat tho was that Escaflowne was on afterwards, and while it was on mute so most people could listen to music instead, it was neat to see it, and was better than I remembered (though I still can't stand the show overall, it was better muted.) The video quality was NASTY though, as if they took the LD's, copied them a couple generations, and then synchro'ed that and put it on TV.
Went to bed at 2, got up at 10, had brunch, came here. Today is for sleeping and being a lazy bum.

Fun in the sun. The burning sun.
2002-07-20 13:26:53
Got up at 10 to 9 and had a nice brunch, well, really just breakfast with some warm cheese and pear toast. Very nice. Then a bit of waiting and a nice long walk to get to where the Boat would take us to St. Wolfgang.
St. Wolfgang is perhaps one of the most overly touristic places I've ever been to. What's funny is that it's had this as a tradition since the middle ages, when pilgrims came to the church, and it's remained that way to date. I did finally try a Mozartkugel, only to find out that it's a glorified peanut butter ball. I can make these at home, no need to pay a small fortune to get them here.
Also had some overpriced ice cream. Should've gotten some cake instead. Ah well.
After we walked around a bit, saw the church, etc. (I've got almost a full roll of film from today), and then took the boat back to Strobl (we took it from somewhere else on the way over.)
Then I made the mistake of going swimming. The minor sunburn I'd gotten in St. Wolfgang became a major sunburn, even tho I borrowed some sunscreen before swimming and it was 25 SPF. So much for that. Guess it's a cold towel on the neck tonight.
Next Saturday is the excursion to Salzburg. The goal is that instead of going to the casino to go see Manitu in the theatre, as I don't have much money here and no desire to lose it gambling. Seeing Manitu is guaranteed entertainment.
Anyhow, time to go get some rest, see what others are up to, etc. Tonight is going to be a pretty slow/dead night.

Strobl, 0040 Saturday Morning
2002-07-19 18:48:40
My journal has broken 3600 hits. woohoo. Thanks to all who read.
Today was fairly standard. Breakfast, Net time, Turning Points (someone PLEASE tell Lynn to shut the fuck up...), Lunch, Sport (details following), Crappy German class (someone PLEASE let me kill the teacher), Dinner, Tutorial...
And then things broke.
But first, learning the theory of windsurfing was a good deal of fun. Helmut's a fun teacher, and I can try it out next week, as I didn't bother changing into a swimsuit before class, and didn't have time after finishing lunch, so I did not get to actually go today, but the wind was also strong enough that he wasn't so hot with beginners pressing their luck anyways.
After tutorial was a quick mail check, as well as a few private mailings going out, followed by planning for the night. There's a bit of a fest/carnival in town for a couple days so a bunch of us went. It turned out to be a carnival ride, some old video games (no DDR, dammit), and a beer tent with air so smoky that it was like a permanent fog, and a typische österreichische band. They wanted 5 Euros at the door to get in, and the rather large group of us would have only gotten ourselves 1 Euro off by being in a group, so we hung out at the Imbiß across the street. Had a Stiegl and some Pommes Frites (Fries to all the Americans), and talked for a while. Almost everyone else has made their way over to Billie's Bar to dance or drink for a while (One of the Americans was forced into numbering his arm for his drinks, at the dare/request of one of the Austrians) and was at 5 when we left the Imbiß.
So now I am here. I'm on IRC for a few minutes, mostly to say hi, do a last email check, and then go to bed so that I'm awake to go to St. Wolfgang in the morning.
Also, the first roll of film is finished. Should I develop it here to see how the pictures came out with the camera or just wait until I get home? Email with answers...

Und jetzt auf Deutsch...
2002-07-19 03:21:35
---
now some English for my limited 9:15AM thought patterns and the non German speakers...
After Tutorial, we had an optional seminar about gender studies in Europe. I stayed for the first half, then finished my Deutsch homework and went to bed a bit early - which is good because I'm feeling pretty awake today, which is nice for once.
The weather has also gotten a bit cooler, to the point where I've debated on more than one occasion grabbing my Jacket on the way out. Hopefully the weather will be nice for windsurfing lessons and St. Wolfgang tomorrow.
Also, can someone tell me why Austrians find it funny if a guy was born as a Virgo?
It's hard to believe that I've been here for a week. Each day feels slightly routine, but so wonderful. It's a very relaxing sensation to be here, I absolutely love it. If George W. Bush continues his insanity like he's planning on, it may be time to just hop over to the local government office and seek asylum. At least this is a nice place to do it.
