JOURNAL: pyro72

  • a japanese anime set to russian music by an american female. 2001-10-08 21:18:22 It's (<--subject line) so twisted. I love it. :)

Anyway, so I've got this Russian song I finally found English lyrics to (since I'm too lazy to translate myself :p ). Unfortunately, I won't be able to start work on it until January. It's a long story, but basically all my source footage is in Houston and I won't be able to get to it until then. In the meantime, I've got another idea I'm toying with, plus the massive amounts of coloring I have to do for my Angel Sanctuary vid.

Ah, it's good to stay busy, isn't it? :) I'm almost done with Tad Williams' trilogy, _Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn_. It's soooo good! I don't think I've ever read a fantasy series before that really captures the sorrow of *winning* like this book does. Yeah, so of course the good guys win - but in this trilogy you really feel the price that victory exacts. Writing like this makes those sleepless nights more than worthwhile. Go read it!

Mmmm, steak for dinner! Time for Pyro to chow down. ;)
  • the last time, i promise! 2001-10-08 00:17:25 OK, just got done uploading yet *another* version of my Escaflowne video. The changes are, once again, very minimal. I just changed one scene and tweaked another.

But this is the final version, I swear! No more uploading. :) Everything's burned on CD and off my hard drive now, so I can't do any more finicking with it.

I have to say, it's kind of weird having it done. I spent most of May just rewatching the series and storyboarding. I've had the clips on my hard drive since mid-June. And it's *finally* done. Wow. I hope the months of work show. :)
  • ...and i feel fine... 2001-10-06 15:09:47 I am currently covered in paint and grinning like a fool.

We painting the house - scrubbing, sanding, painting - the whole shbang. And it's so much fun! Maybe I'm just weird, but I like manual labor like this (only once in a great while though). My favorite chore around the house is - get this - mowing the lawn. Maybe it's cause you can actually *see* results for all your hard work, which is a problem I always had with schools. But yeah. It's not a bad way to spend a Saturday. I'll have to do something outside once we're done, though. This fall weather is too delicious to pass up.
  • lol -- gamingmvs.org ? 2001-10-05 18:37:25 OK, I feel dumb posting two journal entries in a row, but there's really no need for this to go into one of the forums. So anyhow...

I was just poking around in the Video Announcements forum... it seemed to me that currently most people asking for opinions want opinions for Final Fantasy videos. And with the sheer number of gaming videos on this site (yeah, I know - one of those is mine :) ), it's probably only a matter of time til someone copycats this site and makes a gamemusicvideos.org or something of the like. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes something like that to pop up.
  • more on Robert Jordan and whatnot... 2001-10-05 18:25:58 So since a couple people were talking about fantasy authors in their journals, I can't resist jumping in. :)

The first book of Tad Williams' trilogy, _Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn_, was recently rereleased as paperback. I'm almost done with the trilogy (once I was *finally* able to get a hold of the first book, I devoured the series. :) ), and it's gooood. Robert Jordan can eat his heart out. Each of Williams' books runs about 700-800 pages, but in those pages things actually *happen*. It's not 600 pages of a mindnumbing description of Nynaeve's buttons on her dress, followed by a 50-page cool battle, and 200 pages of Rand whining. I agree with iserlohn - Jordan goes into waaay too much detail. And on top of that, almost all of his characters are bitchy and annoying. Oh, and if anyone should die? Don't worry - they'll come back! Usually without an explanation as well. This applies to bad guys, too. Equal opportunity resurrection, I guess.

I can't wait to see the Lord of the Rings movies, but I never did finish the books. :) They're just so *dreary* - after the first book in _The Two Towers_, I couldn't go on any further. I've tried a number of times to finish the trilogy, but I just keep stopping there. Weird....

I used to love Anne McCaffrey, but now... I don't know. It's a lot like Dean Koontz's books these days. All the characters are *too* goody-goody. There's nothing wrong with them. And in the Pern books, now the only bad stuff that happens is circumstance/bad luck. She needs more really strong villains. Koontz's villains are awesome - so delightfully psychotic - yet the climaxes in his recent books don't give the bad guys the deaths they deserve. :)

Oh, and for darker fantasy, check out Neil Gaiman's books. This man is a complete genius. The way he writes - just the way he phrases things - is simply enchanting. That's the only way to describe it. And if you take the subway to work like I do, _Neverwhere_ will give you a completely different view of it. ;)

I'm done rambling now. I'll have to check out those authors other people have mentioned. As much as I love anime and music videos, for me they'll never beat the appeal of an excellent book.
