- Dream log some number or another 2010-05-18 16:58:26 So, in this dream, I was playing an action platformer, and in it was Latvia and Belarus from Hetalia. In it, they were dressed like Ramza and Agrias from FFT. It was pretty strange, I was able to switch between them at anytime, and they had some pretty big shields. They were able to hold them like riot shields, except Belarus's was so big she didn't have to crouch to cover her legs. Latvia, on the other hand, had to, though it didn't really cover his feet. It kinda played like a mix from CC:FFVII and MW2, except there was no lock on target and no firearms or the such the the battlefield wasn't limited to a small circle/stage. During the end of the game, the background music changed, but I realized it was my alarm clock, so I woke up. It was on for about half an hour and I was ten minutes late for work. I guess that's what I get for staying up til three in the morning watching Hetalia :/

A while back, Code once asked, "why do people play games?" Or something along those lines. Well, I have been thinking about it, and I believe I finally have an answer. Actually, I had the answer awhile back, it's just the rebuttal I have been thinking about. I play video games for fun. For the entertainment value. I don't play to escape from reality. I have no where to escape to. I am where I am, there is no changing that.
I first started playing around the NES era. I only started playing because my brother was into video games. All the way up to the N64, I have been playing games just for the competitiveness, whether it be against my brother, my friends or against my own ability. It wasn't until I got a PS2 I started playing RPGs and other single player games. Of course I played games like Mario 64 and Banjo Kazoooie and such, but the majority of my gaming library has been multiplayer-esque games. It wasn't until I got my hands on the Metal Gear series and the Final Fantasy series that I got into RPGs and the sort. When it comes to single player games, I don't care much for the game mechanics and the such. It may make the game more entertaining, but that's not my main concern. My main concern is the story behind it. And in my opinion, the story (though not only in games) is only as good as the antagonist. The villain, the big bad, the final boss. Without them, the protagonist is is left without anything to accomplish. Whether it be Bowser, Psycho Mantis, Sephiroth, Mother Brain, Gruntilda, or even the top of the stage. That is why I love the Metal Gear Series so much, since they have the best villains in history (at least, in my opinion).
I believe how to overcome the antagonist is what makes him/her/it interesting, if not the story behind the antagonist. When it comes to RPGs, though, the story behind the antagonist is pretty much all it has. In my opinion, at least. Though sometimes it's not always the story behind the antagonist that makes the him/her/it interesting, but lack of a story behind the antagonist. Given, if it's the right person, you are left to wonder how the person got to his/her/it's place. Some antagonists are better with a back story, some are better off without one (which is where some games/movies/anime tend to ruin it). That is why I like FFVIII more than FFVII. That is why I believe Ultimecia is much more of a badass than Sephiroth.
Now, wondering how the antagonist got to his/her/it's place may sound like escapism, but it's not something I do while playing a game. While I'm playing the game, my main focus is how to beat it, how to overcome the antagonist. After all, the antagonist is just like my brother or my friends, they're just another person I have to beat. And if I had fun times, just like how I respect my brother and my friends for the good game, I show my respect to the villains. For without them, it wouldn't have been a good game. -

I now have over 5000 (5003 as of now) journal hits. Coincidentally, the world still turns. Every now and then during work, I imagine what to put here, but by the time I come home I forget about it and stopped caring. Nothing new. Just the same routine. Woo. Right now I have about 455 mp4s at about 23.8 gigs, 304 avis at 20.6 gigs, 68 wmvs at 2.3 gigs, 51 mpgs at 2.51 gigs, 9 mkvs at 611 mb, 4 movs at 92.4 mb, 3 divxs at 224 mb, 2 rms at 31.9 mb, 1 flv at 2.79 mb, and 1 file at 79.5 mb. And that's not including my own 4 AMVs :/ Though the list does seem to be lacking mpgs now that look at it...
