  • Sins of a Solar Empire 2008-02-17 21:54:07 Recently, I purchased a real-time strategy game for the PC called Sins of a Solar Empire. I heard some good things about the game on various gaming sites and forums, and I was hungry for a new RTS, so I decided to get it. Interesting thing was that the game was pretty much sold out in almost every store that I called within a reasonable distance from my home. It’s not like it was Starcraft II, so I was a little surprised at its scarcity. Fortunately one store had the game, and it was their last copy too.

Even though I only played the game for about a week, I think it’s safe to say that this is one of the best strategy games I’ve played in recent memory. It’s also one of the most difficult ones too. I guess you can think of this game as a cross between Civilization, and Command & Conquer. You build a galaxy spanning civilization (or many galaxies if you want), develop your economy, and military, but it all takes place in real time, which took some time to get used to considering how big the game can be. I tend to play a fairly defensive style for strategy games; “turtling” my base until I was sure the enemy could not destroy it, and then sending everything I have against them. This simply did not work against the computer AI, and I got beaten pretty badly the first time around. The next time, I decided to expand my empire more quickly; capturing planets and resources faster than my first time. This time I was able to gain the upper hand and defeat the opposing empire.

Graphically, the game engine provides nicely detailed ship modeling, and it was cool to watch dozens of different types of ships battling it out in space. However, it probably won’t compare to the likes of Supreme Commander in terms of graphics. If there was one thing I would have added in to the game, is that I would have liked more background info on the various factions in the game. They do provide some background in the instruction manual, but I wish they could have put more info in. Admittedly, this is really more of a personal preference.

Lastly, I should also note that Sins is one of those games that can eat up a lot of your time without you even knowing/feeling it, so be sure to make some room in your schedule should you decide to play this game.
  • First entry! 2008-02-05 21:52:43 This is my first journal entry, although I’ve been around the Org long enough that I probably should have made an entry a lot sooner. But I guess it’s better late than never. :)

Anyways, there are a few things I’d like to talk about. First, I finally completed one of the best RPGs I’ve played in quite some time…that being The Witcher for the PC. Graphically it looks really good, especially considering it uses the Aurora engine found in Neverwinter Nights (but upgraded beyond recognition). The voice acting was decent overall, with the actor playing Geralt of Rivia (i.e. The Witcher) giving the best performance. The combat system in the game took a little bit of time to get used to, as camera angles sometime got in the way, but fighting enemies (even the same ones repeatedly) rarely got boring, as fighting techniques you acquire and learn over time kept combat interesting. The story was also well written, however because of the way it’s told, the game itself is a little more linear than (for example) Oblivion. Overall, if you enjoy a good role-playing game, you should definitely check this one out.

On the anime side, I’ve finally got around to watching some of the DVD sets I got over the holidays. Currently I’m more than halfway through Samurai 7, and I have to admit, I like this series. Of course, I made sure to watch Seven Samurai beforehand, and I found that watching that movie helped to enhance my enjoyment of the anime. I’ll probably finish the series sometime in the next week, and then I can crack open my Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd Gig set.

Over on the AMV side, I’m still a little surprised that my “A Killer’s Requiem” video made it to the semi-finals for best trailer/commercial. I probably won’t make it to the finals, but in any case, thanks to everybody who voted for my vid! On slightly related note, currently I have an idea for an AMV that I may want to try out, but to be honest I don’t know if it will actually work. It’s something that I have never tried before, and I’m just afraid that it won’t turn out as well as I envision it in my head. But I guess we’ll see how it goes…if I ever start editing it.

Well, I guess that’s all for now. Cheers! :)
