  • 2008-05-19 23:28:01 So today is Victoria Day up here in Canada, which means a day off for most people here. For myself, this was the first long weekend I had in a while, and overall it was fairly enjoyable. I hung out with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while, worked on my next AMV, and I finally got to see Iron Man in the theatres. I have to say that, in my opinion, that is one of the best superhero movies I’ve seen, and I can’t wait for the sequel to come out.

Well, I hope that everyone had a good day today. Until next time!

  • 2008-05-11 23:03:25 Hi everybody! It’s been a while since my last entry, although admittedly not too many things of note occurred between my last entry and this one. ;)

Well, yesterday I saw a movie in IMAX…that movie being Speed Racer. I had some reservations about going to see it. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes were fairly mixed, and from skimming through some of them I could tell that this is one of those “love it or hate it” movies. So coming out of the theatre, I was surprised by the fact that I found Speed Racer to be an enjoyable experience.

First off, I should note that this movie is definitely targeted at a younger audience. It has a lot of cheesy moments in it, particularly the comedy sequences that are meant for children. That being said it still had some of the most visually interesting action sequences, both on and off the race track. Ah yes, the race sequences. The races are (of course) what makes it or breaks it with most movie goers. Some reviews I read said they couldn’t even tell what was going on most of the time in the races. As for me, perhaps it’s because I play a lot of video games, but I didn’t really have that problem. I simply loved watching the gravity-defying races in this movie, and they were made even more impressive by watching them on a gigantic IMAX screen.

The plot itself is fairly thin (i.e. trying to take down an evil corporation), but the acting was, on the whole, pretty good, if a little over the top at points. In particular, Emile Hirsch did a great job portraying Speed Racer, and Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox performed admirably as Trixie and Racer X.

The fact is, I can understand where some of the criticisms for Speed Racer come from, but I still couldn’t help but like this movie. Bottom line is, if you see this movie, come to the theatre, sit back, and just let it take you on its visual roller coaster ride. Oh, and definitely check it out on IMAX if you can.

Now, on another topic, today marks exactly two years since I’ve joined AnimeMusicVideos.org. I’ve really enjoyed being a member of this site, and being a part of this community, and hopefully I will still be around here for many more years. Oh, and I was also hoping to have another video ready by this time but...well...that will come eventually. :)

That’s it for now. Until next time!
  • 2008-04-03 22:24:52 Hey everybody! Not too much going on in my neck of the woods, but there are still a few things to talk about…namely three of my favourite things in the world: video games, anime, and AMVs.

A little over week ago I purchased Jade Empire: Special Edition for the PC. The game itself is kind of old (coming out over a year ago for the PC, and even longer on the X-Box). The graphics were okay, but looked a little dated, especially compared to games like The Witcher. The game itself was also relatively short compared to other RPGs I’ve played, clocking in a just less than 20 hours. However, that was an awesome 20 hours! The fighting system gave the player many different styles to choose from, and winning fights (particularly against bosses) can depend greatly on how you manage your techniques. This gave battles far more depth then your typical hack-and-slash fights. The voice-acting was surprisingly well done, which helped the player to better connect with the characters you encounter in the game world. Lastly, the storyline, while appearing fairly simplistic at first, became extremely engrossing when considering the fact that the choices you make can have an impact on it. I was hooked from the start, and I played the game heavily until I finished it. RPG fans should definitely give this game a look.

On the anime side, in my last journal entry I mentioned that I went an ordered a series called Aquarion. The DVD set I bought contained the first 13 episodes of a 26 episode series. So what did I think about it? Well, my reaction to this series so far is very…mixed. I’ll be blunt: the first episode of this series did not impress me at all. In fact, it almost made me regret buying the set. My main gripe with the show as a whole is that it’s really hard to like any of the characters in the show, and many attempts at personal conflict between the characters feel very forced. On the plus side the animation, particularly of the mecha, is quite good, and the action scenes are enjoyable as well. After the first episode, the series does get better, although slowly. I will admit, however, that the last two episodes in the set (episodes 12 and 13) are both well done, and they give me hope that the show can live up to its potential in the next 13 episodes.

Lastly, on the AMV front, congrats to my fellow Walküre studio members for winning our IC match against Amvience. This was the first time I ever participated in an IC match, and I had a really fun time doing it. However, this battle between our studio will likely carry over to other Austrailian cons in the coming months (or years), and hopefully by then I will have a video ready.

That’s it for now! Cheers! :)
  • Aquarion 2008-03-02 23:15:27 So I was looking around IGN the other day, when I stumbled upon an article for an anime series that I never heard of before called Aquarion. Being a huge fan of the mecha genre, the screenshots from the series instantly piqued my interest. The next I did was I went to Funimation’s website, and saw the trailer for the series…which intrigued me even further. There’s just something about cool looking, computer animated mecha blowing stuff up that really appeals to me. :) So after all this, I think I’ve made up my mind to pick up the DVD’s, which should be released next week. Can’t wait to check this series out!
