  • Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? 2009-08-28 18:24:02 This is actually the first time (as far as I know) that this has happened to me. A couple of days ago someone on YouTube told me that they saw a video that had footage from my A Killer’s Requiem AMV stuck in it.

    Here's my video: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=152795

And here's the other video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFhuHYc3SDM

Basically, this person made a “new” video wrapped around my old video. As of now one commenter has posted on that YouTube video page that it was a ripoff, although this person denies the accusation. Admittedly, this ticked me off a little, but at the same time I was a little flattered that someone thought my video was good enough to blatantly rip off. I probably should say something to this person, but I think I’ll just leave it alone for now.
  • 2009-08-12 17:13:10 Street Fighter IV (PS3 game review):
For me, Street Fighter IV is nothing short of digital crack. I’ve never been the biggest fighting game fan, but in one fell swoop this game has made me fall in love with this genre. It is without a doubt one of the best fighting games I have ever played.

So, let’s start off with the basics of this game. Street Fighter IV features a roster of 25 characters (although some of them need to be unlocked), each with their own distinct fighting styles and strategies for playing. If you remember playing Street Fighter II (and its various iterations), then the core gameplay of SFIV will feel familiar, but there are a few additions made that help to improve upon the formula, such as “Ultra combos”, which are devastating attacks that each character can use once their revenge metre fills (after being hit several times by your opponent). But the biggest gameplay addition is the focus attack which allows you to absorb an opponent’s attack, and (depending on how long you hold the medium punch and kick button) launch a counter attack that can cause your opponent to fall right to the ground.

The most noticeable change in Street Fighter IV is a completely new graphics engine. All the characters and backgrounds are gorgeously rendered in very detailed and colourful 3D (although the game still played entirely on a 2D plane). Each character also has a story that is told through anime cutscenes, although I will admit, these cutscenes aren’t the greatest. The background music for each of the game’s many levels fits the atmosphere of each stage, although you won’t really notice it when you and your opponent are beating each other up. Oh, and before I forget, the opening intro theme music has to be one of the cheesiest yet addictive songs I’ve heard for a game.

Now, what makes this game truly fun for me is the online multiplayer. Fighting an AI opponent is nowhere near as fun as beating the crap out of another person over the internet. When fighting a live opponent (particularly is SF4), it’s not just about knowing the abilities of your own character, but basically guessing how your opponent is going to fight, and having to adapt to them. There are no massive 100+ hit combos to destroy your opponent in one stroke like in many other fighters, and powerful super and ultra combo attacks could easily miss or be blocked by a prepared enemy. In particular, missing an ultra combo can leave you wide open to attack. You really have to play (for lack of a better term) “mind games” with your opponent, and wait for an opening, or for them to make a mistake. It’s this unusually high level of strategic thinking that really sets Street Fighter IV apart from most other fighting games, and keeps me coming back for more.

Street Fighter IV has truly re-ignited my interest in the fighting game genre (on a side note, I’m seriously considering picking BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger). I can safely say that I’ve improved a lot from when I started playing this game, but compared to some of the people I fight online, I’m below average at best. But that’s okay, because even if I lose I still can learn, and I still have a fun time playing. If you’re a serious fan of fighting games, Street Fighter IV is essential to your collection.

I give Street Fighter IV 5/5 stars.

    On a related topic:
One of the more “interesting” facets of playing SF4 online is encountering people who take this game way too seriously. As stated above, I’m not very good, but I have won my share of matches. Once in a while when I do win, I get a message from the player I just beat essentially complaining that I beat them. Honestly, have you people never lost at anything in your life before? It’s just a game folks.

  • Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (PS3 game review) 2009-08-10 18:06:31 I was looking through various websites trying to find more games to play for my new PS3, and I stumbled across Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Uncharted is one of those games that many people who own a PS3 says to try out, and well...I did.

Uncharted goes out of its way to feel like a fun, treasure hunting B-movie. As Nathan Drake, the story takes you on a quest to find the mythical treasure of El Dorado, complete with a female companion and a wise-cracking sidekick. As some reviews have said, the gameplay of Uncharted is a mix-up of both Tomb Raider, and third-person shooters like Gears of War. You’ll be jumping up and around obstacles, solving various puzzles, and shooting up enemies. The shooter mechanics in particular are well-executed. Running into a fire fight is a sure way to get you killed, and so proper use of cover is incredibly important. But even then, your enemies will try to flank you, and flush you out with grenades, which help to make for an intense experience.

The design of the levels looks very good, with a nice variety of vistas including jungles, creepy ruins, and even a World War II German U-Boat. However, the levels themselves are very linear, with only one real way to go from point A to point B. You’ll never get lost, but considering the subject matter of this game, a greater ability to explore your surroundings would have been nice.

The voice acting in Uncharted is very well done, and I think it’s a great example of how great voice actors can help to enhance the overall experience of the game. These actors actually make you care about the characters in the game, and what they’re going through. In particular, Nathan Drake’s voice actor (Nolan North) really captures the free-spiritedness of the character.

The only real drawback of the game however is that it’s single-player and it’s not very long. Truth be told, once the game is completed there’s no real reason to go back. Yes, there are trophies and unlockables for you to collect, but personally I don’t really care much for that stuff.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is a game with fantastic production values that make you feel like you’re really in a summer blockbuster movie. However, its linearity, and the lack of any multiplayer hampers the game’s replay value. Still, I had a fun time playing this game, and I’m looking forward to trying out Uncharted 2.

    I give Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune 4/5 stars.
  • Infamous (PS3 game review) 2009-08-10 00:17:42 Originally, I was actually deciding whether to get Infamous for my PS3, or Prototype for the PC, since they look to be similar games. After reading several reviews, and also finding the game on sale for $29.99 at my local Best Buy, I decided to go with Infamous, and it’s a decision I definitely do not regret.

I guess the best way I can describe Infamous is that it’s a cross between Grand Theft Auto 4 and Assassin’s Creed. You can’t drive any vehicles, and have to traverse the city either on foot, or by going rooftop to rooftop (like Assassin’s Creed), but there are a large number of side missions, as well as a lot of stuff to blow up (like Grand Theft Auto 4). However, unlike these games, Cole (the character you play as) has some pretty gnarly electrical powers. You can throw bolts of electricity, use energy grenades, and glide through the air. My personal favourite ability is the thunder drop. Climbing to the top of a really tall building, jumping off, and slamming to the ground with enough force to explode cars and throw back enemies and civilians alike is just plain fun.

One of the features that is touted for Infamous is its “morality” system. Throughout the game, you’ll come upon opportunities (from either side mission or the main story) to perform acts that are considered good or evil. Performing a good or evil deed will affect how the citizens in the city will react to you, as well as what kinds of powers you can acquire later in the game. Admittedly, I have to agree with some comments that say that most of the “moral” choices you have are too obviously good or evil, with absolutely no grey area. However (major plot spoiler ahead), towards the end of the game you have the choice to save either your girlfriend, or a bunch of doctors, and you could only do one. Save the doctors, you did a good deed, save your girlfriend, and you performed an evil deed. Now, I will admit that the choice to save just your girlfriend may be selfish, but whether it’s an “evil” choice is debatable.

Now, one thing I really liked about this game is its presentation. The graphics in this game are great. The game takes place after a major explosion has rocked the city you’re in, and the design of the city (complete with demolished buildings and wrecked cars) reflects this very well. The look of your electrical powers, and the mayhem they can cause (yay for tons of explosions) is really cool to watch. I also thought the presentation of the story through comic book cutscenes was a neat touch, and on the whole, the voice acting in Infamous is nicely done. However, the game could have used more variety in the types side missions available, since playing the same ones too many times can get a bit tedious.

The bottom line is that Infamous is a great game to play. It’s not perfect, but I really admire the ambition that the developers have. If you own a Playstation 3, then this title is one you should definitely consider trying out.

    I give Infamous 4/5 stars.
