Where do the anime people get the things?

Have you ever been watching an anime and they just pull something out? I mean it's just plain weird. Have any of you seen Fushigi Yugi. I n 4th episode(I think) Tamahome pulled out a white flag. Where did it come from? If anyone can answer this please do
