    think i must have the patience of a saint after this.

    Optus has my mobile, home and
    internet services running through them (bundling is kewl).

    /me dials my ISP helpline
    <automated voice message> please input the phone number that the internet
    service is connected to though you key pad
    /me inputs home phone number
    <automated voice message> we are currently experiencing a large number of
    calls and it may take 20 mins to answer to call please ensure that you
    computer is turned on and your OS is currently operational
    /me thinks... not sure how it would be on without the OS but meh
    18 minutes later
    <indian chick> welcome to optus how can i help you?
    <me> I can't connect to the internet, I've turned my computer off and then
    on and reset my modem and turned the power on and off 4 times already and
    it still won't work, I've also tried using a different USB port and still
    no sucess.
    <indian chick> ok mam I'll need you to reset your modem
    <me> ... I just told you i already have
    <indian chick> ok mam can you do one thing for me and tell me the phone
    number your service is connected to
    <me> I just put that into your system previously but it's 02 XXXXXXXX(not telling yew guys)
    <indian chick> ok mam can you restart your computer
    <me> I have already 4 times
    <indian chick> mam can you do 1 thing for me and disconnect the power to
    your modem and resart your computer
    <me> ... riiiight... shutting down for the 5th time
    <indian chick> ok would it be ok if i call you back in 2 minutes once your
    system reboots, i need to consult some other people about this problem
    <me> ok *hangs up*
    2 minutes later the phone rings
    <indian chick> hello this is XXX from optus can i speak with Danielle

    <indian chick> can i have the phone number your internet service is
    connected to
    <me> is this a joke? you just rang me on it and i've given it to you twice
    already? *gives number*
    <indian chick> ok mam i need you to tell me if your modem is turned on
    <me> mmhmm
    <indian chick> are there any lights on it
    <me> yesss 3 of them
    <indian chick> ok mam can you do this one thing for me and tell me which
    lights they are?
    <me> the first one, the last one and the middle one.
    <indian chick> which lights are they

    <indian chick> mam can you please look at your modem and tell me which
    lights they are
    <me> *punctuates each word*the first light, the last light and the
    middle light.

    <me>grrr how about i read the manual and tell you which operation they
    correspond to ?

    <me> ok neither the USB nor ethernet light are working
    <indian chick> do you have the USB cable connected
    <me> YES
    <indian chick> is it connected to the computer?
    <me>... YES as i said before
    <indian chick> ok mam please look at your computer and tell me how many USB
    ports you have
    <me> 13 including the hub
    <indian chick> i'm sorry mam you can only have 1 or 2 ports on your
    computer
    <me> no i can and do have many more
    <indian chick> ok mam please change the USB plug from the modem to a
    different port

    <indian chick> ok mam is the USB light on on your modem?

    <indian chick> ok i need you to insert your optus cd into your cd drive
    <me> ok it's in my dvd rom
    <indian chick> i'm sorry mam you need to put it in your cd drive
    <me> i don't have a cd drive i have a dvd drive that reads cd.
    <indian chick> ok double click on the my computer icon and then you will
    see an optus icon double click that
    <me> there isn't one my computer miss behaves sometimes and doesn't show
    the icon's of what's in the drive but it has read it, would you like me to
    right click and explore the cd and install the drivers again?
    <indian chick> no mam you need to resart you computer
    <me> why?
    <indian chick> please restart computer
    Computer restarts
    <indian chick> now mam i need you to double click on the my computer icon
    and then you will see an optus icon
    <me> *tone is becoming very clipped by this stage* there isn't one! but i'm
    exploring the cd
    <indian chick> how have you opened the cd
    <me> never mind it's open do you want me to reinstall the drivers?
    <indian chick> i need you to double click the setup.exe file
    <me> there are 6 .exe files none of them say setup, but would you like me
    to run the optus.exe?
    <indian chick> no mam you must double click the setup.exe
    <me> THERE ISN'T ONE! * runs the optus.exe anyway*
    <indian chick> we need to install drivers
    <me> ... i asked you this already, ...i've started the installation... oh
    look there already are drivers and the program froze
    Reboots computer
    <indian chick> ok mam we can try one last thing, turn your modem off and
    remove the usb connection
    <me> yep done
    <indian chick> now you need the yellow cable that came with your internet
    package and connect it to the ethernet port on the back of your modem and
    connect it to your computer
    <me> I don't have a yellow one.. my ethernet cable is blue, but i'll
    connect that
    <indian chick> no mam! you must connect the yellow cable, the blue one is
    USB
    <me> No both my ethernet and usb cables are blue
    <indian chick> no mam your ethernet cable is yellow, it came with your
    internet package, you can only use that cable
    <me> i didn't get a f#cking yellow cable i got a blue one and the f#cking
    colour doesn't matter it's the same bloody cable
    /me connects cable
    <me> oh wow look the internet is connecting now, that was a complete waste
    of my f#cking time.
    /me hangs up phone
