  • MODs 2001-10-08 04:43:31 I just love mods. They bring back good old memories during the early 90's.

The first mod music that I ever heard Team 17's Project-X PC version back when I first bought a SoundBlaster 16-bit compatible soundcard. Most games that I had had MIDI songs which sounded weird and ugly using my soundcard. But Project-X was different, the music was in techno, instruments & samples sounded very authentic and its quality was almost as good as CD-audio. But the game's very small and fitted in two 1.44" disks and so I thought "the music couldn't be in WAV format". Then I spent hours searching for the music sources in the game directory and found a few files: pxloader.mod & pxintro.mod To make sure that they're the music files I just swapped the two filenames. Yep, they're the music files, allright!

Later, I managed to find a DOS mod player & Impulse Tracker and listen to game mods including Pinball Illusions/Dreams/Fantasies, Turrican II, Crusader - No Remorse/Regret, One Must Fall 2097, Terminal Velocity etc. They're really good and some could even beat 2-Unlimited.

I have been following MOD since then, and nowadays, some of the popular PC games including Unreal Tournament still uses mods for their bgm, written by some of the well known composers such as Necros, Purple Motion, Alexander Brandon... r0x0r! No wonder I spent more time playing UT than Quake3

  • I'm bored 2001-10-03 10:15:56 (edited from private entry)

Still a few days left before I can go back to visit my family. I didn't have anything to do since yesterday and I was not in the mood to edit my videos. So I spent some time at the forum and made an offer to give my opinions to anyone who have less than 4 reviews received (I chose 4 because I received 4 ops myself.) At first I thought there would be many people to come and ask for my help, since everytime I visit "Video Announcement" section many people post their request for opinions. But I found there were only four at the moment. Hmm... perhaps there aren't so many people who regularly visit the board, or maybe they already have more than 4 reviews.

Since the day I posted the thread, I only managed to download videos from three members and wrote four ops in the same day. Never thought I could do it that quick. Usually it took me at least three days to get some ideas on what to write and not just "Great vid, good job, hope to see more" and correct my English mistakes. Anyway, I wrote quite a lot in their reviews compared to last time and after that my average usefullness went up from 89 to 104 (average 120). After seeing that I got an idea how to increase my scores without much thinking. I could just put this in the good points, bad points & general comments textfields:

    ".........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    ..........................................................................
    .........................................................................."
    (copy+paste a few times)

but I'm afraid people might dislike me.
  • AMV contest 2001-10-02 02:02:58 The last few days before updating this journal, I got some new ideas for my next video, and have started sketching some key visuals on timeline, and then I'll submit some of them to a few online contests. I failed to enter some of my earlier videos to AWA and ZeroGravity because I was a little late to notice their datelines, but luckily there's still Mindwarp. I have just submitted one video which is TFX under non-Anime, Upbeat and Action categories. It's not really my favourite video but I got a few positive comments from other creators, so I thought this one have a potential to compete. The other one that I'm doing will be submitted under Instrumental and probably drama. I'll be more focus & putting a lot of effort on this one. Cant give any detail about the process because it's still on the early stage.

Anyways this is my first attempt to enter such a contest. Although I'm not sure my videos would win, seeing that the other competitors are also very talented (I've seen one of the competitor's video) and some very well established, I hope to win at least one genre as this would be truly a groundbreaking record for a amvc newbie like me.
  • First entry, new idea. 2001-09-20 07:15:35 Well, this is my 1st EVA entry. umm... uwa.. what to talk... erm.. ok.

A new idea just came to me today.

I will plan for another musical video to follow TFX, but this time I think I'll make a fantasy one like Disney's "Fantasia" with storylines, straight from an Anime. Speaking of the Anime, I'm not sure yet but I've thought about Escaflowne movie since I plan to buy a limited ed. DVD for $8 sometime this week. As for the music, I have some descent MOD music downloaded from www.traxinspace.com.

    Thats all for now.
