JOURNAL: Amizadai (Lee Amizadai )

  • Welcome, strange and wriggly beings. Help yourself to the punch. 2002-03-17 20:05:41 I went jogging this morning. I almost died. 5 minutes of jogging had me wheezing and gasping and begging for mercy. Then I almost fainted. I started getting really sleepy and my vision started to go black. So I stopped and bent over to get some blood back into my brain. And that's when I started to cramp. Yaay.

    I have weird dorm-mates.

Here's a weird conversation I had with my next door neighbour today:
Ami - Hey, do I look really young to you?
    Jimmy - You like like a cartoon. And I can't tell a cartoon's age.

    Weird.

My other next door neighbour plays Sims obsessively. She has a Sim she designed after me. I got to name it. I am honoured and yet strangely disturbed.

Poolfan is evil. EVIL. He watched the 2nd part of the new Kenshin OVA and posted spoilers in his journal. Aaaargh! I can't resist spoilers even though I know they're supposed to make your fingernails go black, your hair fall out, and your willy drop off. (Not that I have one, but that's not the point.)

There were spoiler warnings, but I ignored them... I went ahead and now... *sob* now I can't stand it. I... must.. download movie... *twitch twitch*

But not many people on Kazaa have it yet, so I'm stuck with downloading the file from this one lone guy whose kbit rate fluctuates between 1.8 and 4 kbits a min. I have 60 hours to go before I get the entire file. And it's a divx, which means I can't view the partially downloaded file. Oh joy. But well, at least it's a high quality file... it's 403 MBs! Woohoo! 3 GB bandwidth limit be danged!

Oh, by the way, has anybody got the problem of having Kazaa crashing explorer and IE whenever you try to type anything? It sucks, because it means I can't work AND leave Kazaa running.

Ever wanted to know what a McDonald worker goes through everyday? here's a simulator. http://conceptlab.com/simulator/

  • a little pain would be nice 2002-03-17 05:24:56 I'm overblogged. You know how it is: you come across a fantastic online journal, decide to check out his/her friends' journals, and before you know it, you've created a bookmarks folder called BLOGS TO CHECK OUT EVERYDAY containing about 50 links.

Some of these writers are so freaking talented. They write and muse and express so well. Their wit and candor astounds me. I am amazed. I am impressed. I am jealous.

By the way, I'm bleeding. I have this awful habit of peeling my left thumb. It's really gross. I do it when I'm stressed or bored. Worst thing is, I am usually unconscious of what I am doing until I look down and see my thumb more than a little RAW and shreds of skin sprinkled over my lap. It usually just bleeds a little, but once at church camp, I worried at my thumb until I yanked off a tiny bit of flesh. It was really small bit, believe me. At first it was just a spot of red, but after I closed my other hand over it, the pressure must have made something happen. When I next opened my hand, my palm was all bloody, and gore was starting to trickle down my wrist. You should have seen me, sitting in the service staring in morbid fascination at my bloody hands. I should have gotten up and declared stigmata. But then the pastor would probably have wrestled me to the ground and done some demon-casting. So I got up to wash my hands, but not before I flashed my gory palms at my boyfriend. Bwahaha!

Here's an interesting article... a game company that is proposing advertising on grave headstones:
    http://media.guardian.co.uk/advertising/story/0,7492,667949,00.html

Hands up all those who share the suspicion that it's not for real, but just a publicity stunt. Still, can you imagine an ad for Nike or Britney Speares' newest album on your gravestone?
  • Nobody tosses a dwarf! ~ Gimli 2002-03-16 06:06:05 Law of Inverse Ethics in Baddy vs Protagonist Fights

Boo factor for villain is directly proportional to sympathy for underdog hero in the case where it's one good guy fighting against a gang of baddies. Esteem for lone hero's bravery and courage in the face of incredible odds increases proportionally to outrage at villain's dishonour.

However, underdog factor cannot be invoked for the baddy if he is in the same situation ie: 1 baddy vs group of protagonists. And boo factor is not applied for heroes because they are not "ganging up" unfairly. They are uniting in comradely brotherhood to eradicate source of evil.

  • Moisture... is the essence... of water.... - Zoolander 2002-03-15 21:12:55 Hey TobinHood: I agree with you... Zoolander is so freaking FUNNY. I almost gave myself a stroke laughing throughout the film.

Lucky I watched it in Australia because I woundn't have been able to watch it in Singapore.

ONE day before the press preview, the film was pulled because of political sensitivities. In the movie, the Prime Minister of Malaysia is almost assasinated by a brainwashed male model. The assasination is planned by the top dogs of the fashion industry, who are peeved that the PM has decided to close down the sweatshops that churn out fashion products.

Malaysia got pissed because of the unsavory depiction of Malaysia as a country that allows sweat shops. I don't know if they were also unhappy over the fact that a Chinese actor had been cast as the leader. A Chinese prime minister in Malaysia? Hm... that's not quite... right.

Anyway, Singapore's government decided it wouldn't be wise to piss them off further by screening the movie in Singapore.

Of course, this resulted in a huge hoo-ha about the issues of freedom of speech, censorship and all that ballyhoo. Plus, Singaporeans are avid movie goers (highest frequency in the WORLD) and they were not happy about missing Ben Stiller's newest movie. Newspaper forums got tons of letters from people passionately deploring the repression of an open media, and condemning the Singapore government for cowardice in so easily giving in to pressure from Malaysia.

    ....

It's a movie, for goodness sake. ENTERTAINMENT. Stuff you watch for fun.

I mean, I'd rather not watch a film (no matter how fantastic) if it's going to compromise the relationship with our neighbouring country. The country that happens to supply Singapore's water, periodically points their cannons in our direction, is barely a kilometre away and could probably gather the Muslim forces gathered around us in every direction to lambast us to Kingdom come if they felt like it.

Plus, they have really good food, and they sell pirated DVDs really cheap.

It just doesn't pay to get them pissed.

Everybody's been so jumpy since Sept 11. Why aggravate the situation by insisting on watching Zoolander? It's *entertainment*, for crying out loud.

Sheesh, Singaporeans can be so dense.

  • I'm a puppet cutting strings ~ Kenna 2002-03-14 14:10:28 Hey Bowler, thanks for the tip. Right. Blind Contouring. I'll try that out in a bit.

Wow. I don't know how I did it, but I actually managed to get my course readings for yesterday done in time. I even got a fairly coherent reading log typed out during my 1 hour break.

Whew. To think I was planning to skip the Documentary Studies screening yesterday just so I could do the readings and the log. If I had, I wouldn't have caught Triumph of The Will, a Nazi propaganda film. It was so amazing, production wise. The images were so powerful.

Gah, late for class. Better run now. Will write more about this later.
