I refuse to believe that because I don't defrag regularly my HDs are being used up at alarming rates! During the most active time of my amving career (ie I filled/ emptied my file sectors VERY quickly ie 30 amv/ amv segments a year for a couple years, some MULTIANIME) I was using an IBM DEATHSTAR (Deskstar, but everybody called it DEATHSTAR cuz they were notorious for dying) drive! A REFURBISHED ONE!! Not only that, but I have NEVER had a drive die on me! And I don't use externals. I didn't work until years out of HS (went to college 1/4-1/2 time if at all), I live off of SSI, anyway I access my HD's 18+ hours a day (give or take an infrequent holiday) AND I HAD A DEATHSTAR FOR TWO YEARS!! No, I turned off that XP (don't have Vista) service that toys with your HD as well using XPLite.
I'm just saying, HDs do die, but ppl with HDs that die must be doing something wrong.
though perhaps it's just that it's just externals that are just very sensitive like that due to being turned on/ off a lot and being a bit more exposed to dust (and not as easily cleanable) as internals.
If your internal HD dies then... wow. lol :P No some may access their hard drive more than me :| hard to believe, but true. But it is my opinion it is this 'service' by XP and defragmenting in general that kills HDs. You should defragment semi-regularly, but not frequently :| it's all a ploy by the software industry to keep you on the upgrade curve. Beleive me there's lots of ploys like this out there. /slight paranoia... but at least I aint wastin 500 bucks 2x a year!! lololol

Did I mention I am NOT an Idol?? lol

whatever *removes shoe from mouth* glad Pwolf took the time to clear that up
not sure if he's 100% correct on #3 though and basically I'm just overstating the problems with defragmenting HDs, BUT he does have a point, either you defrag or it will seek... causing harm either way ~~ ah well, my tip, just don't go crazy on your defragmentation process... especially if it's a hard core or low level setting.
Grazi to Pwolf for the info though -_- Obviously I enjoy the attention :D

"Even I had moments of petty spitefulness, ignorant biases, even outright nastiness. They didn't."
Proof positive folks lol Idols do NOT make asses of themselves xD
ok I'm feeling helpful right now! Don't defrag your HD a whole lot!! ESPECIALLY on high settings! It'll ruin your HD. In fact all these ppl with ruined HDs, it's probly cuz they Defragged a ton more than they needed too!! Seriously I redo my system every couple of months and fragmentation is CAUSED by making files and deleting them THAN making other files that are not the exact same size, BASICALLY JUST what amv editors do! So if your an active AMV editor your HD is likely to get fragmented quickly (depending on how quick you fill it) BUT. DO. NOT. DEFRAG IT!! I hadn't defragged my HD in months (and again, though I don't make nearly as many AMVs as I used to, I still fill/ empty my HD every few months) you won't die with a fragmented HD, you don't lose space, only speed.
Tip #2 if you don't already use your HDs so that your programs are on your main HD and your clips on your gazonga external HDs. DO SO! Figure it out cuz doing it this way may cause your HD to fragment BIG TIME, but like I said, fragmentation DOES NOT make you lose space only speed! And if your actual program (and scratch disk/ cache/ page file) is on a separate hard drive (RAMDISK!! Ignore this remark if your not technically inclined....) then there will be no speed hit at all, the only hit will be when you are placing and deleting the clip and that will be minimal. Anyway do it, and DON'T defragment but maybe once a year. Defrag the main drive if you like, but don't go overboard.
Tip #3 The new, expensive solid state HDs do NOT defragment well... at all really. Just don't buy them at the current time. they might be doable as a programs ONLY drive, as long as you off load the page file/ scratch disk onto another drive. But you'll need a specialty scanner for it... and if you have XP or Vista you'll need a patch cuz XP and Vista defragments a little in the background for you anyways... and again, defragmenting is NOT good for Solid State HDs. I think the new Windows 7 has a fix built in.
You won't get your hands on a solid state HD for a couple years... unless your willing to pay 50 bucks per gig of space again *_*. But if you did and used it right my goodness, you could turn on your computer and have it ready for you in MILLISECONDS!! No seriously (though degradation is rather instant... it's never that slow)
And lastly Happy BDAY MITCH!! TONIGHT WE DINE ON LOLIS!!... 2D LOLIS.
