Sarcasm: is the rhetorical device of using a characterization of something or someone in order to express contempt.
In other words to understand Sarcasm (inherently related to criticism which is why you find so much of it here) one must understand that in English (and maybe some other languages I don't speak... but I'm told foreigners mainly have trouble with this as it does not translate) you can set a degree to every word. IE I hate lemonade. BUT I hate lemons even more!! If someone were not careful they might simply say 'I hate Lemonade' when they actually mean 'I don't hate Lemonade, I hate Lemons, but Lemonade is allright'.
So you see, I don't HATE those videos. I hate Lemons. Those videos are allright, I just don't particularly like them sometimes.
Also do NOT try to understand the definition as Wikipedia explains it. Because all it explains is IRONY and that does NOT cover the entire definition of sarcasm. Sarcasm is DEEP. It's Irony but so much more, but like Irony it's basically leaving out the degree of your words. I like to do it with noobs... and vets... and ppl I don't like- and-ppl-i-do-like! Yeah, when I say jump I expect ppl to say how high? I don't tell them how high
... cuz I want them to contemplate jumping off that cliff >.< muhahaha ~.~ no j/p... but basically.
It's like me implying, well how high CAN you jump for me? cuz if you ASK me how high? I'm going to tell you something you DON'T want to HEAR. In other words, with the hate thing. I'm saying HOW MUCH do you THINK I hate that thing? Cuz if you ASK me I'll tell you something you don't wanna hear so... yeah I really hate pretty amvs... though I stand around here for YEARS surrounded by them and BANNERS. How much do you THINK I HATE those pretty amvs?
