Upgrade came today, and after I got back from the convention planning meeting (which lasted about 1.75 hours longer than usual, crunch time starts now!) I started on the upgrade.
a few hours of work, and some battered hands later:
basic components are in, and I didn't fry anything (as far as I can tell)
unfortunately, my raid array won't survive.
That means one thing: reformat, reinstall
right now, I'm doing backup and getting program installers
and my old computer is sitting on a box on the floor (which is how I'm able to type this now)
if only I would have taken one more picture of the open-air temp setup...but oh well
pics coming sometime later

Bah, back at school. Long train ride becomes much longer when you're tired but can't sleep on the train.
Yep, that's what I get for staying on a night schedule for the past month. Switching between day and night sucks.
Finally back to my nice desktop (which will be getting a nice upgrade very soon), forgot how big my monitor here was...it's big
lack of sleep doesn't seem to help with making a coherent string of thoughts, so I'll end your pain here -
