JOURNAL: Kariudo (Derek )

  • 2007-06-13 22:35:59 haven't been sleeping too well the past few days @_@
Monday: about 4 hours total before I got up for my 8 hour work shift
Tuesday: about 4 hours. couldn't sleep during the night, so I just stayed up
Wednesday: about 4 hours, after the previous 2 days, I still didn't get tired until 3am. Woke up at 8am to wait for ups to deliver my package (it got delivered at 3pm)

after I got the package I began setting up my work area. Newspaper on the floor, compressed air, screwdrivers, new heatsink, new thermal compund, optical cleaning cloth, isopropyl alcohol and 2 zip-lock baggies. It was a bit of a struggle trying to get the old heatsink off (my desktop computer)

the alcohol+ optical cloth works really well for cleaning up the old thermal compund (at least when working with metal surfaces...my hands got pretty messy in the process. good 'ol soap took care of that one). pre-treated the new heatsink and slapped it all together again. The new heatsink went on with far less struggle than the original one did. (and it also fit without any problem, which was a minor concern of mine)

after I got my desktop up and running again I started working on my laptop. much more time consuming...but I got everything off and put back together again. The thermal frame was still fairly dusty (good thing I had that compressed air). So I applied this new compund to my laptop and put it back together. At first glance, my idle temps seem to have dropped by about 5C...still running a bit hot though.

*I pulled out the cpu on my laptop...it really is a desktop athlon 64 3200+ (s939).

that concludes this episode of "Casually ripping apart expensive electronic equipment"
  • 2007-06-11 00:10:01 more fun work stuff.
I usually can't see me complaining about my schedule, but this borders on insane.
I'm only scheduled to work 2 days this week. I got called in to work tonight by my friend (who is a manager along with me).

The staff we have right now is unreliable, 2 people skipped out on their shifts tonight. The cook that was called in to work for one of the no-shows has almost no sense of urgency...takes his sweet time no matter how busy it gets.

from the sound of it (and from the little work I've done with the rest of the staff) this is a problem with almost everyone (the lack of urgency and speed)

getting back to my point, the reason I was given by my friend as to why I'm scheduled so little is because the general manager doesn't want to rely on me too much because I'm only here for 3 months. I can understand that suddenly covering the shifts that I was working isn't the easiest nor most pleaseant thing to do, but with the situation that we're in I think that it would be a better idea to use my repeatedly proven skills while they can. (as a side note, the average person stays at our store for somewhere between 3 and 6 months)

Lots of drama going on at work, it's taken it's toll on the general manager. The GM is notorious for lack of training for new staff (which is a big part of our problem right now).
I'm trying to step up, there are things that need to get done. The first thing I'm trying to take care of is training for our new product that will be sold starting tomorrow. Usually training is done a week or two in advance, nobody has been trained for this yet. I'll have to do some more thinking about how to "re-train" most of the staff without killing our budget (and without coming off as a jerk).

    fun stuff, good experience.

last thought for now (it's supposed to be cryptic):
the one number I have gotten 2 or 3 times is the one that I will probably never call.
the irony of it all makes it funny to look back upon
almost feels like something ripped straight out of a story

    preview button! good stuff

last night I ordered a new heatsink/fan for my desktop. I also decided to get some good thermal paste (Arctic Silver Ceramique) which is supposed to be non-conductive.
so when it gets delivered I'll be not only putting the new heatsink on, but also srtipping my laptop down to the electronic version of its underwear (well...it's kinda more like a hospital gown, but you get the idea)

this time, the monitor and keyboard have to be removed as well (usually those stay on)
My goal is to aplly this new thermal compound that I'm getting in hopes of dropping my temps (which are hovering around 52C at the moment). I also got some compressed air to get as much dust out as possible.

got some more work done on my segment today, I had quite the time trying to decide what to sync to, still need to do something for the first 16 seconds or so. After a little more sweat, I can work in AE...with a little luck I'll be able to get the ideas in my head to actually work for once.

no matter how much I do, I still have to wait for some input on the tracks before and after mine (particularly the one after mine, since I have this grand vision of how it will end. I need to know if it'l work or not). I'm looking at you~ WC

  • 2007-06-06 23:15:46 boss gave me a bit of a scare this morning. When money goes missing, heads start to roll.
Turned out that he pulled one of his usual stunts without telling anyone else...

we have spaghetti at work...lots of it.
We just started some daily specials this week, one of which is "all you can eat pasta and salad"
so yesterday (when this particular special was run) the day cook had to make lots of noodles, lots and lots of noodles (we're talking a few gallons of noodles)
...nobody took the offer, so now we have lots of noodles and nothing to do with them.
So for the next few days the employees will be "encouraged" to make their meals spaghetti instead of pizza.

I actually liked it, piled on the sauce, put some crushed red pepper on top, and put green olives in as well. topped off with cheese. It's good stuff.

good banners coming lefet and right right now. Last night I approved 9/10, tonight 6/10.
usually it's more along 1/10 - 3/10 that get approved by me.
Saw some code Geass banners, good stuff...VOTE FOR IT!

finished nhk ni youkoso, the series is wierd...main character walks into pretty much every major pitfall of society...while still having some romance in it. At the end of the second to last episode, I was looking forward to the ending. They blew it once, recovered and could've ran with the second push, failed again and recovered once more. The ending is kinda meh imo, I was hoping for something darker or much more uplifting.

no working on amvs tonight, it's an early start in the morning (for me). Up at 8am, at work by 9. Fun stuff...
