JOURNAL: Kariudo (Derek )

  • 2007-08-11 01:50:51 called my friend over to do some file transfers, ended up trying to show him how my linux "live" cd is not so much alive as it is on life support (kept giving me disk error 80)

so I pop in the disk, wait for it to start to boot (and fail...again) but something different happened. It worked
no idea why it started working...but I wasn't complaining (among the things on the disk I want is the gcc compiler and some fancy development tools)

so after playing around a little bit (and doing some reading on the basic filesystem) I decide to try to install it on my external.
takes me about 50 tries to get it to the installer successfully, but I finally got it to install.

I reboot, grub starts up...and gives me error #22
basically means that it's looking at the wrong place to boot
so I'm trying to re-install to fix this boot problem, might just have to bite the bullet and install it on one of my internals (though having it on external would be nice)
  • 2007-08-07 23:48:20 reading sub0's journal made me think of the other computer stuff I did recently
-rerouted psu cables so they didn't take up all my 5.25" drive bays...this also made my nb chipset fan run about 4k rpm slower (it was at 10k after I put in my 1950pro, it was around 6k when I had the 6600 in...so everything's back to normal)
-disconnected my front panel power (the aspire x-cruiser has fancy gauges in front)
I was trying to disconnect the two [noisy] fans I stuck in front of my HD's. Eventually pulled the right connector (I should get a 120mm exhaust fan, the 80mm I have in there doesn't seem to work)

my computer is now running quieter, HD's are running at 50C though
managed to get it up to 2.5Ghz running a 1:12 divider at 1.45v core and 2-3-2-5 @ 2.8v (DDR at about 210)
but I realized that the max rated voltage reported by everest was 1.4v core...so I dropped it back down to 2.4GHz

got in touch with the guy who's going to hook me up with a job shadow on Thursday (maybe I'll end up getting an internship for next summer)
get to be down there at 9am Thurs (which is reasonable...but I'm back to going to bed at around 2 or 3am. At least I gave a morning routine a shot)

I have to give my roommate another call sometime (seeing as how I never got a call or email)
...I'm not a real big phone user. I don't really have people to call, nor people to call me
  • 2007-08-05 16:33:06 no amv motivation lately :/ I've been playing computer games for the past week or so.
So I started playing roller coaster tycoon again, and Dungeon Seige (a game that came with my video card, kinda like wow....kinda)

My friend that I've known since 5th grade (so for about 9.5 years) brought his xbox360 over yesterday and we spent 8 hours playing Project Slypheed.
advanced controls are always the most fun...after you get used to them that is.
at the end of our session I was still ramming into ships when I wanted to fire, straying in front of some hueg liek xbox cannons, ramming our fleet's ships and shooting our own fighters (but in my defense they would always fly right in the middle of my line of fire in the middle of my "omg it's teh enemy! Firin mah lazors" rampages)

finally got a 2GB flash drive to replace the 256MB one I was using. There's nothing wrong with that 256MB one other than the fact that it's only 256MB.
That space fills up pretty fast, and on several occasions I thought that my drive was at least 512MB...but then came to the realization that it was only 256MB.
$20 for 2GB. It's got that U3 stuff on it but it hasn't given me any problems yet.
I can imagine it would come in handy since it has avast on it (don't know if I have to pay for a subscription though)

also in the way of not-amving was overclocking my desktop.
I was running it at 2.2GHz (stock is 2.0), and after some "instruction" from WC got it to go up to 2.4GHz. There isn't really any noticeable temperature difference except for the load temps. I managed to push it to 2.5GHz with a cpu/15 memory divider and 4x HT mult, but when I tried to push it to 2.6 with a cpu/15 and 3x HT mult it wouldn't boot.

last thought: how come my editing keeps slowing down? a 30 second segment shouldn't take hours upon hours. Hopefully if I keep pushing through stuff I'll be able to speed up again
  • 2007-07-24 22:14:29 Finished Deathly Hallows in 3 days.
It would've been 2 but I had to work yesterday :/
it gets my seal of approval. Managed to keep me reading for hours on end (somewhere between 5 and 6 hours)...I just couldn't put it down. I didn't like one of the chapters, but one out of 30+ isn't much
    Ending was superb imo

wonder how they're going to make the movie since it would take a good 4 or 5 hours to cover all the greatness in that book

Finally got around to ordering my birthday presents. I'm paying for the majority of it...but what the heck. I did good last semester at school and had to put up with a lot at my job.
    parts list:

(when I get the video card I should be able to play FEAR with max FSAA, AF, volumetric lighting and soft shadows)

got some more editing done, and now my segment has completely changed (the parts that I've gotten to at least).
Perhaps I was trying to make too much happen
  • 2007-07-19 02:42:39 more drama at work, thinking of quitting.

Just finished watching Maburaho, it was pretty good imo. It would've made a great 13-ep series, but 24 wasn't unreasonable.
Lots of fanservice, a bit of repetition...but overall it was enjoyable.
Hearing so much about Kazuki's genes made me want to do a "my humps" parody using audio from the series (to make it "my genes")

up next is please twins...and then I'll probably need to watch some action anime after that (or just play FEAR a lot more)

happy birthday to me. I can feel it, deep down inside of me I know that today will be...
    ...
    ...
...just like any other day :/

well, now for the results of my sleep schedule reset.
Utter failure. I still can't get to bed before 3 or 4 am...but now I can't stay in bed past 10am.

went over to a friend's house to rip apart his laptop. Not too surprising, but his model was a lot different from mine (and a lot harder to take apart).
Toshiba satellite a75 s2292. Lots of issues with that model (so I hear)
in about 2 hours we managed to take it apart (only breaking 1 power connector, the one to the left speaker. This speaker had been not working and shocking people who touched it)
Used goo gone to clean up the old thermal grease, put some of my ceramique on it.
everything went back together without too much trouble (with the exception of one panel) and still works as far as I know

last thought: now that it looks like I'll have plenty of time I wonder if I'll get working on my amvs again
